What’s the best time to go to Yucatan?
November to March is the ideal time to visit the Yucatan, featuring mild temperatures and lower humidity. Due to its tropical climate, high temperatures are expected year-round, but the winter and spring months offer more pleasant weather than summer and fall.
Be aware that the rainy season from June to October can bring heavy storms and hurricanes, thus planning your trip outside this period is advisable.
Visa Requirements for Mexico
Travelers from the United States, Canada, and many European nations do not require a travel visa to enter Mexico. Upon arrival, you will receive a 180-day FMM tourist card, which needs to be exhibited throughout your stay. Keep this document safe, as it must be returned when departing Mexico.
Traveling to the Yucatan Peninsula

Public Transportation in Yucatan

Yucatan Road Trip Itinerary: Days 1 and 2
Upon reaching Cancun, take your rental car and set off on your adventure. While Cancun offers beautiful beaches and vibrant resorts, it is recommended to explore deeper into the Yucatan for a more enriching experience.
Drive approximately two hours northwest to Chiquila, a quaint village from which you can catch a ferry to Holbox Island.

Holbox (pronounced “hole-bosh”) is a serene island with stunning beaches and no crowds. Originally a fishing village, it has transformed over the years while retaining its bohemian charm.
From mid-May to mid-September, you can join tours to swim with whale sharks, the largest fish in the ocean, known to frequent the warm waters off Holbox. Advance booking with local operators is recommended.
The Yum Balam nature reserve is best explored via boat tours that traverse the area’s breathtaking scenery, including Yalahau Cenote for swimming and birdwatching.
Yucatan Itinerary: Days 3 and 4
After your adventures on Holbox, return to Chiquila, collect your rental car, and make the drive to Valladolid, a recognized “pueblo mágico,” or magical town located in Yucatan state.

Chichen Itza & Cenote Ik-Kil
Visiting Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is a must. Located about 45 minutes from Valladolid, ensure you arrive early to explore this expansive archaeological site.
Nearby, the beautiful Cenote Ik-Kil provides a refreshing swim after a day of exploration. Alternatively, discover the less crowded Cenote Zaci back in town.
Day 4: Ek-Balam Ruins and Cenote Xcanche
Ek-Balam offers a chance to climb Mayan Ruins that other sites no longer permit. Pack your swim gear for Cenote Xcanche nearby, where you’re welcome to enjoy a dip post-exploration.
