While photographing these windows, Goncalves sometimes faces security concerns. In larger cities, people often disregard his presence, but in smaller towns, residents frequently question his motives, reflecting their apprehensions about privacy and safety.

Sometimes Goncalves’s work provokes security concerns. ‘In the big cities, no one approaches me, but when I’m photographing the small towns they are asking me why – I think they are afraid because of burglars.’

‘I try to give each city or region its singularity and identity, and so, it gives us a glimpse into their history and culture.’ Goncalves writes. ‘It’s a big evolution from the earliest holes in the wall.’

Expanding Horizons

To date, most of the windows in Goncalves’s collection are from Portugal and Italy. However, he has aspirations to expand his photography endeavors, with plans to document windows in cities such as Bucharest, Barcelona, and London. Furthermore, he expresses a desire to explore window designs in Russia and Tibet, showcasing his love for diverse architectural styles.

‘I would love to go to Russia,’ he adds. ‘I saw some photographs of the windows there and they’re very beautiful. I’d also like to go to Tibet in China.’
