Experience Wilpena Pound from Above in the Flinders Ranges

There is no better way to take in the beauty of Wilpena Pound than with a scenic flight from Flinder’s Ranges.

The Flinders Ranges Mountains of South Australia receive very little rain. However, during our 429 km drive from Adelaide two days earlier, it poured rain all the way there.

At the park’s office, we heard how much they needed the rain, highlighting the drought conditions and expressing gratitude for the wet weather.

While I am pleased for the rain’s positive impact on the ecosystem, I wished it could have waited until after our departure. Fortunately, it did!

The rain cleared the following morning, allowing us to explore the remarkable amphitheater of Wilpena Pound, an astounding 80 Square kilometer circle of rock.

What is the best way to see this spectacular landscape? From above, of course!

We absolutely love taking scenic flights. It is an unparalleled way to appreciate the beauty and scale of a destination from the air.

We arrived at the Wilpena Pound Airport at dawn, witnessing a lone plane taking off while no one else was around.

Having our own Ute hire, we waited in the warmth of the vehicle for the pilot and our fellow travelers to arrive.

As we waited, we wondered if we were indeed in the right place.

Taking off over Wilpena Pound

The airstrip is rather remote, unpaved, and lacks a hanger or office.

A small shed and two planes sit in a fenced gravel area.

After waiting for some time, two individuals from Germany and another from Sydney finally joined us, which eased our concerns about being in the correct location.

The pilot arrived shortly afterward, removed the window covers, conducted a quick check of the aircraft, and soon we all loaded in after being weighed and assigned seats.

Dave and I were fortunate to be seated together at the back, allowing for great photographs of each other grinning during the flight.

The plane only accommodated six passengers, and the two back seats were indeed snug.

Initially, I felt a bit claustrophobic as Dave’s shoulder pressed against mine, limiting my space. However, all anxiety disappeared as soon as we took off.

The flight over Wilpena Pound was remarkably smooth, making it one of the best scenic flights we’ve experienced.

The day was ideal, with a clear sky and zero turbulence. This allowed us ample opportunity to absorb the stunning views beneath us.

The scenery was absolutely breathtaking!

About Wilpena Pound

Astounding Wilpena Pound

Wilpena Pound is undoubtedly one of the most incredible landscapes we have ever encountered.

However, we received conflicting explanations regarding its formation, and even after researching online, clarity was elusive.

Did a meteor create this landscape, or is it a syncline, a result of tectonic movements? It appears that the rock was folded, resulting in the erosion of the valley.

Yet, the formation at the top of the page seems too perfect for mere geological processes. Thus, I lean towards the meteor theory—call me crazy!
