Summary
Before arriving in the Highlands, I had heard considerable praise about the North Coast 500 route, and undertaking the NC500 drive (at least in part) was something for which I was adequately prepared. However, the Wester Ross Coastal Trail was an entirely new revelation to me.
I frequently emphasize the lesser-known aspects of the Highlands, yet it is important to note that often the only differentiating factor between an extraordinary site one may know well and another location that is similarly stunning but lesser-known is simply marketing. There are innumerable locations here that many have likely never encountered, yet they are just as beautiful (and sometimes even more so) than the ones with which one may be familiar.
Wester Ross exemplifies this phenomenon.
We commenced our journey in Sheildaig, a charming village that, I must admit, we had not explored thoroughly, perhaps apart from dinner the night prior.
Sheildaig is one of those exceptionally picturesque villages in the Highlands that one must visit.
The surrounding mountains and stunning bay create a remarkable sight—particularly as the sun rises over this tranquil locale.
We continued driving towards Applecross, pausing occasionally to absorb the breathtaking scenery from varied vantage points…
…meeting a few of the fluffy locals along the way.
Views like this are what one might expect to find in Norway (or possibly even New Zealand). Such landscapes evoke images of fjords and are sights for which we would travel great distances. It’s amusing how these beauty spots are practically right on our doorstep here.
A sight that is sure to catch your attention here is the Hairy Coos (the Highland Cows)!
We continued driving towards Applecross, periodically stopping to admire the captivating views from varied locations…
We encountered many seals, offering a delightful sight.
Following a busy day, we anticipated a relaxing evening at the Plockton Inn.
We subsequently proceeded with dinner where I savored the exquisite local langoustines in garlic butter, while my companion opted for haggis, which he relished thoroughly.
Main courses included a flavorful lamb and a locally-sourced burger. Scotland is renowned for its high-quality beef, providing a superb dining experience.
Our dessert was a delightful sticky toffee pudding, establishing it firmly as a top contender among my preferred desserts.
After a full day packed with moments of visual splendor and culinary delights, rest came easily. I was thoroughly enamored with the Scottish Highlands prior to this visit, and remarkably, my admiration has only intensified. I eagerly anticipate discovering more of what the Highlands have to offer!
