Summary
The Cotswolds
The Cotswolds is a quintessentially English region recognized for its remarkable natural beauty, situated just a short distance from the vibrant cityscape of London (exactly 120 minutes away).
Despite its proximity to the capital, the allure, scenic landscapes, and charming villages of the Cotswolds provide a refreshing escape to an area seemingly untouched by time.
Getting to the Cotswolds
Departing from London Paddington, we opted for a direct train to Evesham followed by a taxi to our accommodation, primarily due to my fatigue after indulging in two packets of sweets on the train.
Although the Cotswolds may appear rural, it boasts excellent transport links by both road and rail, making it easily accessible for day trips from cities such as London, Bristol, and Bath.
For a seamless travel experience, it’s advisable to secure train tickets in advance (this approach can also yield significant savings). After all, no one enjoys the last-minute scramble for a seat!
Stay in a Stately Home: The Wood Norton
We had heard remarkable things about The Wood Norton Hotel leading up to our visit, including its rich history as a former residence of a French royal and the remarkable Victorian shower still present within the hotel!
Historically, in the last century, The Wood Norton was the home of Prince Philippe, the last Pretender to the French Throne, which certainly added an air of royalty to our stay.
Located in the scenic English countryside, The Wood Norton Hotel captivated us from the moment we arrived.
Exploring the Cotswolds
Experiencing the Cotswolds in style is best achieved by avoiding taxis and public transportation and instead renting a classic British car for the weekend. A Morgan Plus 4 specifically, is the ideal choice.
Upon gaining confidence with the handling of the vehicle, we embarked on an adventure to discover many of the quaint villages within the Cotswolds.
This exquisite British car is truly a work of art, appealing even to those who may not be particularly enthusiastic about vehicles. A personal touch, such as naming it “Bertie,” adds to its charm.
Dining at The Wood Norton
After a full day of exploring the enchanting Cotswolds, we returned to The Wood Norton in time for cocktails by the fire before dinner. The hotel offers a charming bar atmosphere, with well-regarded espresso martinis as a favorite choice.
We indulged in a delightful five-course meal, beginning with a smoky amuse-bouche, followed by delectable dishes including pâté and a refreshing pear sorbet palate cleanser.
After relishing our main courses, including perfectly cooked beef fillet and roasted rabbit, we ended our culinary journey with a classic crème brûlée, which ranks among the finest I’ve tasted outside of France.
Our time spent at The Wood Norton Hotel and our exploration of the charming villages in the Cotswolds were truly unforgettable experiences. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to return and embrace this delightful adventure once again!
