Safari Adventures in Africa
Going on a safari in Africa is one of the most thrilling adventures in the world. There is nothing more exciting than seeing African animals roaming free on the great plains. We have been on safari in South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Namibia, and Botswana. We are truly fortunate to experience such adventures.
African Safari Animals in Photos
Our first time in Africa was in 2008 when we cycled from Cairo to Cape Town. Our journey took us from the north through Sub-Saharan Africa to the southern tip of the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. We encountered abundant wildlife on that six-month trip alone and have returned four times since. Here are our favorite moments of coming face-to-face with Africa’s magnificent animals.
Notable Encounters with Wildlife
Male Lion
It wasn’t until going on three safaris that we saw a proper pride of lions. While touring Tanzania with Go Ahead Tours, we had our most outstanding lion encounters, particularly during a game drive in the Serengeti.
Lion Chasing Lioness
We witnessed three male lions attempting to court a female while a herd of elephants continuously chased them away. It was remarkable how the lions maintained their focus on the female while keeping a wary eye on the elephants.
Lioness And Her Cubs
In a memorable encounter, we saw 13 cubs following a lone female lion. Our guide mentioned that there were likely three other adult females nearby, but these cubs were devotedly following their Alpha female. One curious cub even broke away to play with his mother, displaying the adorable family dynamics of these magnificent creatures.

Lions can be found all over Africa: Notable locations include the Serengeti in Tanzania, Kenya’s Masai Mara, various game reserves in South Africa, and the Ngorongoro Crater. Lake Manyara is famous for lions resting in trees, while we also spotted them in the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park in Botswana.
Lion And Elephant Fighting For Space
While lions are often regarded as the kings of Africa, they face fierce competition from elephants. We observed a lion and his brothers loitering too close to a herd of elephants and their calves, which led to a group of male elephants chasing the lions off.
Amboseli National Park is one of the best places to see elephants in Africa, offering stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and a large concentration of these gentle giants, along with sightings throughout the Serengeti, South Africa, Addo Elephant Nature Park, and more.
Leopard in Tree
Leopards are among the most elusive animals in Africa. After waiting for days, we finally spotted a leopard lounging in a tree during our last day in the Masai Mara. While other safari trucks crowded around, she hid. However, once the crowd dispersed, she finally made an appearance, creating a breathtaking moment.
Leopard Jumping Into A Tree
Experiencing a leopard in action is rare. One evening during our return to the lodge, we asked our guide if we could check the leopard tree. To our delight, we caught her mid-leap onto another tree, capturing an amazing photograph.
Three Rhinoceros – The Whole Family
Seeing a rhinoceros in Africa is indeed a rare treat, as many species are critically endangered. The Northern White Rhino became extinct in 2019 and the Western Black Rhino disappeared over a decade ago. It’s crucial to leave rhinos alone and protect them, rather than believing in myths regarding their tusks.
Cheetah And Her Cub
One of our favorite encounters was observing a cheetah hunting with her cub as we exited Tarangire National Park in Tanzania. Although they made a thrilling run for a gazelle, the eager cub jumped the gun, alerting their prey and spooking it away.
Keeping Watch Before The Next Hunt
Despite the missed opportunity, the mother cheetah quickly reassured her cub, who remained eager to learn. Such patient teaching is key for survival in the wild.
Cheetah In The Grass
Spotting cheetahs can be tricky; however, we finally had our first sighting in the Masai Mara. As we observed this beautiful creature, we were reminded of their incredible camouflage.
Baby African Elephants Playing
Seeing baby elephants is heart-melting. Witnessing their playful nature within their protective family unit filled us with joy amidst the realization of their critical endangerment.
African Elephant On The Way To The Watering Hole
It’s incredible how quickly elephants travel. Observing a procession of elephants, zebras, and impalas heading to a watering hole in Tarangire National Park was a quintessential African safari moment.
The Lone Bull Elephant
Male elephants often become solitary as they age. While observing one of these bulls, he abruptly charged our safari jeep, demonstrating how unpredictable elephants can be in the wild.
Giraffes On Lake Manyara
Lake Manyara offers fascinating encounters with wildlife. Witnessing giraffes silhouetted against the beautiful waters was mesmerizing. Sadly, they are becoming critically endangered.
Necking Giraffes
Observe giraffes as they engage gracefully in ‘necking.’ Their synchronized movements resemble a captivating ballet that leaves onlookers entranced.
Black Rhino
Lake Nakuru National Park is home to one of the largest populations of black rhinos in Africa. This sanctuary is under strict protection against poaching. Visitors can expect to see both black and white rhinos here.
Yawning Hippos
Though hippopotamuses may seem docile, they are among Africa’s most dangerous animals, responsible for more human deaths than lions or elephants. Observing their massive mouths when they yawn provides a thrill!
Warthog
Warthogs are charmingly odd-looking creatures. Always scurrying about, they are notoriously difficult to photograph due to their constant movement. I often find myself rooting for their survival!
Flamingoes
Flamingoes thrive in African salt lakes, most notably at Lake Manyara and Lake Nakuru. These vibrant birds are a spectacular sight along with other bird species that inhabit these lakes.
Morning Light On A Hyena
While hyenas may not be the most glamorous of African animals, encountering one is fairly rare and can be surprising. Their scavenging nature doesn’t diminish their fierce spirit.
African Crocodile
The Nile crocodile is Africa’s largest reptile and poses a significant threat to humans. While kayaking in South Africa, we became acutely aware of this danger!
Cape Buffalo (African Buffalo)
As one of the Big 5 African animals, the African buffalo holds an iconic status. Unfortunately, many species across Africa are critically endangered today due to hunting.

Plains Zebras
Plains zebras are frequently spotted across Tanzania, Kenya, Botswana, and South Africa. Experiencing horseback rides among wild zebras is a thrilling highlight of safari adventures.
Hartebeest
Hartebeests, with their elongated features, can often be seen alongside zebras and gazelles. Their numbers, however, are declining due to increasing human impact.
Impala
Impalas are graceful and speedy antelopes capable of reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h (37 mph). Only male impalas possess horns.
Wildebeest
The iconic wildebeest migration is famous in Tanzania and Kenya. While we have yet to witness this incredible phenomenon, we have encountered many wildebeests in nature.
Springbok
Springboks are another member of Africa’s vast antelope family.
A Chillin’ Baboon
Perched upon a termite mound, a baboon surveyed its surroundings, showcasing a demeanor of confidence. After nearby elephants left the area, the baboon wasted no time claiming its spot back.
Sikes Monkey
Named after Colonel William Henry Sykes, the Sikes monkey is recognizable for its white throat. We were fortunate to spot this unique species in Kenya.
Vervet Monkey
Vervet monkeys, known for their adorable appearance, are often found near lakes and in forested areas. We notably encountered them at Lake Nakuru and in Tanzania.
Colourful Birds Of Africa
Our initial lack of interest in birdwatching transformed during our safaris, as we learned to appreciate the diverse avian life, including vibrant species like the Lilac Breasted Roller.
Penguins of South Africa
Southern Africa is home to adorable penguins found just south of Cape Town. Observing these charming creatures adds another layer of excitement to a safari adventure.
Stork
Seeing storks in Africa was thrilling! Their presence in Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa made me realize they’re very much real, contrary to the childhood myth.
Heron
More Birds
Initially indifferent, our excitement for the bird species in Africa grew as we witnessed various types thanks to the enthusiasm of a fellow safari-goer.
A Late Evening Yawn
As the sun set, a lion prepared to rest, reminding us of the rhythm of wildlife. This tranquil experience occurred during our safari in South Africa.

One close encounter with a lion showcased his readiness for lunch as he approached our truck, reminding us of the thrilling yet unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters.
