Summary
Iceland is an extraordinary nation, adorned with charming small towns, breathtaking hiking trails, and an abundance of delightful sights to behold. Truly, the plethora of remarkable experiences available in Iceland may warrant an extended stay to appreciate them all.
For many travelers, however, the time spent exploring Iceland can be limited. Thus, it becomes essential to meticulously plan how, where, and when to experience each of the most significant locations.
Iceland is considerably vast, and navigating through its terrain can take an extensive amount of time, particularly if one encounters snowy conditions (as was our experience during a rather intense storm).
Consequently, I aim to share some of the most awe-inspiring experiences available in Iceland. After all, it would be regrettable to journey all that way and overlook key attractions.
With this in mind, it creates the ideal opportunity to plan a return trip!
1.) Glacier Walking and Ice Caves
There are numerous glacier walking and ice cave excursions that are a delight to experience while visiting Iceland. Not solely are these adventures breathtaking, but they also offer a uniquely thrilling exploration opportunity—safely, of course.
Numerous locations exist for exploration, particularly at the Kötlujökull Glacier, where one can discover the Katla ice cave.
Alternately, one might also explore some of the ice caves located in Langjokull and Vatnajokull.
It is advisable to book this ice cave tour. After all, it is highly recommended to enter the caves only in the company of an expert, as this environment can be unpredictable, and caution should always be exercised.
2.) Hiking in Iceland
Iceland presents an incredibly dramatic setting for exploration, particularly for nature enthusiasts! The landscape is remarkably distinct and can dramatically shift based on the specific region you are visiting.
This variation introduces a multitude of world-class hiking opportunities in Iceland that are scattered throughout the country.
For example, the Mount Esja Trail and the trails at the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve are stunning destinations that should not be overlooked. However, it’s crucial to hike with a knowledgeable guide and avoid taking unnecessary risks.
3.) Go Horse Riding
Icelandic horses are celebrated for their excellent temperament and strength. They are renowned internationally for their amiable nature and friendliness.
Should you have a fondness for horses, I recommend embarking on a guided ride through the tundra and trails. It’s a truly extraordinary experience unique to Iceland.
However, it is wise to have a backup plan in place. Our horse riding adventure was almost postponed due to a storm.
4.) Experience the Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon in Iceland is stunning and undoubtedly one of the essential experiences when visiting.
Moreover, it is conveniently located approximately 20 minutes from Keflavik airport and in close proximity to the capital city, Reykjavik.
You can either opt to visit the Blue Lagoon for a day’s access or choose to stay there. During our visits, we selected to stay at The Retreat at Blue Lagoon, and it was an incredible experience.
Admittedly, the cost is significantly higher than nearby hotels; however, the experience is remarkable and genuinely unforgettable.
Furthermore, guests who stay at the resort enjoy access to more private geothermal pools that can be utilized at any time. Even during the nighttime, the experience of soaking while observing the sky above was absolutely magical.
The experience was phenomenal.
5.) Whale Watching in Iceland
Some of the best experiences in Iceland are not confined to the land; whale watching serves as an excellent example.
Along the Icelandic coastline, there exists a substantial expanse of water where whales can be spotted. In fact, Iceland ranks as one of the premier locations for whale watching globally.
Many tours depart directly from the harbor in Reykjavik, thereby making it relatively easy to participate in a last-minute excursion. Moreover, the boats tend to be spacious, offering ample room for all participants.
A brief word of caution: avoid scheduling your tour for your final day in Iceland. We made this mistake and nearly missed our flight home due to delays in returning to the shore. Always provide yourself with a time buffer.
There are few places around the globe that offer better whale watching experiences than Iceland!
6.) Try Cooking Underground
This concept may seem peculiar; however, it was an unexpected delight during my visit to Iceland.
Utilizing geothermal vents that emit immense heat, certain hotels and establishments prepare dishes by burying them underground.
During our stay at the Frost and Fire Hotel, we were able to experience the cooking of eggs underground. Meanwhile, at the Geothermal pools of Fontana, fresh bread was baked as we enjoyed a dip.
This experience was remarkable and one of the most unique activities to enjoy while traveling throughout Iceland.
7.) See The Northern Lights
The Northern Lights represent one of the most remarkable and breathtaking experiences to enjoy in Iceland. It is an event that must be witnessed to be fully appreciated.
We have observed the Northern Lights multiple times in Iceland, and each occasion is distinctly special.
Travelers can choose to join an organized tour for Northern Lights viewing; however, if you have access to a vehicle, I highly recommend venturing out independently.
This way, you can stop wherever is darkest and remain there as long or as briefly as desired. Thus, you maintain complete control over your experience, which is often the best way to witness them.
Alternatively, numerous accommodations can set up notifications for when the Northern Lights become visible, so be sure to inquire during check-in.
8.) Visit the Waterfalls of Iceland
Iceland boasts an astounding array of dramatic waterfalls! In fact, you will likely find yourself spoiled for choice.
In particular, iconic locations like Gullfoss and Skógafoss are both powerful and picturesque sights to behold. They are easily accessible for visitors and do not necessitate strenuous hikes to reach.
Additionally, don’t forget to visit Seljalandsfoss, one of the few waterfalls where visitors can walk behind and enjoy a full 360-degree view of the cascading water.
9.) Explore the Volcanic Beaches
Iceland is renowned for its stunning coastline, particularly in areas significantly shaped by volcanic activity.
While on a road trip around the island, be sure to stop at iconic locations such as Reynisfjara’s black sand beach.
Also, don’t miss viewing the stacks along this coastline, which are said to be trolls turned to stone following a night of merriment.
Moreover, the area is located near Vik, one of the towns in Iceland that provides an excellent base for exploring this section of the island.
10.) Explore Reykjavik
The capital of Iceland, Reykjavik, is an essential destination when visiting the nation. While it may be relatively small, the capital’s walkability makes it easy to navigate on foot.
While in the city, be sure to visit some of the finest Icelandic dining establishments, observe the iconic church that stands tall over the city, and stop by Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur for one of their cherished hot dogs, which have been served for nearly a century.
