Discover the Magic of the Outer Banks

There must be magic in the air down on the Outer Banks. How else can you explain a place where wild horses frolic on the beach and humans can learn to fly? That’s what I realized on my first visit there as a lifelong resident of landlocked states. My wife’s family would make annual pilgrimages, and after they offered me an introduction, I finally “got it.”

The natural barrier islands protect nearly 200 miles of mainland North Carolina coasts from Atlantic storms, despite their delicate land formations being mere hundreds of feet wide in some stretches. Home to numerous national wildlife refuges, protected seashores, and state parks, the combination of beauty and power attracts countless visitors.

According to local tourism bureaus, between four and five million people will make the trek to the Outer Banks (OBX) this year, nearly double the figures from 15 years ago. Consequently, it pays to plan ahead. Despite the influx of tourists, the coastal towns and scenic views maintain their breezy charm. Here are my top tips for making the most of your trip.

Step 1: Choose Your Base

Location is crucial in OBX, as each town offers a distinct feel. Traveling between them can pose challenges, with traffic on Hwy 12 sometimes dampening the vibes. Beachside parking is also smaller in number compared to mainland beaches, so consider how easily you want to access the beach. Below are some highlights, listed from north to south:

Corolla

Vibes: An upscale yet unpretentious mix of posh rental properties, shopping, and natural beauty. It’s one of the northernmost areas in OBX, easily reachable without a beach-safe 4WD vehicle.

Do: Sightseeing wild mustangs at the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge is a must. For those equipped with 4WD, the Corolla Wild Horse Fund provides resources for a safe experience. Other attractions include the Currituck Beach Lighthouse and local shops.

Eat: Treat yourself to a crabcake benedict breakfast at Seanna Tavern, followed by evening drinks at the Corolla Beer Garden.

Stay: Various vacation home rentals are available. For larger groups, consider local rental companies for more staff support, like Twiddy & Company.

Duck

Vibes: Family-friendly and quaint, Duck features a charming boardwalk lined with shops and seafood restaurants. Frequent events foster a community atmosphere.

Do: Rent a bike and ride along the path or pick up a kite from local shops to fly on the beach. Visit Duck Town Park for a leisurely experience.

Eat: Indulge in a pretty donut from Duck Donuts or enjoy delicious seafood at The Blue Point and Paper Canoe.

Stay: For lodging, Village Realty offers a local office in town, along with a variety of hotels stretching between Duck and Corolla.

Kitty Hawk/Kill Devil Hills/Nags Head

Vibes: These neighboring communities offer a range of activities and accessible amenities. They are busier than other OBX areas but have plenty to offer.

Do: Kitty Hawk is notable as the site of the Wright Brothers’ historic flights at the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Visit Jockey’s Ridge State Park for the tallest living sand dunes on the Eastern Seaboard.

Eat: Try John’s Drive In for burgers and sweet treats or Sam and Omie’s for comfort food from the sea.

Stay: The area features more motels and hotel chains, catering to those who prefer not to rent an entire home. Colington Creek Inn offers a peaceful oasis in Kill Devil Hills.

Roanoke Island

Vibes: Manteo on Roanoke Island is ideal for history buffs and museum lovers. Its rich offerings will captivate those interested in the area’s past.

Do: Explore the mysterious disappearance of the “Lost Colony” at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, or stroll through the Elizabethan Gardens.

Eat: Enjoy oyster dishes at Blue Water Grill or reserve a steak dinner at the Tranquil House Inn’s 1587 Restaurant.

Stay: Cozy inns and traditional bed and breakfasts dot the landscape, providing a charming, relaxing experience.

Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands

Vibes: Located at the southern end of OBX, Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands offer a more serene alternative to the busier northern regions.

Do: Taking the scenic ride along Hwy 12 is part of the adventure here. Once you arrive, enjoy uncrowded beaches or explore trails in Buxton Woods.

Eat: Howard’s Pub in Ocracoke offers burgers in a quirky setting, while Cafe Pamlico serves delicious Thai curry ramen.

Stay: Seek rentals through specialized offices, like Ocracoke Island Realty or Hatteras Realty.

Step 2: Find Accommodations

Home rentals have been our go-to for large trips. However, researching options can be overwhelming due to high demand and early booking schedules. Consider securing your accommodation as early as possible, as many popular rentals are booked well in advance.

If renting isn’t an option, splurge on a charming inn to make your evenings more enjoyable. Given the calmer nightlife, relaxation is key.

Step 3: Plan Your Days

Beaches are the main draw to the Outer Banks, with ample options for renting beach gear, from umbrellas to paddleboards. Reservations are essential to ensure availability. If you must find something last minute, compare various rental agencies to maximize your chances.

If you seek something adventurous, consider kitesurfing or glider lessons for an additional thrill. However, keep an eye on wind conditions to guarantee a pleasant experience.

Step 4: Plan Your Menu

OBX offers numerous dining options, especially for seafood lovers. Many restaurants require advanced reservations during peak seasons, so plan accordingly.

Step 5: Decide Your Route

Norfolk International Airport is the closest major airport, about a 90-minute drive to the Outer Banks. Traffic can be heavy during peak season, so aim to arrive midweek to avoid congestion.
