Locals recommend arriving early—Ocean Drive, for instance, can be gridlocked by noon, but is pleasant around 8 a.m. You can also save on accommodations by staying outside of Providence; numerous smaller inns and bed-and-breakfasts throughout the state offer lovely settings at a fraction of the cost of metropolitan hotels. Rhode Islanders are known for their friendliness, and some accents closely resemble those from Boston.
