If you’re looking for a quieter experience that is as beautiful, fun, and vibrant as her more famous sister, Pittsburgh is the way to go. There’s no other city quite like it in structure — driving in through the mountains feels like you’ve passed into another world, greener and more beautiful than the one you left behind. The city sits where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers come together to form the Ohio River, crisscrossed by some of the most beautiful bridges in America.

Beyond the refreshing city design and unique geography, Pittsburgh is home to a plethora of true gems of tourism, shopping, and dining. From the Carnegie Library and Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens to the exquisite shopping and dining in Shadyside, Pittsburgh is a city worthy of your exploration.

Eastern Standard Time

Best Time to Go

Like many eastern cities, Pittsburgh is most enjoyable in temperate seasons; spring and fall are exceptionally beautiful and provide ample activities to enjoy. However, if you desire an idyllic holiday experience, Pittsburgh’s winter happenings are worth your consideration. Additionally, Pittsburgh PrideFest makes a summer visit a strong contender. Essentially, you can’t go wrong — anytime you visit, Pittsburgh will have something happening for you to enjoy.

Things to Know

You can certainly get around Pittsburgh via public transportation, but you’ll likely enjoy your visit more if you rent a car. The neighborhoods in Pittsburgh are unique; you’ll know when you move from one to another due to changes in energy, store selection, restaurant offerings, and even home architecture. Sports are huge in Pittsburgh. While there’s no basketball team, football and hockey enjoy massive fanbases, meaning sports bars and merchandise shops are plentiful. For a fun and scenic way to get to the stadiums, consider taking the Gateway Clipper Ferry.

How to Get Around

Trains

Pittsburgh’s light rail system is known as the T. Be sure to pay before you board, or obtain a ConnectCard before your trip. You can transfer between the airport shuttle, the 28X, and the T (or any bus stop) for just $1.00, but remember to inform the operator if you’ll be paying cash instead of using a ConnectCard. Travel between Downtown and the North Shore is always free. You can find a map of the light rail system here. The T is more similar in service patterns to San Francisco or Washington DC than to New York City or London, but all major points are accessible via the T.

Buses

Pittsburgh’s bus system is quite robust, thanks to the numerous universities in the city. Bus stops are clearly marked by blue and white signs. ConnectCards also work on buses, or you can pay a flat fare of $2.75 in exact change, as bus drivers do not carry change.

Taxis

The primary taxi service in Pittsburgh is zTrip. You can use their app or call them at (412) 777-7777 to request a ride. Alternatively, taxis can be hailed similarly to other cities in the U.S., simply by standing near the curb and raising your hand.

Car Service

Services like Uber and Lyft are also great transportation options, particularly in a drive-heavy city like Pittsburgh. Rides are readily available, and you can choose to order a private car or share a ride with others.
