Ultimate Niagara Falls Road Trip Guide: Explore the Niagara Parkway

A Road Trip to Niagara Falls

Our Niagara Falls road trip began in Woodstock, Ontario, where we loaded up our Toyota RAV4 Limited, kindly on loan to us from Toyota Canada. With coffee in hand, I pushed start, quickly adjusted my seat preference, and put it in sport mode to drive on the highway.

We hit the 403 on-ramp to Hamilton and then hopped on the Queen Elizabeth Way towards the Falls. You can take the QEW all the way into Niagara Falls, but our road trip took us on a detour to wine country.

What to See on a Niagara Falls Road Trip

Don’t miss the awesome vineyards on your Niagara Falls road trip.

When planning your road trip, make sure to dedicate at least two full days (preferably three) in Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake. Both locations offer a perfect blend of tranquility and top attractions. You can either start in Niagara Falls to explore its rich tourist attractions or save it for the end. Regardless, don’t miss seeing Niagara Falls; it’s an extraordinary sight and certainly lives up to the hype.

Day 1 – Niagara on the Lake

Ready for my Niagara Falls road trip in our Toyota RAV4 Limited.

Ontario’s wine country surrounds the historic town of Niagara on the Lake. Wineries have flourished, providing not only tours and tastings but also beautiful spots for a picturesque stroll. We love this area for its vineyards, where we can stock our wine rack with award-winning vintages and savor the serenity of the countryside.

Without a set plan, we ventured randomly along the back roads, leading us through more vineyards and farmland. In Niagara on the Lake, you can enjoy carriage rides, old town tours, or dine at fine establishments like the Cannery Restaurant located in the Pillar and Post; Ontario’s only 5 Star Country Inn.

Whirlpool Jetboat

Niagara on the Lake is home to the thrilling Whirlpool Jetboat Tour, which departs right from the downtown dock. Be sure to add this adventure to your road trip itinerary. You can choose a covered boat tour or an open-air tour to get immersed in the experience. We’ve tried both and prefer the covered option.

Things to Do in Niagara on the Lake

Niagara Falls road trip stop #1: Niagara on the Lake

This charming area is perfect for enjoying a quieter side of your journey. It’s easy to spend days hiking through forests or cycling along the Niagara Parkway. You may find yourself leaving your vehicle parked for a few days while you explore.

Make sure to reserve a winery tour for an afternoon excursion. Choose from cycling tours, bus tours, or private drivers. However, remember to continue the road trip; there are still many sights to see!

Day 2 – Sights to See Along the Niagara Parkway

Hitting the Niagara Parkway for our road trip.

The Niagara Parkway is one of Ontario’s most beautiful drives, offering numerous scenic stops along the way. It’s a short stretch of road that packs in a wealth of attractions, making it necessary to allocate an entire day to explore.

On our first drive along this route, we rushed straight to Niagara Falls, missing all the charming attractions in between. However, we’ve since learned to explore every corner. After picking up some local produce, we tuned our satellite radio to Entertainment Weekly Radio and set off for a delightful day trip along the Niagara Parkway.

Stops Along the Niagara Parkway

Niagara Falls road trip stop #2: Fort George

The first stop out of Niagara on the Lake is Historic Fort George. A key battleground during the War of 1812, this site immerses visitors in history with fife and drum core bands, musket demonstrations, and even opportunities to shoot a musket.

Niagara Falls road trip stop #3: McFarland House

Another noteworthy historical site is McFarland House, dating back to 1800. Take a guided tour of restored rooms or enjoy afternoon tea at the popular Conservatory Tea Room; however, be sure to make reservations in advance due to its popularity.

Niagara Falls road trip stop #4: Visit a vineyard

You cannot visit Niagara on the Lake without exploring its many vineyards. Noteworthy wineries like Pellar Estates and Jackson Triggs call this area home. If you plan to sample wines, consider booking accommodation in Niagara on the Lake and parking your car for the day.

Day 3 – Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls road trip stop #13: Niagara Falls

A visit to the region is incomplete without experiencing Niagara Falls in person. We suggest spending at least two days to truly absorb the sights and sounds. The most breathtaking view occurs early in the morning at the lip of Horseshoe Falls, where visitors can feel the power of the rushing water firsthand.

Here, be cautious; the proximity to the edge is thrilling yet intimidating. Always prioritize safety, as we’ve heard stories of tourists being swept away while trying to capture daring photos.

Attractions at Niagara Falls

With your attractions pass, get up close with the stunning falls by hopping on a boat tour. Be prepared to get wet as you venture near the Horseshoe Falls!

Hornblower

The Hornblower is a standout experience, delivering the exhilarating sensation of being amidst the thundering water. Rain ponchos are provided to keep you somewhat dry as you navigate the misty spray.

Journey Behind the Falls

Tunnels under Niagara Falls

After enjoying the falls from the front, explore the experience from behind as you walk through cooling caves and passages that reveal the inner workings of this natural wonder.

Clifton Hill

Clifton Hill is filled with attractions that brim with energy and excitement. From wax museums to haunted houses, this touristy area is a must-see!

Fallsview Casino

Finally, wrap up your Niagara Falls road trip at the Fallsview Casino area. This location offers quieter and more luxurious hotel options, providing extraordinary views of both the American and Canadian Horseshoe Falls.
