The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail stretches between Praia da Marinha and Praia do Vale de Centianes. Although you can start from either end, most hikers begin at Praia da Marinha, recognized as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

As you navigate along the Atlantic Ocean, expect high viewpoints, beach access, and areas to enjoy food and wine. The adventure begins with stunning views of Acro Natural, known affectionately by our guide as Elephant Rock, and Praia da Marinha Beach. The hike is moderately challenging, so wearing quality hiking shoes and carrying water is advisable.

Getting There

By Car: From Faro, expect about a 45-minute drive to Praia da Marinha. Parking is available near the trailhead, though it fills up quickly. Be cautious of overflow parking lots with potholes and dirt roads, particularly if you have rented a car. We nearly bottomed out while trying to exit the parking area.

Keep in mind that if you drive, you will need to hike back, so account for that in your schedule.

Public Transport: Buses operate from major towns in the Algarve to Carvoeiro. From there, taxis, Ubers, or Tuk Tuks can be hired for a ride to the trailhead.

Moreover, you can also walk directly from the beach if you prefer. The trail connects to Carvoeiro, but this will extend your hike.

What to Expect on the Seven Hanging Valleys Hike

As you embark on the Seven Hanging Valleys trail hike, prepare to witness some of the most stunning landscapes. Previously, we hiked the Great Ocean Road in Australia and believed there could not be a more breathtaking location. However, the Seven Hanging Valleys boasts a similarly spectacular landscape compacted into one small area, offering continuous extraordinary views. Expect to see high sea cliffs, hidden caves, and panoramic ocean vistas; this trail provides an unforgettable experience.

If hiking the entire 5.7 km feels daunting, parking lots are located throughout the hike, granting you the option to explore a portion of the trail and its scenic views. Even if you’re not up for a full hike, visiting one or two lookout points is worth the effort.

This trail involves an up-and-down climb (hence the name Seven Hanging Valleys Trail), leading you to plateaus with Atlantic Ocean views, then down to villages and beaches. While not overly difficult, those with mobility issues may find it challenging as the ground can be uneven.

Starting from the parking lot of Praia da Marinha is relatively flat, so you can commence your journey without an uphill climb. If you wish to access the beach, there is one entry point, but expect to scramble down, and remember, you’ll need to return back up.

The most scenic section of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail begins at Praia da Marinha, so we recommend starting your hike here. Moreover, if you take your time along the trail, you can conclude your journey in Carvoeiro, indulging in dinner, drinks, or shopping afterward.

Begin early in the morning to beat the heat and the crowds.

Things to See on the Seven Hanging Valleys Hike

Here’s a guide to enhance your adventure:

1. Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha serves as the launch point for most hikers, though it tends to get crowded. Many people will hike out briefly to see Elephant Rock and one of Portugal’s most stunning beaches from the trail before returning. Continuing onward will help to disperse the crowds.

Take your time to reach various viewpoints. Enjoy beach access where you can relax on the golden sands, enjoy unique perspectives of the beach’s iconic double arch, and explore sea caves.

2. Clifftop Views

As you ascend from Praia da Marinha, expect more impressive views of the Atlantic Ocean. Various trails lead to high plateaus, revealing breathtaking views of sea arches and the picturesque coastline.

3. Benagil Cave

Benagil Cave is one of the Algarve’s prominent attractions, and it is visible from the trail through its skylight. However, there is restricted access inside the cave, with ropes surrounding the area, making the view somewhat limited.

This spot is a popular stop along the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, and there is a nearby parking lot, so visitors often walk out to view it.

If you’re keen on experiencing Benagil Cave from the inside, consider booking a guided boat or kayak tour. As access rules change frequently, we recommend staying informed. Note that swimming or stepping onto the beach inside the cave is prohibited; only authorized tours can provide access.

4. Praia de Benagil

Your next stop is Praia de Benagil, an ideal location to rest, have lunch, and enjoy the stunning beach. You will need to descend some stairs to access the beach and town; however, the trail is well-marked with yellow and red stripes on rocks and signposts, making navigation straightforward.

The trail is adorned with wildflowers and resilient shrubs. While gazing at the water below, remember to glance up periodically for seabirds flying overhead. Occasionally, one might even spot dolphins in the waters. We encountered them on our boat tour not far offshore.

5. Farol de Alfanzina (Alfanzina Lighthouse)

The trail from Benagil to Alfanzina Lighthouse weaves along rugged cliffs. Expect an uphill climb with some steps along the way. Upon nearing Alfanzina Lighthouse, you will encounter lush Mediterranean vegetation and the occasional sighting of seabirds.

This picturesque lighthouse rests atop a high cliff, characterized by its classic white tower and red roof. This portion of the trail is moderately challenging, featuring well-marked paths that may occasionally be rocky or uneven. Hikers can take numerous opportunities to pause and absorb the stunning vistas, including views of Cabo Caroeir rock formations and the famous Leixão do Ladrão.

6. Vale Centeanes Beach

Vale Centeanes Beach marks the trail’s endpoint, making it a perfect place to unwind, rent an umbrella, or enjoy a refreshing drink. This beautiful beach features a large sea cave, golden sands, and clear waters. Towering limestone cliffs surround the beach, providing additional small caves and grottos to explore.

There is a snack bar, and organized tours can be arranged here. Despite its captivating beauty and available amenities, Vale Centeanes Beach often remains less crowded than some well-known Algarve beaches. Many hikers do not reach this far, providing a serene environment to relax before continuing or catching a taxi.

7. Tivoli Carvoiero and Vale Covo Beach

If you’re staying at the Tivoli Carvoeiro like we did, you can walk back to your hotel from the beach. The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail actually connects all the way to the town of Carvoeiro.

Vale Covo Beach is an extraordinary stop featuring a large sea cave to explore. Access is only available during low tide due to stairs leading down to the beach.

Even if you aren’t staying at Tivoli Carvoeiro, you can easily travel towards town. Many visitors take advantage of the access points along the way.

8. Algar Seco

After navigating another series of ups and downs, you’ll arrive at the famous rock formations of Algar Seco, known for their scenic rock windows. Notably, Boneca Cave, which translates to “Doll’s Cave,” features two openings that frame breathtaking ocean views. A brief walkway and steps provide access to the cave, allowing visitors to enjoy the picturesque vistas.

9. Boardwalks

The trail extends all along the coast, but this point is perfect for simply enjoying the boardwalks and views until reaching the town of Carvoeiro. The boardwalk is accessible, providing a delightful way to experience coastal views as you make your way to your final destination.

10. Carvoeiro

Although the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail may have ended after a few stops, continuing on to Carvoeiro is worthwhile. The area offers numerous dining options where you can sit on a patio overlooking the beach, indulge in seafood, and sip a refreshing cocktail.

It is also easier to organize a taxi or Uber from Carvoeiro. By hiking one way instead of out-and-back, you can take in more of the ongoing Carvoeiro Coastal Walk beyond the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, and Carvoeiro features a beach for a quick dip before returning to your hotel.

Tips for Hiking the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail

Wear Proper Footwear: As sections of the trail are rocky and uneven, sturdy hiking boots or shoes with good grip are crucial.

Stay Hydrated: With no facilities along the trail, ensure to bring ample water and some snacks.

Sun Protection: The Algarve sun can be fierce, so apply sunscreen, and wear a hat and sunglasses.

Check the Weather: Avoid hiking during extreme heat or inclement weather conditions. Opt for early mornings or late afternoons when temperatures are milder.

Respect Nature: Stay on marked paths to protect the delicate coastal environment and avoid interfering with wildlife.

Safety First: Some trail sections are near cliff edges. Keep a watchful eye on your footing and maintain a safe distance from the cliff edges, as they can be unstable. We noticed many hikers standing too closely for comfort.
