Top Whale Watching Experiences in Iceland

GoTravelDaily

Our whale watching expedition was initially scheduled for the day following our arrival in Iceland; however, inclement weather resulted in the cancellation of all tours.

This adverse weather persisted for several days, prompting us to reschedule multiple times. Nonetheless, the representatives at Special Tours were exceptionally courteous and supportive over the phone, which significantly enhanced our experience.

COSTS OF WHALE WATCHING

To start, establish a reservation with Special Tours, recognized as one of the leading providers in Iceland, renowned for their helpfulness and friendliness.

  • Adults: ISK 10,000 – 15,000
  • Teenagers: Half the adult price
  • Children: ISK 0

ITEMS TO TAKE WITH YOU

Warm clothing is not necessary, as a thermal suit will be provided. However, it may be prudent to pack extra warmth for children as there is also an indoor section available, mitigating concerns regarding the cold.

Ensure you bring your camera, and activate the sports mode if your device offers this option; this will be crucial for capturing the action. Also, don’t forget your sunglasses; although it may seem counterintuitive during winter, the sunlight reflected on the water necessitates their use.

DEPARTURE TIMES

The tours depart at 9 am, 10 am, 1 pm, and 2 pm throughout the year, with additional departures in summer at 5 pm and 8 pm due to extended daylight hours.

The duration of the tour typically lasts around 3 to 3.5 hours; however, be aware that tours may occasionally extend beyond that timeframe, so it is advisable not to schedule other activities immediately afterwards.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Keep an eye out for seagulls, as they tend to congregate around areas abundant with marine life.

Dolphins are generally more approachable than whales, so the likelihood of encountering them is higher.

Killer whales may deter other species, leading to the possibility that if they have been sighted, other whales may retreat to areas further away.

To spot the whales, boats set out earlier in the day to scout the optimal locations. Environmental concern takes precedence, as whale watching aims to be ecologically responsible.

Be observant for water sprays, as they can indicate the presence of whales in the vicinity.

PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORIES!

During our whale watching experience, we opted to sit outside to increase our chances of glimpsing whales.

Ultimately, our luck with whale sightings was limited, yet we did manage to spot a pair of minke whales. While I attempted to capture their image, I initially thought I had missed the opportunity!

Upon reviewing my photographs at home, I discovered that I had indeed captured a shot of them!

Check out the image below! Although it isn’t the highest quality when zoomed in, it certainly serves as a memorable keepsake! 😉

It is worth noting that the dolphins were the highlight of the excursion!

Initially, we spotted a few dolphins, generating excitement among the passengers as they frequently breached the surface.

Our sighting escalated from a couple to three, four, and ultimately around eight or nine dolphins engaging playfully in and out of the water!

As we returned to shore, we were thoroughly satisfied after an exceptional afternoon with Special Tours.

If you wish to experience the sighting of whales, dolphins, and even puffins, this is the service provider you should contact.

They are conveniently located at the harbor in Reykjavik, allowing for in-person visits or reservations to secure your tickets in advance.
