Summary
Situated just a few hundred miles off the West African coast, the compact Portuguese archipelago of Madeira is an exceptional destination. Notably, there are numerous remarkable locations and activities scattered throughout the island.
Our most recent excursion truly illuminated the dramatic nature of this archipelago, which undoubtedly deserves a prominent place on your travel itinerary.
For years, I had heard tales of Madeira, yet for some inexplicable reason, I never ventured there, which now invokes a sense of regret.
Had I been cognizant of the breathtaking landscapes, stunning vistas, and breathtaking scenery that pervades each of the islands, I would have traveled far sooner. Thankfully, we recently rectified this by taking our inaugural journey, and the experience was immensely gratifying!
For a long time, the enchanting island of Madeira had captured my attention, yet the opportunity to explore this paradise eluded me until recently.
Reveling in the breathtaking splendor, I discovered that the landscapes of Madeira are reminiscent of the picturesque scenery associated with the islands of the Pacific, offering an experience akin to that of a European rendition of Hawaii.
How to Access Madeira
Like numerous other European islands, Madeira boasts excellent flight connections from the European mainland, the Azores, and the UK.
If you’re traveling from more distant locations, it is simple to connect via Portugal or major cities such as London or Amsterdam. Should you require any guidance on reaching the islands, do not hesitate to reach out; we are always eager to assist.
What to Pack
Madeira is an incredibly diverse island, necessitating more than just swimwear and sunscreen (though these are essential). 🤣
It is advisable to bring various layers and a windbreaker, as the temperature can change rapidly in the mountainous regions of Madeira.
For example, while the temperature may be a delightful 30 degrees at sea level, be prepared for freezing conditions at higher elevations.
As you embark on your explorations of this beautiful archipelago, ensure you have a good-quality bag for carrying your gear, clothing, sunscreen, and ample water.
The Osprey Trillium 45 was our choice for this trip, primarily due to its versatile carrying options to suit varying terrain. As conditions change swiftly, it is advantageous to have an adaptable bag.
For instance, while on the beach with minimal weight, we used it as a shoulder bag, while transitioning to the mountains with heavier loads of water required a switch to a crossbody configuration for easier transport.
Accommodation Recommendations
Madeira offers a variety of exceptional lodging choices. For a touch of luxury, consider staying at Quinta Da Casa Branca, a stunning property conveniently located near the heart of Funchal.
If you desire a centrally located hotel in Funchal, the Sé Boutique Hotel is an ideal option, providing immediate access to historical Funchal.
For an authentic experience, consider exploring Airbnb for exceptional options including infinity pool villas, rustic hillside cottages, and even some glamping-style tipis in the countryside.

The encounter was magical, particularly as we observed two different species engaging in cooperative hunting for food. This experience certainly ranks as one of the top activities to engage in while in Madeira for wildlife enthusiasts.
