- Getting to Governors Island: Ferry service operates daily from late May until late September. On weekends and Labor Day, ferries leave from Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6. Daily service is also available from Manhattan’s Battery Maritime Building (10 South Street), right next to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. - Visiting Hours: The Island opens at 10 a.m. daily, closing at 6 p.m. on weekdays and 7 p.m. on weekends.

- Governors Island offers beverages and water for purchase, yet lacks water fountains.
- While there are diverse food options available, it’s also a perfect spot for a personal picnic.
- Note that dogs and other pets are not permitted on Governors Island.

History
Governors Island, steeped in history, served as a military base for nearly two centuries before its closure by the Coast Guard in 1996. Subsequently, in 2003, the Federal Government sold the majority of the island to the people of New York for just $1. While the Federal Government and the National Park Service administer 22 acres of Governors Island as the Governors Island National Monument, managing two forts from the 1812 era, the remaining 150 acres are overseen by the Governors Island Preservation and Education Corporation. This area features an array of educational, nonprofit, and commercial activities tailored for visitors.
