Summary of the Itinerary
Our journey to the Basque Country in Spain stands out as one of our most extraordinary experiences. We made new acquaintances, savored diverse and delightful cuisines, and cultivated a more adventurous spirit toward traveling.
Until then, I primarily sought out destinations I was already aware of, but visiting the Basque country marked a transformative moment. It was a chance to explore a region with limited prior knowledge, leading us to navigate our adventures as we progressed.
The liberation was remarkable, as it uncovered a myriad of travel possibilities previously unconsidered. Consequently, we embraced the idea of exploring uncharted territories and being spontaneous about our excursions.
The Basque Country’s innate beauty is another aspect worth noting. The landscapes are striking and distinct compared to other regions in Spain that we’ve previously visited, complemented by an inviting pace of life.
Here, community ties remain strong and intertwined, fostering relationships centered on family and friends, even in the bustling urban centers.
This guide provides a curated itinerary to assist you in experiencing the essence of the Spanish Basque Country over a four-day period.
Day One
1.) Arrival in Bilbao
Upon your arrival at Bilbao Airport, it is advisable to collect your hired car. Although public transport is an option, renting a vehicle provides greater flexibility, especially for accessing the more remote areas of the Basque Country.
2.) Drive to Arantzazu
Make your way to Arantzazu in Oñati. Pause for a traditional Basque meal at the Sindika restaurant, where the surrounding views are as noteworthy as the meal.

Participate in a guided visit of the Sanctuary of Arantzazu, an ancient Franciscan monastery of significant regional importance.
4.) Explore the Arrikrutz Caves
Visit the Arrikrutz caves in Oñati, located in proximity to the Sanctuary.
The caves offer a fascinating historical insight and are home to numerous extinct prehistoric species, including cave lions!
5.) Check into your hotel
We opted to stay at Hotel Torre Zumeltzegi, a historical residence formerly inhabited by the count who governed the region. This establishment has been transformed into a hotel by his descendants who have maintained ownership for several generations.
6.) Enjoy an evening beverage
Venture out for an evening drink and enjoy a leisurely stroll around the village. Dining is typically not an early affair in the Basque Country.
7.) Rest for the evening

Proceed to Pasaia, where you can delve into Basque cuisine at Ziaboga restaurant. Engage to the extent you feel comfortable before relishing all the delectable food you’ve anticipated throughout the morning. (Be sure to try the monkfish while you’re there – it is exceptional!).
3.) Visit the Basque Maritime Heritage Foundation
A boat ride from the restaurant to the Albaola Foundation (Basque Maritime Heritage Foundation) will reward you with an intriguing understanding of Basque culture!
You may not need to linger long here, but the boat ride alone along with the opportunity to bask in the sun while allowing your meal to settle is worthwhile.

Drive to San Marko’s Fort in Errenteria for a guided tour of this historic fortress.
There is also a bar on-site, so enjoy a refreshing drink afterwards!
5.) Stay in Hondarribia
Travel to Rural Hotel Higeralde located in Hondarribia.
The next day will involve exploring Hondarribia, and expect a delightful culinary experience from the owner, coupled with plenty of delectable Spanish wine.

Pintxos constitute a quintessential experience in the Spanish Basque Country, particularly enjoyable on Sundays.
