I visited Turkey with my family around a decade ago, where I vividly remember the aroma of fish frying under the Galata Bridge in Istanbul and the vibrant atmosphere of local bazaars. The intricate designs of mosques and the surreal Martian landscape of Cappadocia remain etched in my memory.
This small group tour provided profound insights and access to some of Turkey’s most fascinating sites and their histories. Additionally, I formed lasting friendships with my travel companions. Here’s an overview of our adventures through Anatolia.
Get lost in Istanbul
I arrived in Istanbul early, which allowed me to savor balık dürüm (fish wraps) drizzled with pomegranate molasses from a street vendor, complemented by kaymak (traditional clotted cream) the next morning. Our group bonded over brunch at Balat Kapi, where we shared simit (circular bread covered in sesame seeds) while enjoying menemen (a dish of eggs, tomatoes, peppers, and spices), cheese, and honeycomb. Balat, a historic Jewish quarter behind the old Greek district, boasts colorful houses, unique clothing stores, cozy cafés, and antique shops.
Shortly after, we explored the lively Spice Bazaar, where vivid pyramids of lokum (Turkish delight) and spice towers welcomed us with intoxicating scents. We visited an ancient shisha teahouse, ascended the Galata Tower, and paid homage to the Aya Sofya and Süleymaniye Mosque. However, the highlight was an evening food tour, showcasing six local eateries and the captivating tales behind them. We relished kokorec (seasoned offal wrapped in lamb or goat intestines) and the famous late-night wet burger, a scrumptious, steamed version of the beloved classic.

Marvel at ancient wonders in Selçuk
The primary attraction in the tranquil town of Selçuk is the magnificently preserved Ephesus. This ancient port city features both Hellenic and Roman relics dating back to the 10th century B.C. It boasts some of the best-preserved ruins in Turkey, and it’s astonishing to realize that only 20% of the site has been unearthed. As one strolls among ancient pillars, sits in the 25,000-capacity theatre, encounters stunning statues, and explores crumbling libraries, the experience is simply mind-boggling. The abundance of friendly cats adds to the charm, unless you have allergies.
That evening, we walked uphill through the quaint village of Şirince and dined on traditional Turkish ravioli (in smaller portions) topped with yogurt sauce at Pervin Teyze.

Turkey’s coastline is stunning, with beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters ideal for a getaway. Our journey passed through Fethiye, a vibrant coastal town featuring an ‘Emoji Street’ adorned with emoticons. We enjoyed some of the best pide (flatbread topped with various ingredients) and lahmacun (Turkish-style pizza), along with tavuk göğsü, a pudding-like dessert that tastes surprisingly unique.
Just over 100 kilometers away lies Kas, a charming seaside town where visitors can unwind with cocktails while enjoying beautiful ocean views. One of the best spots to catch the sunset, besides local bars, is at the 1st-century B.C. Antiphellos Theatre, a favorite picnic destination for locals.

Cruise the Turquoise Coast by boat
Our group unanimously chose the Kekova boat trip as a highlight of our Turkish excursion. Located off the coast of Antalya, this journey offers an excellent way to uncover hidden swimming spots and explore the sunken city of Simena. We hiked to a castle’s summit, with delightful stops for natural ice cream at the quirky I Am Here cafe, where the entertaining owner repeats the phrase “I Am Here.”
On our boat, GIZEMHA, we were treated exceptionally by Sebahat and Mehmet, a couple serving an elaborate feast from their compact kitchen and charcoal grill while we enjoyed swimming. That evening, raki was freely poured, dancing was encouraged, and we gazed at the stars as we curled up on mattresses on the deck, counting shooting stars as we drifted into slumber.

Discover there’s more to Cappadocia than hot air balloons
It’s been nearly a decade since my last visit to Cappadocia, and I was surprised at how much it has changed. Fortunately, our local guide helped us steer clear of overcrowded tourist spots, allowing us to delve deeper into Cappadocia’s rich history and culture, while many travelers seemed fixated on snapping selfies at popular balloon viewpoints.
Though indulging in a sunrise hot-air balloon ride is worth considering, weather conditions could affect your chance of going. Instead, we embarked on a magical and slightly challenging guided bike tour starting from Ürgüp, weaving between the enchanting fairy chimneys that define Cappadocia’s beauty and heritage recognized by Unesco.
