Summary
Winter is approaching, as per John Snow’s constant reminders! The season has finally arrived in London, albeit without the white walkers or the Lannisters.
Unlike the chaotic characters from “Game of Thrones,” winter can actually be a delightful time to explore the city.
Indeed, this time of year can be quite enchanting for exploring the city.
1.) Borough Market for the Mince Pies and Mulled Wine
Fortunately, it’s winter! There is no longer a need for a ‘justification’ to indulge in mulled wine and hot cider at Borough Market, even if friends raise eyebrows at your third cup! At this time of year, Borough Market truly comes alive with a vibrant assortment of festive foods, beverages, and holiday decor.
Take a leisurely walk on a crisp winter evening and savor your mulled wine and mince pies from various independent vendors and market stalls.
2.) Go Underground
Discover one of London’s many outstanding (and cozy) indoor venues, with the underground Cinema Club being among the most renowned. This secret entertainment spot is situated within the historic underground tube lines of London (specifically in Waterloo).
This venue is especially suited for viewing classic Christmas films such as ‘Miracle on 34th Street’, ‘The Holiday’, and ‘Love Actually’. Be sure to dress warmly, bring a comfortable blanket (or a partner), and a hot flask of cocoa to enjoy a perfect evening, all while avoiding the gusty winds and chilly temperatures of London.
3.) Gather a Few Bruises from the Ice-Rink
Engaging in ice skating is almost a rite of passage during winter. One of the most stunning venues has to be Somerset House, where one can undoubtedly spend several enjoyable hours skating (or tumbling) along the picturesque Strand.
Alternatively, consider visiting the Queen’s House Ice Skating rink in a scenic location. Just be prepared to return home with a bruise or two—or maybe even a newly discovered talent for ice skating.
4.) Build a Snowman in Hyde Park
Having resided in London for over five years, I can attest to having only managed to construct a ‘satisfactory’ snowman on just one occasion, which is quite limited.
This year, I sincerely hope for several more snowy days to indulge in some playful activities! Hyde Park is among my favorite parks to visit, and it transforms into a true winter wonderland when covered in snow.
5.) Stroll across the South Bank
Every year, around November, the South Bank winter market opens, showcasing its festive allure capable of charming even the most stoic individuals into embracing the holiday spirit once more.
Indulge in freshly baked spiced apple pie and hot cocoa while you explore the diverse craft and curiosity stalls that line the Thames.
6.) Take a Ramble across London
One of the most remarkable aspects of London is its diverse range of locations to discover, particularly enchanting during the winter season.
Consider exploring notable walking routes such as the Jubilee Greenway Walk, The London Loop, or the scenic canals from King’s Cross to Little Venice. Just make sure to wear a reliable pair of boots to prevent a hazardous slip!
7.) Visit Father Christmas at Fortnum & Mason’s
Distinct from typical children’s encounters with Father Christmas, Fortnum & Mason offers a grotto that features a Victorian portrayal of Father Christmas.
This Father Christmas engages both adults and children through captivating storytelling and charm, creating an atmosphere where everyone behaves impeccably in the spirit of Christmas.
8.) Get Lost at Winter Wonderland
Have you ever pondered where to find a plethora of stalls, festive treats, and exhilarating rides all under one roof during Christmas in the city? Look no further than Winter Wonderland.
Every winter, hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to Winter Wonderland, and this year is no exception. In case you happen to lose your way while navigating to the venue, remember to disembark from the tube at one of the following stations: Bond Street, Green Park, Knightsbridge, Marble Arch, or Hyde Park Corner.
