From volcanic black sands to secluded spots where you can stroll for miles without encountering another soul, Nicaragua’s beaches have something to offer everyone. The challenge lies in deciding which beach to explore first. Here’s a roundup of the most remarkable beaches in Nicaragua.

Playa Maderas

Playa Maderas, just 30 minutes from San Juan del Sur, embodies the laid-back spirit of Nicaragua. This beach is a refuge from the bustling party scene, making it ideal for relaxation. A selection of accommodations and eateries caters to visitors seeking a chill atmosphere. For a breathtaking view of the bay and stunning sunsets, visit Arte-Sano. Digital nomads flock to Selina Maderas for its Wi-Fi and daily yoga classes. Surf enthusiasts will appreciate Maderas for its exceptional beach breaks, where local instructors, surfboard rentals, and cold beers are readily available.

Playa Majagual and Mathilda

If you’re searching for an untouched, secluded paradise, Playa Majagual is easily accessible, just 18 minutes from San Juan del Sur. This hidden gem is celebrated for its 656-foot (200 meters) bay, characterized by gentle waves and pristine sands. Typically, no more than ten people share the beach at any time, providing a serene escape into nature.

The only eatery available serves basic but satisfying food, and it complements the charm of Mathilda, the beach next door. Divided by a rock formation, both beaches are easily reachable within one block of each other.

While Mathilda has similarly clear sands, it is known for its more robust surf. The Matilda hostel offers a relaxed stay right in front of this beach. Don’t be surprised if you encounter crabs at night or, with a bit of luck, a nesting turtle!

Balcones de Majagual provides a more upscale option near both beaches. It’s important to come prepared as there are no corner stores in the vicinity. If visiting during the rainy season, a 4×4 vehicle is recommended due to the slippery dirt roads.

Playa el Coco

Located just south of San Juan del Sur, Playa el Coco is among the most family-friendly beaches in Nicaragua. Its gentle waves and welcoming atmosphere are complemented by the presence of local wildlife.

Wake up to the sounds of howler monkeys and watch out for urracas trying to swipe your breakfast. Playa el Coco lies just over a mile (2 km) from Playa La Flor, a crucial turtle sanctuary. Night excursions to witness nesting turtles are common, particularly during the crescent moon phases when turtles are most active.

La Flor is one of only seven beaches globally that host massive turtle nesting events, with thousands arriving simultaneously. Devoted turtle enthusiasts often camp at La Flor for weeks to experience this rare phenomenon. However, it’s essential to adhere to the established rules enforced by the rangers in this protected area. Flash photography is prohibited, and flashlights must be covered with red paper, which will be provided.

Playa Amarillo

This stunning southwestern beach boasts incredible vistas and is entirely free from commercial development, thanks to local efforts to maintain public access. Playa Amarillo’s beautiful yellowish sands are complemented by some of the finest sunsets in Nicaragua. A short 15-minute walk from Playa Gigante, the main fishing village, this beach is a must-visit. However, travelers should remain vigilant about their belongings in Gigante due to petty theft.

La Boquita

La Boquita is one of the most authentic beaches in Nicaragua, renowned for its local charm. Situated just an hour and a half from the capital, Managua, this destination is celebrated for its delectable local cuisine, featuring everything from fresh red snapper to lobster (langosta a la termidor) and live clams. It’s a true foodie haven, and a conversation with a local fisherman could lead to an unforgettable fishing trip.

Las Peñitas

The beachfront locale of Las Peñitas, close to the city of León, has gained popularity among visitors. This relaxed area is emerging as a tourist hotspot while maintaining its charming atmosphere filled with a variety of activities. Easy access to Reserva Natural Isla Juan Venado allows for fantastic turtle-watching experiences.

Playa Popoyo

Popoyo is the ultimate destination for surfers, featuring competition-level waves that attract thrill-seekers looking to catch the next big ride. The availability of numerous surf camps fosters a vibrant international community. However, this beach is not suitable for beginners due to its challenging conditions.

San Juan del Sur

As the most frequented beach town in Nicaragua, San Juan del Sur caters to a diverse crowd. Its lively atmosphere combines local charm with international flair, making it an ideal base for exploring southern beaches while providing ample dining and nightlife options. The famous ‘Sunday Funday’ events draw in locals and visitors alike for unforgettable parties.

Exclusive Beaches

Nicaragua is also home to a range of luxurious and secluded beaches that boast top-tier services. Rancho Santana features five beaches within its property: Playa Dunas, Playa los Perros, Playa Santana, Playa Escondida, and Playa Rosada, providing a curated farm-to-beach experience. Morgan’s Rock combines jungle ambiance with luxury living while promoting sustainability. Lastly, Aqua Wellness Resort in Redonda Bay remains a perennial favorite among honeymooners.
