Upon my arrival at our remarkable chalet (and following a cozy night’s slumber), I awoke early, eager for a day on the slopes.
I am not usually an early riser (although I aspire to be), yet the thrill of skiing on the picturesque runs in Tignes surpassed the effects of any caffeinated beverage or alarm clock. The anticipation alone was sufficient to propel me into action.
As I previously mentioned, skiing is invariably a progressive learning experience for me. Hence, I endeavor to allocate time with an instructor whenever I visit ski resorts.
In my perspective, continuous mentorship is invaluable when honing skiing skills, particularly as one navigates various slopes. With that said, we proceeded to arrange a session with a local instructor through SkiBro.
SkiBro functions similar to an Airbnb for skiing. Essentially, independent instructors can be found on the platform, allowing users to select an instructor based on preferences. The platform provides access to instructor videos and genuine reviews, making it straightforward to identify an individual suited to one’s personality and skill level.
After arranging to meet David (our instructor) and finalizing our meeting point in Tignes-les-Brévières, we made our way to the base of the slopes.
As we had not skied since our last trip to Canada, David suggested observing our skiing technique before attempting more challenging runs. This provided an ideal opportunity to refresh my skiing skills. This moment always reminds me that skiing resembles riding a bicycle; one never truly forgets but often fears they might!
Within 30 minutes, we felt prepared for the more exhilarating runs, and I was filled with excitement!
After navigating a few chairlifts and gondolas, we reached the summit. The vistas were breathtaking, revealing views all the way to Italy in the distance.
Through the remainder of the morning, we refined our skills, gradually progressing towards steeper and narrower runs, which soon led us to lunchtime.
After securing our skis, we made our way to L’Armailly in Les Brévières, where I indulged in a hearty, carbohydrate-rich meal (and a steak for Yaya). I was absolutely famished!
The day of skiing had generated an enormous appetite. In my eagerness, I devoured my meal before even taking a photograph! Suffice it to say, it was delightful.
With satiated appetites, we opted for a leisurely stroll around Tignes Les Brévières to further explore the quaint village.
Tignes Les Brévières offers a charming ambiance for a leisurely walk, despite my frustration with wearing bulky ski boots which often leave me feeling robotic.
After browsing the local market and traversing its charming alleys, we made our way back to the slopes. The snow was pristine and light, which I always find facilitates better skiing.
Before the arrival of 5 pm, my fatigued legs began to wane.
Reflecting on the day, we may have benefited from focusing on skiing during the morning, yet my enthusiasm to maximize every moment on the slopes prevailed until the ski lifts ceased operations.
Upon arriving at the gondola station, we met the team from Black Diamond, who assisted us in returning to our chalet. It was a relief to avoid lugging our skis through the town; after just a few minutes of carrying them, I typically become quite irritable. I seem to struggle with holding skis, as they tend to feel heavier with every passing moment.
The exhaustion felt in my muscles after a day of skiing was the perfect justification for a revitalizing soak in the pool and steam room; it was sublime.
As twilight approached, I was delighted to hear a live band performing on the terrace, bringing to mind the private Apres Ski Terrace shared among a select few chalets. After quickly drying off, we ventured directly towards the music!
As the snow started to fall, we enjoyed an assortment of hot mulled wine and beer around the outdoor log fire. This ambiance alone would have rendered the evening extraordinary, yet the addition of live music created a unique atmosphere reminiscent of a miniature music festival amidst the snow.
As the clock struck 7 pm, I had become thoroughly fatigued, prompting me to seize an opportunity for a brief ‘disco nap’ within the cozy confines of the chalet.
Upon awakening, I realized I was tardy for dinner! Our reservation was set for 8 pm, so I hastily showered, donned some clothing, and proceeded to La Sachette.
This location exudes charm, enhanced by the inviting ambiance of a log fire, cozy alpine cottage-style rooms, and the most comforting winter cuisine.
Prior to our journey to Tignes, I held onto the hope that at least one dining establishment would serve fondue.
It is my personal indulgence during ski trips, and I always rationalize that the skiing workout warrants the treat!
To my delight, fondue was indeed featured on the menu! I believe my heart skipped a beat in sheer joy.
Undeniably, while Yaya has a fondness for fondue, he was tempted by escargot and lamb for dinner, which he thoroughly enjoyed. However, the real highlight for me was the expansive bowl of melted cheese, bread, and meats.
Truthfully, if it were considered socially acceptable, I would have licked the bowl clean!
Before we knew it, the evening had arrived, and we decided to conclude our day on that note.
With enhanced skiing confidence, we eagerly anticipate the following day!
