However, navigating the varied slopes can differ vastly in terms of accessibility; some locations are amenable for beginners, while others offer thrilling challenges for more adept skiers. Additionally, snowfall frequency fluctuates significantly among destinations, impacting overall experience – with some being bustling with activity, whereas others provide a peaceful retreat.

After an exhilarating day outdoors, unwind with après-ski beverages at the Polar Bear, partake in familial fondue dinners, or dance the night away at vibrant nightclubs. Les 2 Alpes truly caters to every visitor!
In addition, its relatively compact layout makes it a lively resort contained within 2 km, making navigation to slopes, shops, and winter activities effortless. The picturesque expanse of snow-capped mountains makes it one of the most coveted ski destinations to visit in winter.
2.) Alpe d’Huez
Situated high in the French Alps (approximately 1800m), Alpe d’Huez represents one of the prime skiing locations if you are searching for sun-soaked slopes. This sunny disposition is a result of Alpe d’Huez’s establishment as a ski destination due to its clarity on sunny days and snowy nights. Such conditions create ideal skiing experiences, especially for those who appreciate breathtaking views.
For skilled skiers, Alpe d’Huez is the ultimate destination; it has been recognized as the Best European Ski Resort in 2019!
It is known for the longest black run in the world, catering perfectly to those seeking a challenge. That said, a plethora of slopes adjusted to all skill levels ensures that novices are also accommodated. Notably, Alpe d’Huez is among the few resorts that provide night skiing.
Don’t forget to visit the Ice Caves, embark on husky rides, and stop by Underground for live music.
3.) Banff
Among my preferred destinations in Canada, Banff possesses an abundance of appeal! It is conveniently situated about a three-hour drive from Calgary, making it ideal for skiing enthusiasts who also wish to explore the national park itself.
To ski, reach Sunshine Village, which offers an abundance of slopes and stunning vistas.
After skiing, take a hike through Johnston Canyon, navigate the Icefields Parkway, visit Lake Louise, and explore the bubble lake of Lake Abraham.
All these activities are within a few hours of Sunshine Village, making it a premier skiing destination.
4.) Val d’Isere
Val d’Isere is a longstanding favorite in Europe and a highly sought-after destination for British skiers. The atmosphere here is distinctly international, making it an excellent choice for those desiring a reputable ski destination.
Upon arrival, one quickly recognizes the stunning village ambiance that simultaneously provides a vibrant atmosphere. This combination makes it an ideal engagement for those who appreciate partying alongside skiing.
The entirety of Val d’Isere is scenic, and it is complemented by a multitude of slopes extending across to Tignes. On our last visit, we skied from Tignes to Val d’Isere, and it was an absolutely exhilarating experience!
For a heartwarming meal, visit La Corniche, renowned for its delectable Savoyard dishes that are sure to satisfy.
5.) Whistler
Whistler is arguably one of the most renowned ski towns in Canada, offering diverse experiences for all. It represents an exceptional space for skiing while also serving as a gateway to the captivating region of British Columbia.
During your stay, explore the vast expanse of slopes that traverse across the mountain ranges, totaling approximately 8000 acres!
Moreover, if your visit extends beyond a couple of days, consider indulging in the Nordic Spa (which is particularly rejuvenating when the weather is chilly) or embarking on exhilarating snowmobiling adventures across the more secluded parts surrounding Whistler.
A fantastic option involves complementing your excursion to Whistler with a city trip; one can drive to Vancouver. Alternatively, consider a seaplane trip to Vancouver (as we did), providing remarkable views of the stunning, unspoiled natural surroundings.

6.) Tignes
Concealed within the mountains yet adjacent to Val d’Isere, Tignes is slightly smaller but undoubtedly ranks among the top skiing locations within the French Alps.
The aspect I appreciate most about Tignes is the expansive slopes that ensure an enjoyable skiing experience. Sometimes, one can appreciate a skiing outing that doesn’t demand unwavering concentration on the trail, particularly when magnificent views beckon.
Moreover, make sure to experience Le Panoramic, a cozy restaurant situated at over 300 meters elevation, where you can enjoy delectable meals.
7.) Sun Peaks
Another cherished location in British Columbia, Sun Peaks has yet to be widely recognized by international travelers, though it unquestionably merits attention! We enjoyed a delightful few days skiing here, as the entire resort is beautifully constructed. Furthermore, it ranks as Canada’s second-largest ski area, making it an exceptional choice for a skiing retreat.
If you are feeling adventurous (and are an advanced skier), take on Freddy’s Nightmare; I have yet to muster the courage to attempt it, given its daunting reputation. On the other hand, Sun Peaks is also equipped with numerous family-friendly runs for a more relaxed experience.
Additionally, be sure to pack ample sun protection, as UV exposure can be significant in this region.
After several days of skiing, consider trying your hand at ice fishing on the frozen lake. We opted to venture out early at around 7 am and ended up successfully catching fish through the icy surface!
8.) Zermatt
Zermatt is likely among the most picturesque and alluring ski destinations in Switzerland. Additionally, it is frequently associated with favorable skiing conditions and features a variety of slopes that cater to all skill levels.
One crucial detail to bear in mind is that access to Zermatt is strictly regulated, as no vehicles are permitted into the town. However, you can enjoy one of the most scenic train rides to reach the town itself.
Once arrived, observe that there are actually four principal ski areas to explore: Sunnegga, Gornergrat, Klein Matterhorn, and Schwarzsee. Truly, visitors will be spoiled for choice.
For memorable après-ski experiences, head to Hennu Stall for an assortment of live music and DJs – perfect for relaxation and socializing with friends.
For a unique experience, consider spending a night in an igloo complete with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn itself; it is undoubtedly a remarkable overnight stay in intricately decorated ice rooms.
9.) Zell Am See
Situated in Austria, right along the shores of Lake Zell, Zell am See ranks as one of the finest skiing spots, particularly for those who cherish picturesque lakeside villages.
I hold a special affection for Zell am See, having learned to ski here initially. Beyond my bias, it remains an excellent locale for spending several days exploring the slopes on Schmittenhöhe mountain.
Furthermore, if you need a brief reprieve from skiing, Zell am See also features several established snowshoe trails and winter hiking options.
10.) Montgenevre
Nestled within the mountains in southeastern France, Montgenevre offers a beautiful skiing experience and remains comparatively quieter than the more popular resorts like Val d’Isere.
Positioned within skiing distance from the Italian border, Montgenevre is an exceptional destination if you desire to enjoy breathtaking slopes in France while taking a trip over to Italy for dinner. This surreal experience is genuinely worthwhile.
