Top 8 Beaches in Santorini You Must Visit in 2025

The Best Beaches in Santorini, Greece

Few are not awed by the breathtaking beauty of Santorini, with its stunning ring of dramatically colored cliffs surrounding the vast, ancient caldera. However, beyond the views, it’s the beaches that fill your days, and rightfully so. Whether you wish to party, relax, sunbathe, swim, enjoy seaside meals, escape solitude, or simply shed your clothes, the island accommodates all preferences.

Each beach is a unique volcanic mix of coarse sand and pebbles, ranging from burnt brown to deep charcoal. The eastern and southern coasts feature the sandiest beaches, which are also more sheltered, making them ideal for swimming. Here are the very best beaches in Santorini.

1. Red Beach

Known as Kokkini Beach, the popular Red Beach is a star of countless social media posts thanks to its eponymous red cliffs that tower over the brownish sand. Sheltered from the winds, it’s a convenient spot to unwind for an entire day. Beachside tavernas provide loungers for rent. The beach is especially picturesque in the late afternoon when the sun casts a warm glow over the sands.

Getting There: There is a small parking area with a bus stop above Red Beach, but be prepared for a slightly perilous walk down. Alternatively, consider a quick boat trip from nearby Akrotiri Beach, known for its ancient ruins.

2. Kamari Beach

Santorini’s main resort town, Kamari, boasts a long stretch of brown sand and clear, calm waters that beckon visitors to jump in! The beach is lined with cafes, bars, and clubs, ensuring food, drinks, and music are never far away. While it can get busy in summer, renting a lounger is easy if you arrive early. A variety of family-friendly water sports are available. For diving enthusiasts, Navy’s Waterworld Dive Centre offers a range of underwater experiences exploring lava caves and more.

Getting There: Kamari is easily accessible by frequent buses or by car from Fira, and it serves as a hub for small boats offering quick trips to more secluded beaches.

3. White Beach

For an ideal escape from the bustling Red Beach, look no further than White (Aspri) Beach, a sheltered cove located just a few hundred meters west along the south coast. Despite its name, the beach features dark volcanic sand complemented by stunning gleaming cliffs. Limited vendors provide refreshments and loungers, so be sure to bring along what you’ll need for a peaceful day in August.

4. Black Beach

Located near White and Red Beaches, Mesa Pigadia is often called Black Beach. It’s less crowded than the other two and well-equipped with sun loungers and parasols for hire. A few taverns are available alongside photogenic villas built into the rock formations. The pristine waters here teem with marine life, making it an exceptional spot for snorkeling and diving.

Getting There: Access the beach via small boats departing from Akrotiri or by bus on the Fira to Akrotiri route.

5. Armeni Beach

Often overlooked, Armeni Beach is located directly below the picturesque village of Oia, at the northern end of the island. It offers some of the best views of Santorini’s caldera from the shore. The beach features rocky and pebbly “sand”, so footwear is essential. However, the serene atmosphere and refreshments from waterfront tavernas make it well worth a visit. The water here is among the clearest on the island, with striking rocks along the shoreline perfect for plunging into the sea.

Getting There: Access the beach via a 980ft (300m) walk down from the Oia bus stop or by driving down a small dirt track.

6. Baxedes Beach

Situated on the northern end of Santorini, Baxedes Beach is a quieter option during the busy summer months. Backed by steep cliffs, the location offers some afternoon shade. The beach consists of a mix of dark rocks, pebbles, and coarse sand, which can often be pounded by sizable waves. It’s not particularly family-friendly; instead, it provides a space to escape the common crowds and soak up the sun. Nearby is Paradisos Beach, which is similarly serene. Few services exist at both beaches, so plan accordingly.

7. Vlihada Beach

A great option for groups with varying interests, Vlihada Beach (Vlychada) has been gaining popularity yearly. This long stretch features coarse dark sand interspersed with small rocks. With an abundance of tavernas and bars, loungers are readily available for rent. The sheltered beach typically offers easy swimming conditions.

In addition to snorkeling and diving, explore the beach on foot while taking in the bizarre sandstone rock formations. You can also visit the old cannery near the beach, which has been transformed into the Tomato Industrial Museum, showcasing Santorini’s agricultural history.

8. Perissa Beach

Perissa Beach, which transitions into Perivolos Beach and then Agios Georgios Beach as you head south, offers a long stretch of grey sand with a growing upscale vibe. As you move south, the sand becomes finer and various accommodations become available. This lengthy beach is ideal if you prefer to stay right on the beach instead of amidst the lively ambiance of Fira. Moreover, Perissa features a beach bar known for hosting live music and DJ sets throughout the summer nights.

With a diverse selection of beach clubs, tavernas, hotels, and apartments, there is something for every taste and budget. A long, tree-shaded promenade allows for lovely strolls along the more than 2 miles (3km) of shoreline.

Getting There: All three beaches have excellent access from parking areas, with regular buses connecting from Fira.
