San Luis Obispo County extends from Ragged Point north of Hearst Castle down the coast to the Guadalupe Dunes south of Pismo Beach. Part of the coastline is off-limits, occupied by the Diablo Canyon nuclear-generating plant (which is being decommissioned). Piedras Blancas Beach

The only sunbathers you’ll typically find at Piedras Blancas north of Hearst Castle are elephant seals. They give birth, raise their pups, and mate here. The young males even learn to fight on the beach. The rookery is open for public viewing, accessible via a flat, level boardwalk just a short walk from the parking lot.

Moonstone Beach, Cambria

Moonstone Beach in Cambria is well-known for its cozy hotels lining the nearby road. This beach offers a little bit of everything: an easy clifftop boardwalk that is accessible by wheelchair or ECV, intriguing tide pools, surfing opportunities, crashing waves, and golden-hued cliffs above the rocks. Moreover, there is a restaurant right across the road with a spacious outdoor deck, making it an ideal spot to relax after a beach day.

Cayucos State Beach

Cayucos is a small, vibrant town that is popular among locals. The beach itself is right in the heart of the town: wide, sandy, and fairly flat, with a picturesque pier positioned in the center. This beach is a fantastic choice for sand play, and lifeguards are on duty during the summer months. Additionally, there are outdoor showers available for convenience after a day in the sand. The town offers numerous dining and drinking options just a block or two away.

Coleman Park, Morro Bay

To reach this diverse beach area, follow Embarcadero Road through Morro Bay toward Morro Rock, or catch the trolley. Here you’ll find a skateboard park and a small playground for the kids, along with excellent fishing and opportunities to spot sea otters off the rocky shoreline. Additionally, a lovely sandy beach is situated nearby for surfing or enjoying sand activities.

Montana de Oro

This stunning park, located just north of Morro Bay, is a favorite for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. Spooner’s Cove, the park’s best beach, is located directly across from the campground. It offers a perfect opportunity to enjoy the rugged coastline, although the beach can be a bit challenging for bare feet.

Oceano Dunes Beach

The sand dunes adjacent to Pismo Beach at Oceano Dunes are an exciting destination for outdoor enthusiasts. This unique location is the only place in California where you can drive your RV or travel trailer onto the sand. Camping here is an experience like no other, with the opportunity to drive your car right onto the beach. You’ll also notice plenty of dune buggies in action, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
