Is one or two days enough to visit Santorini?
One day in Santorini is truly not enough. Two days may cover some highlights, but to fully appreciate what this captivating destination offers, we recommend at least three nights. This way, you can explore the highlights of Oia, Fira, and partake in unique experiences such as wine tours and sunset cruises.
How to Get to Santorini
You can either fly into Santorini’s airport or take a ferry from the mainland. Daily flights depart from Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos), taking about 40 minutes to reach the island. Once on the island, taxis are available for transport to various hotels.
Ferries run regularly to Santorini from Piraeus in Athens and are also connected to other Greek islands. For our trip, we flew into Santorini from Athens and continued on to Crete by ferry.
Getting Around Santorini
Driving around Santorini is an efficient way to explore hidden villages away from the busier areas. Additionally, the island offers a public bus network servicing most major villages. However, travelers outside of Fira may find schedules restrictive, especially when heading to the east coast.
During peak season, the buses can become quite full, shared with both locals and fellow tourists. If your itinerary includes extensive exploration, renting a car is highly recommended to make the most of your trip.
Best Time to Visit Santorini
The summer months attract the highest volume of tourists, which can make for great weather but also crowded conditions due to cruise ship arrivals. If you’re staying in a luxury or boutique hotel with a private pool, however, you may find the crowds less bothersome, as you can choose to relax at the pool bar.
For the best beach experience, aim for June through September. For fewer crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of September and October or April and May. We found our October visit particularly pleasant, with warm weather still in abundance.
