Top 5 Domestic Airlines for Quick Travel in Peru

Introduction to Domestic Airlines in Peru

Peru’s domestic airlines provide a quick, easy, and relatively inexpensive way to get around the country. The flight network is broad, with airports located in most major cities, and while bus travel in Peru may be a cheaper option, flying saves a tremendous amount of time.

New Peruvian airlines appear regularly; however, many fail to make a significant impression and soon disappear. The following airlines, all of which fly out of Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, are the five most established operators in Peru.

From Avianca, the oldest airline in the country, to the relatively new Peruvian Airlines, you can find reliable options to save yourself time while traveling across Peru and the rest of South America.

StarPerú, founded in 1997, initially served as a cargo operator and charter flight service but became a fully-fledged passenger airline in 2004. Since then, it has grown into one of Peru’s major domestic operators. Although not as large or sophisticated as LAN and TACA, StarPerú offers lower prices, making it a viable option for major destinations in Peru.

StarPerú flies to several destinations including Andahuaylas, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Chiclayo, Cusco, Huánuco, Iquitos, Jauja, Juliaca, Lima, Pucallpa, Puerto Maldonado, Talara, Tarapoto, and Trujillo.

LATAM Airlines entered the Peruvian market in 1999 and quickly became a major player, carrying a significant percentage of domestic passengers. This airline boasts a modern fleet of Airbus A319s and Boeing 767s, serving all major airports in Peru as well as destinations in South, Central, and North America.

Despite its success, LATAM Airlines has faced criticism for introducing an additional charge for non-residents. Consequently, if you are considering a flight with LATAM, it is essential to check for this additional fee beforehand and explore potentially cheaper alternatives with rival airlines.

Avianca (TACA Airlines), founded in 1931, serves 50 destinations across 22 countries in the Americas. Although its operations in Peru are mainly limited to a few key cities such as Arequipa, Cusco, Chiclayo, Juliaca, Lima, Piura, Tarapoto, and Trujillo, the airline looks set to expand its reach within the country.

As with LATAM, it is advisable to be cautious about potential additional fees for non-residents, especially on promotional offers, which can sometimes result in unexpected charges at the airport.

Peruvian Airlines, launched in 2009, represents one of the newest entrants to the aviation market in Peru. Initially focused on a limited set of destinations such as Lima, Arequipa, Cusco, Iquitos, and Tacna, the airline aims for further expansion.

In 2011, Peruvian Airlines faced challenges when its fleet was grounded for safety reviews. Although it quickly rebounded, this incident highlighted the importance of ongoing safety diligence in the aviation sector.

LC Perú, previously known as LC Busre, began its operations in 1993 as a cargo transportation service before entering the passenger market in 2001. It offers scheduled flights primarily from Lima to Andahuaylas, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Huánuco, Huaraz, and Tingo Maria, in addition to charter services.

The airline features a modest fleet of 19-seater Fairchild Metroliner aircraft. While these planes may appear smaller than expected, they effectively meet the travel needs across their designated routes.
