Having grown up here and now residing in Sacramento, I’m constantly looking for the places to visit locally.

When I think about what makes Northern California so special, the diversity in scenery comes to mind. With plentiful opportunities to be immersed in nature, there is truly something for everyone who visits. Whether you’re looking to discover a less-frequented national park, escape to the rugged coastline along the Pacific Ocean, or enjoy some California wine tastings, you can truly do it all. The best part? You could easily have an unforgettable experience in just a single week trip in Northern California.
It is with great pleasure to share these 7 epic places to visit in Northern California. A few are those “off-the-beaten-path” gems that may require a longer drive, but are ever so worth the effort. And then there are those that you simply cannot miss.
1. Lassen Volcanic National Park
When it comes to national parks in California, there are nine epic destinations to choose from. Lassen Volcanic National Park is often underrated, yet it offers a stunning variety of landscapes from hydrothermal areas to volcanic peaks.
You can explore Bumpass Hell, where you’ll see pots of mud boiling and turquoise geothermal waters steaming into the cold air. In the distance, Lassen Volcano towers prominently. With 150 miles of hiking trails, it’s an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors away from the crowds.
2. Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
This northern gem is renowned for its towering redwoods, and there’s so much more to discover here. One highlight is Fern Canyon, recognized from Jurassic Park, where 50-foot-high walls are draped in ferns, and water cascades into the creek below. Walking into the canyon feels like stepping into another world—one not to be missed.
Be sure to wear appropriate hiking shoes that can handle moisture, and don’t forget your camera to capture this extraordinary sight.
3. Mendocino
With a breathtaking coastline stretched across Northern California, Mendocino stands out as a personal favorite. This charming town boasts artistic flair, unique boutiques, and a variety of outdoor activities.
For those who love the great outdoors, the coastal hiking trails in Van Damme State Park and Russian Gulch State Park offer stunning ocean views while winding through coastal cliffs.
4. Lake Tahoe
A must-visit destination, Lake Tahoe attracts visitors year-round regardless of the season. Nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains along the Nevada border, its crystal-clear waters are iconic.
In winter, enjoy skiing at popular resorts like Squaw Valley Resort or Northstar Resort. In summer, my favorite hiking trails, such as Eagle Rock Hiking Trail and Cascade Falls, provide incredible views of the region. To avoid weekend crowds, I highly recommend visiting during the week for a more tranquil experience.
5. Point Reyes National Seashore
Located near San Francisco, Point Reyes National Seashore is one of my top picks for a day trip. This area has a protected coastline and is home to the charming town of Point Reyes Station.
Take a leisurely travel day here to experience highlights such as the tule elk reserve, the renowned Cypress Tree Tunnel, and the annual grey whale migration. For hikers, there are 150 miles of trails to explore. If possible, extend your visit with an overnight trip for even more adventure.
6. Humboldt Redwoods State Park
Another impressive destination to witness redwoods is Humboldt Redwoods State Park. The “Avenue of the Giants” is a scenic 31-mile road through some of the tallest trees on Earth. I always recommend this route, allowing ample opportunity to explore and take in the sights.
As you drive along the avenue, you can stop for scenic overlooks and enjoy guided trails leading to private areas amidst the redwood forest—perfect for a picnic or even camping for those wishing to delve deeper into this natural wonder.
7. Sierra Buttes
An underrated gem, the Sierra Buttes near Graeagle is a playground for adventure seekers. With craggy peaks and hidden lakes, this area beckons outdoor enthusiasts. One personal favorite is the Sardine Lakes, reminiscent of the Dolomites with their stunning greenish-blue color. Enjoy options for cabin rentals, boating, fishing, and abundant hiking trails that provide breathtaking views.
