Explore Brisbane’s Vibrant Craft Beer Scene
It took some time to convince the world that most Australians had never even tasted Foster’s Lager, famously promoted by Crocodile Dundee star Paul Hogan as ‘Australian for beer’ in the 1980s. The long-held view that XXXX (pronounced four ex) lager is synonymous with Queensland beer has proven more difficult to shake; however, the state’s capital boasts one of the most vibrant craft beer scenes in the country.
“Brisbane’s craft beer scene has just exploded during the past few years. If you look at the results of top beer competitions, Queensland beers have been doing incredibly well,” says craft beer expert Joslyn Erickson, co-founder of Hop On Brewery Tours in southeast Queensland.
With more than 20 craft breweries to visit, Brisbane is indeed the heartland of Queensland’s craft beer scene. While Hop On’s Brisbane tours offer an excellent deep-dive with exclusive access and tastings, it’s easy to stage your own inner-city brewery crawl on foot, with a little help from public transport. Here’s a look at all the best craft breweries within two train stops of Central Station.
Best for a Taste of Brisbane History: Newstead Brewing Co, Newstead
Discover the fascinating stories behind every beer at this industrial-styled brewery located in a former 1940s bus depot. Notable brews include the Mayne Thing Golden Lager, named after a notorious colonial butcher, and the Two to the Valley IPA, which captures a unique WWII-era expression from Brisbane. The raised bar area overlooks the brewing tanks, allowing visitors to watch the brewers at work while enjoying a tasting paddle.
Best for a Cosy Drink: Aether Brewing, Milton
Nestled under the shadow of XXXX Brewery, Aether Brewing may be small, but it shines with inventive limited-release brews such as the Dryad Pét-Nat, a refreshing wine-beer hybrid, and the rich Creature of the Night Peanut Butter Stout. As demand grows, Aether is set to open a second location in Northgate soon.
Best for a Big Night: Sea Legs Brewing Co, Kangaroo Point
Opened in late 2018, this spacious brewery next to the Story Bridge offers a wide range of craft beers, from light lagers to hop-heavy IPAs. With cocktails and an extensive wine list, it’s perfect for a night out with friends, catering to every taste—whether they prefer craft beers or standard selections.
Best for Local Character: The Catchment, West End
A refreshing diversion from the industrial-style spaces, this hip small brewery in South Brisbane features exposed brick walls and colorful murals. Guests can enjoy the brewery’s core offerings, including a bright ale, pale ale, and an IPA, alongside seasonal releases, making it an inviting spot for dinner.
Best for Craft Beer Nerds: Range Brewing, Newstead
Range Brewing stands out by offering only experimental brews instead of a core range. Visitors can sample unique flavors like peach sour ales and cookie dough marshmallow imperial stouts. Each visit promises a different experience, ensuring no two tastings are alike.
Best for a Warm-up Beer: Soapbox Beer, Fortitude Valley
The first brewpub in Brisbane’s entertainment district, Soapbox Beer is a fantastic place to kickstart your evening. With five core beers and a selection of rotationals, plus a food menu including beer-brined chicken wings, it’s a must-visit before catching a show nearby.
Best for Taking Visitors from Out of Town: Felons Brewing Co, City
Located beneath the Story Bridge in Howard Smith Wharves, Felons Brewing Co offers stunning views and a variety of easy-drinking craft beers. Named after historical convicts, this brewery is ideal for sharing wood-fired pizzas while enjoying the Brisbane River’s ambiance.
Best for Food Truck Eats: Green Beacon, Teneriffe
Despite its sale to Japanese beer giant Asahi, Green Beacon continues to be a local favorite in an industrial setting. Famous for fruity beers like the 7 Bells Passionfruit Gose, it’s complemented by a rotation of food trucks offering delicious eats, and it’s dog-friendly too.
Best for Kicking Back in a Beer Garden: Brisbane Brewing Co, West End
Established in 2005, Brisbane Brewing Co features up to 10 brews on tap, best enjoyed in its charming alleyway beer garden. The menu showcases sharing options that make it an excellent spot for groups looking to enjoy good food and drinks together.
Best for Interstate Brews: Stone & Wood, Fortitude Valley
With much anticipation, the new location of Stone & Wood is set to open soon. Known for producing craft beers made for good, this expansion raises the question of whether its offerings can compete with Brisbane’s established favorites.
