Brunch in Copenhagen: A Culinary Adventure
Copenhagen is a city made for foodies, boasting an array of dining experiences that range from street food markets to Michelin-starred restaurants, all designed to tempt your taste buds. As a result, the city’s brunch scene is nothing short of spectacular, offering something for everyone.
Year-Round Brunch Culture
Copenhageners indulge in brunch every day of the week, making it easy to enjoy this glorious meal whenever the mood strikes. The only challenge is choosing from the fantastic range of brunch spots available. Here are some top brunch favourites in the Danish capital.
Wulff & Konstali
At Wulff & Konstali, you can build the brunch of your dreams by selecting five or seven items from an ever-changing seasonal menu. Enjoy freshly baked pastries, local meats and cheeses, soups, gourmet mini paninis, as well as an abundance of fruit and vegetable options. Don’t forget to try their ‘sweet choice’ for dessert, including a delicious heart-shaped waffle served with lemon zest cream and salted caramel.
The vibrant location in Nørrebro, characterized by gleaming robin’s-egg blue tiles and a pale wood interior, is the most central of three Wulff & Konstali branches, all serving brunch daily from 9 am to 3 pm.
Mad & Kaffe
Another must-visit is Mad & Kaffe, where you can create your own brunch experience with a tempting spread of fresh options. Choose three, five, or seven items from dishes like blood orange with tarragon sugar, pork sausage with tomato and chives, and rich dark chocolate brownies topped with berries and caramel.
The name Mad & Kaffe translates to ‘food and coffee’, and they use organic espresso beans from Copenhagen Coffee Lab. If you’re looking for something refreshing, opt for a fresh juice, homemade lemonade, or iced tea. The original location in Vesterbro features an outdoor seating area perfect for enjoying the lively neighbourhood vibe during warmer months.
Café Norden
An exquisite two-level café located in a historic building on the Strøget pedestrian street, Café Norden is a great pit stop for brunch before indulging in some retail therapy. Their filling brunch plate features a variety of breads with cheeses and homemade jams, fruits, smoked salmon, and a choice of a wild-card item such as pancakes, eggs and bacon, or avocado. Additionally, the plate includes both a hot and cold drink along with a generous slice of cake of the day. If you’re not up for the full plate, a la carte brunch items are also available.
Møller Kaffe & Køkken
Nørrebro’s Møller Kaffe & Køkken is a brunch paradise where all-day dining offers a homey yet vibrant atmosphere. Here, diners revel in small dishes crafted from local organic ingredients. The establishment takes pride in its in-house specialties, including sausages, burrata cheese, rich chocolate-hazelnut spread, and mouthwatering panko-breaded chicken nuggets, all complemented by their renowned fresh sourdough bread.
Moreover, drink offerings at Møller are just as impressive, featuring homemade lemonade, kombucha, and their own herbal soda named Essence.
Union Kitchen
Nestled in a quiet street behind the iconic Nyhavn area, Union Kitchen is a trendy brunch spot favored by locals. It opens bright and early at 7:30 am (8 am on weekends) and serves brunch until 4 pm. Choose from regular and vegetarian brunch plates, or delight in lighter options like granola bowls and avocado toast, or hearty selections such as fried chicken and waffles and the unique ‘Hangover Cheeseburger’, which is paired with truffle fries. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy one of their famous Bloody Marys with bacon while soaking up the sun on pleasant days.
Hyggestund
At Hyggestund, you’ll find a cozy spot featuring eclectic decor and an inviting patio, living up to the hygge spirit—the quintessential Danish concept of coziness. As a member of the Mikkeller craft brewery family, it serves all-day breakfast dishes reminiscent of an American diner. Known as the perfect hangover cure, you can enjoy homemade donuts, fried chicken, soft buns loaded with bacon and eggs, and refreshing Beer Geek of the Day to wash it all down.
Grød
While not exclusively a brunch place, Grød satisfies cravings with its all-day porridge menu (available until 5 pm). This local chain offers cozy locations in each of Copenhagen’s central neighborhoods and elevates humble grains to a delicious new level. Enjoy a bowl of flavor-packed oatmeal, chia or granola creations, or customize your own bowl with exciting toppings such as sea buckthorn compote, Icelandic yogurt, and cacao nibs.
