One of the most enjoyable aspects of a city trip is the opportunity to stay in an exquisite boutique hotel. A location where careful attention has been given to the interior design, the service is exemplary, and guests are treated to a delightful breakfast each morning.
In recent years, I have been indulging in more weekend escapes within my home country, the Netherlands. Given my appreciation for boutique hotels, I frequently allow the choice of destination to be influenced by the hotel I wish to experience. Consequently, I have compiled an expanding list of the finest boutique hotels in the Netherlands, which serves as perfect inspiration for a city trip or weekend retreat.
While there are numerous hotels offering excellent accommodations, my focus is solely on those boutique establishments in the Netherlands where I have personally stayed and can sincerely endorse.
Deventer is a delightful city for a weekend escape. Staying at Finch Boutique Hotel significantly enhances the overall experience. If you arrive by train, the hotel is conveniently located just a five-minute walk from the station, right in the heart of the city.
Finch occupies a historic corner building, providing it with an appealing aesthetic due to its expansive windows. Inside, it features a remarkably stylish boutique atmosphere.
The rooms are tastefully furnished in a luxurious and modern style, complete with unique features such as a record player that begins to play music upon entering. Guests can find additional vinyl records available for a personal mini-party experience.
Finch offers 31 rooms across eight distinct categories, ranging from a small boutique to an expansive two-bedroom suite. During my stay, I occupied the Boutique+ room. While there is no restaurant, a cozy lounge bar is available, offering drinks, brunch, and delicious snacks throughout the day. This is also where the fresh breakfast is served.
Plantage Rococo stands out as perhaps the most photogenic boutique hotel featured in this collection. Although positioned amidst the Randstad, one can leave the city’s hustle and bustle behind upon arriving at this 18th-century estate.
This hotel, situated in a stunning mansion, features 11 rooms and suites. During my visit with my sister, we opted for the Family Suite, which provided us with separate bedrooms—a significant advantage! The hotel boasts all modern amenities; however, due to its historical nature and wooden flooring, some noise may be present.
While Haarlem and Amsterdam are within close proximity, guests can also enjoy a delightful meal at the charming hotel restaurant. Rest assured, once you check in, you will likely wish to prolong your stay.
Den Bosch is another excellent city choice for a weekend retreat in the Netherlands. If you appreciate Scandinavian and industrial design, you will undoubtedly enjoy The Duke Hotel. With 17 rooms and suites, it is genuinely a boutique establishment.
Although it may not be extensive, there is a ‘living room’ adjacent to the reception where breakfast is served in the morning, and snacks and beverages can be obtained throughout the day. However, as The Duke is ideally situated in the city center, surrounded by delightful café terraces and restaurants, I encourage you to dine out. During my visit, I stayed in the Deluxe Room, which offers a view of the vibrant shopping street and the renowned Sint-Jans Cathedral.
The accolade for the most original accommodation goes to Villa Augustus in Dordrecht. Following a coffee break during a day trip to Dordrecht, I was inspired to return for an overnight stay.
Furthermore, these are not your typical hotel rooms. At Villa Augustus, guests have the unique opportunity to occupy a room within a former water tower. Our accommodation preserves the original iron floor (where water was once stored), while the high windows provide a stunning view of the Wantij river. The private bathroom is located on a lower level, accessible via a staircase. Each room is uniquely decorated, imbuing a homely atmosphere, albeit with a less polished and luxurious appearance.
For breakfast, guests can stroll through the picturesque (vegetable) garden leading to the former pump house, which houses the restaurant and reception. Evening dining options are also available, featuring produce harvested from their own garden. While I found the dinner experience somewhat underwhelming, overall, my stay at Villa Augustus was genuinely enjoyable.
If you are seeking a luxurious boutique hotel set in nature, consider Boutique Hotel Beekhuizen in Velp. This intimate hotel is situated within the Veluwezoom National Park and serves as a true haven of tranquility. During my stay, I occupied the Suite, which allowed for direct access to the forest from my private terrace. For additional insights regarding Boutique Hotel Beekhuizen, I composed a comprehensive review of my experience.
Another picturesque destination in the Netherlands, ideal for those who favor nature over urban environments, is Mooirivier in Dalfsen. The hotel is positioned alongside the river Vecht, providing a stunning view from the expansive terrace, perfect for unwinding.
We lodged in a Superior Room for a few nights, which encompassed all the essentials but presented a somewhat conventional appearance. Although the room itself may not be its focal point, the surrounding environment makes it an excellent locale for a brief stay. I recommend renting a bicycle from the hotel to explore the region during the day. Do not miss the chance to dine at the hotel’s restaurant, Aan de Oever, where we enjoyed a delightful dinner.
Comprising over 200 rooms, this hotel in The Hague may not strictly fit the definition of a ‘boutique’ establishment. Nevertheless, after a delightful experience in this former bank building, I feel compelled to share it with you if you seek a fine, luxurious hotel in The Hague.
Voco The Hague is ideally situated in the city center, opposite the Binnenhof and Hofvijver, adjacent to the Plaats square with attractive café terraces, and in proximity to numerous shops and restaurants. The art deco building dates back over a century; however, the interiors have been modernized, featuring beautiful rooms (I stayed in the Premium Room). A noteworthy feature is the opportunity to enjoy a cocktail in the old bank vault of the hotel bar, Ultramarijn.
For a luxurious five-star experience in the southern Netherlands, consider Kruisherenhotel in Maastricht. Once a 15th-century Gothic church and monastery, it has been transformed into a stunning design hotel. The bar and restaurant, Spencer’s, are located within the church, while guest accommodations are situated in the former monastery. To learn more about my experience, I wrote a detailed review of my stay.
Another commendable option in Maastricht—more budget-conscious than the Kruisherenhotel—is Townhouse Design Hotel. Located less than a five-minute walk from the train station, it is ideal for those arriving via public transport, as well as being close to various charming restaurants and coffee shops in the cozy Wyck district.
At Townhouse Design Hotel, every effort is made to ensure guests feel welcomed, from a warm cup of soup offered upon check-in to the option of having a goldfish in your room for companionship. Naturally, you will always find a fresh slice of Limburg pie awaiting you in the inviting Living Room. While the rooms themselves may not be particularly spacious, they are uniquely and cozily adorned with supremely comfortable beds. For greater space, modern Townhouse apartments are also available across the street.

If you prefer proximity to the city center of Maastricht, Mabi City Centre Hotel offers a wonderful retreat. Notably, it is located in a former cinema building, allowing guests to enjoy a private cinema experience during their stay. Don’t forget the popcorn! While most of the rooms are relatively compact, they are tastefully furnished and equipped with modern conveniences.
One of the hotel’s highlights is Bar Twisted, where guests can enjoy a complimentary glass of wine between 4:58 PM and 6:03 PM before heading back into the city for dinner.
I will consistently update this article to include more boutique hotels in the Netherlands each time I discover one worth recommending. Should you have a suggestion for an exceptional (design) boutique hotel that you believe I would appreciate, please share it with me!
