Top Islands in Australia, New Zealand & South Pacific – Reader Favorites 2025

Head southwest past Hawaii, stop just short of New Zealand, and if you’re very lucky you will find yourself in the Cook Islands, a 15-isle volcanic atoll in the South Pacific. With jungles for hiking and a seascape for pondering how many shades of blue you can name, it is little wonder the Cooks rank high on the list of the top five islands in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific. Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, GoTravelDaily asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value. This year’s winner is the New Zealand island of Waiheke, praised by our readers for its “great bohemian, artistic vibe,” and “wine, sun, and great food, plus outdoor activities,” which make this not only a unique getaway but also a “must.” Located just a 40-minute ferry ride away from New Zealand’s North Island, Waiheke is that rare destination that seems to have it all: beaches, vineyards, great cuisine, and friendly locals. Three islands in French Polynesia also scored big with our readers, with Huahine, Bora-Bora, and Moorea (up from No. 3 on the list last year) all receiving top honors. The lush Huahine is revered for its lack of development and tourists compared with its more popular neighbor Bora-Bora, an atoll that continues to draw celebrities to its luxurious resorts with overwater bungalows. Moorea is surrounded by a blue lagoon that affords unparalleled diving and snorkeling; you can even feed reef sharks if that’s your idea of a good time. Hikes through the inland mountainous terrain are rewarded with a cooling shower under one of Moorea’s many waterfalls. Our advice when it comes to choosing between these places? Open an atlas to this area of the world, close your eyes, and lower your finger. Among these five destinations, one can only go right.

If you’re planning a New Zealand getaway, add this island — which is just a 40-minute ferry ride from Auckland — to your itinerary. Popular for both day trips and long-weekend getaways, Waiheke is home to many artists and craftspeople who are inspired by its natural beauty. Adventure lovers can zipline and hike the cliffs that shelter the 56 miles of coastline, while those who prefer something more low-key can explore galleries in the main town of Oneroa and indulge in wine tastings at local vineyards. All can agree on the beaches, which include romantic Cactus Bay, accessible only by boat. Raves one fan of the island, “Unmatched beauty on earth.”

Discover the Best Islands in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific

How many different shades of blue are there in nature? It’s a question you might contemplate as you gaze out at the seas surrounding the best islands in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific — where it’s all about leaving your cell phone behind and dialing in to the beauty in front of you.

Every year for the World’s Best Awards survey, GoTravelDaily asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

Most of this year’s favorites lay claim to dazzling beaches. A notable exception is Waiheke, New Zealand, which snagged the No. 3 spot thanks to its rugged beauty, stellar wineries and restaurants, and the ease with which it can be reached from the mainland (a quick 45-minute ferry ride from Auckland).

Other destinations on the list require more serious travel commitment, but the payoffs make the effort worthwhile. French Polynesia’s mountainous Mo’orea (No. 2) is frequently cited on this list thanks to its family-friendly culture, famous beaches, and incomparable diving on the Garden of Roses coral reef. Its neighbor, Huahine (No. 5), is less familiar but just as beautiful, with a white-sand coastline as glorious as they come. Stay in an overwater bungalow at the secluded Royal Huahine (formerly the Te Tiare Beach Resort), where you can snorkel off your porch. One reader dubbed the isle “Everything you expect a tropical paradise to be.”

1. Fiji Islands

Fiji’s two most populated islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, are well worth a visit. However, if you’re craving time away from it all, consider more secluded spots. They’re easy to find, given that 332 islands comprise Fiji, and only a third of them are inhabited. Namena Island, which has a marine reserve, is a top diving spot, while Beqa Island has one of the finest barrier reefs in the South Pacific, as well as excellent bird-watching. Few places in the world have more luxurious lodgings, evidenced by the new Malolo Island property from Six Senses — the company was voted this year’s best hotel brand — and the ultra-exclusive Vatuvara, a private-island resort where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spent their honeymoon.

Oceania and the South Pacific have long attracted travelers with their stunning landscapes. The islands are characterized by lush greenery and vibrant blue waters. How Voting Works

Every year, for the World’s Best Awards survey, GoTravelDaily invites readers to share their opinions on travel experiences worldwide. Participants showcase their views on top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, and more. This year, nearly 165,000 readers participated in the survey, marking a 25 percent increase compared to pre-pandemic participation. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties.

Islands were evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Natural attractions/beaches
  • Activities/sights
  • Restaurants/food
  • People/friendliness
  • Value

Respondents rated each characteristic as excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores represent the averages of these ratings.

What Readers Loved

As always, French Polynesia remains a favorite among GoTravelDaily readers, with three out of the five winning islands located in this exotic territory. Tahiti, an archipelago of 118 islands, retained its position at No. 5 from last year. A reader described it as the “most beautiful place in the world.”

Bora Bora, known as the pearl of the South Pacific, holds onto its No. 3 spot, with a voter stating it is “one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.” Moreover, Fiji ranked as the readers’ No. 2 favorite, not only for its breathtaking beauty but also for its welcoming people and rich culture. One voter remarked, “The world would be a much better place if everyone was as kind and gracious as the Fijians.” Another described it as “beautiful islands with lots of diversity, friendly individuals, and great value.”

However, despite the praises for these far-flung destinations, it was the renowned Great Barrier Reef—an iconic natural wonder off the coast of Queensland—that secured the top position as readers’ favorite islands in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific for 2023.

The Winner

Encompassing more than 900 islands, the Great Barrier Reef stands as the world’s largest coral reef system and is renowned for its vibrant marine life. A returning reader shared, “I’ve stayed on Hamilton Island twice, once in 1988 and again in 2019 before the pandemic. I would go back tomorrow if I could. I cannot imagine a better place to stay and to experience the Barrier Reef. There is so much to do, and the area’s natural beauty is unparalleled. I just love the island and the people of Australia.” In recent years, Australia has intensified its conservation efforts to protect the vulnerable reef, implementing various citizen science projects that allow eco-conscious visitors to contribute to preserving the ecosystem. Additionally, newly renovated resorts such as the InterContinental Hayman Island Resort and The House at Lizard Island enhance the appeal of this natural wonder.
