Despite being known for its towering skyscrapers and bustling business scene, Hong Kong Island is an island choice for escape. Within just thirty minutes, you can transition from the urban hustle of Central to relaxing on the sand.

Hong Kong features some stunning and often underrated beaches—expansive stretches of golden sand ideal for sunbathing amidst the humid climate. While the most picturesque beaches are found in the New Territories and other distant islands, Hong Kong Island offers several remarkable destinations for beach lovers.

The standout among these? Turtle Cove—it’s definitely worth the trek.

1. Weekend Waters: Repulse Bay Beach

As the most popular beach near Central, Repulse Bay Beach has a generous area of golden sand, perfect for sunbathers. However, keep in mind that the water quality can be questionable. Despite advisories, you’ll find many taking a dip.

Be prepared for crowds on weekends; arriving early is essential to secure your ideal spot. Above the beach, the famous building, once the Repulse Bay Hotel, now houses apartments, shops, and upscale eateries.

How to get there: Take either bus 6X or 250 from Exchange Square in Central—the quicker option is the 6X, taking about 30 minutes.

2. Secluded Sands: Turtle Cove

For the dedicated sun seeker, Turtle Cove in Tai Tam is arguably the best beach on Hong Kong Island. It features glorious golden sand, surrounded by serene greenery and a few palm trees for shade.

This beach remains relatively crowd-free compared to others, largely due to its hidden location. The on-site BBQ pits are a popular feature for those wanting to grill while enjoying the sun.

How to get there: Take bus 14 from Sai Wan Ho MTR station. Look for steep steps leading down to this hidden gem right after the Tai Tam Reservoir.

3. Seafront Fun: Stanley Beach

Stanley is home to Hong Kong’s best seaside town, complete with scenic promenades, alfresco dining, and refreshing drinks. It boasts two charming beaches.

Stanley Beach is a popular narrow stretch of sand closer to the community, equipped for various water sports and activities. For a quieter experience, consider St Stephen’s Beach, which is about a 15-minute walk away.

How to get there: Buses 6, 6A, 6Z, and 260 provide regular service from Exchange Square in Central, taking around 45 minutes to reach Stanley.

4. Big Waves for Big Kahunas: Big Wave Bay

Even though the name suggests otherwise, Big Wave Bay doesn’t display the towering waves found in Hawaii. Nevertheless, it’s a captivating spot worth visiting!

Situated a short walk from expansive Shek O Beach, Big Wave Bay is notably one of the better sandy areas on Hong Kong Island. Enclosed within a picturesque cove, it features cleaner waters which are inviting for a swim.

Nearby, Shek O village offers a charmingly rustic atmosphere, complete with laid-back restaurants frequented by a relaxed crowd. However, expect the beach to attract a wealthier clientele.

How to get there: Take the MTR to Shau Kei Wan station and then board bus 9 to Shek O. Disembark at the junction of Shek O and Big Wave Bay Roads, then walk approximately ten minutes to the seaside.

5. Absolutely Fabulous: Middle Bay Beach

Middle Bay Beach serves as the unofficial LGBT beach in Hong Kong. While it’s situated next to the bustling Repulse Bay Beach, it is slightly less accessible, offering a more secluded experience.

This difficulty of access helps keep the crowds at bay—perfect for those wanting to relax or simply observe the vibrant atmosphere.

How to get there: Take Bus 6, 6A, 6X, 66, or 260 from Exchange Square Bus Terminus to Repulse Bay. From there, a short walk south will lead you to Middle Bay Beach.
