Florida is a popular travel destination filled with diverse activities beyond its well-known theme parks. During my extensive time living here, I have compiled a list of unique attractions that I highly recommend to visitors:
1. Rainbow River
Often referred to as “KP Hole,” Rainbow River is a spring-fed river renowned for its clear blue water and tubing experience. Located in Dunnellon, Florida, this natural river stretches six miles, offering both motorized and non-motorized options for exploration. Most visitors prefer to float along its serene waters.
- Bring your own tube or rent one from various local companies along the river.
2. Fort Island Beach
When discussing Florida’s beaches, names like South Beach and Daytona Beach often come to mind. However, Fort Island Beach on the west coast is a hidden gem ideal for beach lovers seeking a more secluded experience. With beautiful white sand and crystalline waters, this beach offers a peaceful retreat away from the crowds.
- A designated swimming area is safe for children, and numerous rock pools invite exploration for crabs and fish.
3. Devils Den Spring
Florida is famous for its springs, yet Devils Den stands out for its unique underground setting. While descending the medieval stone stairs may seem daunting, the reward is a breathtaking and adventurous experience. This spring welcomes divers, snorkelers, and swimmers, providing a couple of hours of exploration.

4. Amphicars at Disney
Did you know that certain cars can drive on both land and water? You can experience this extraordinary adventure at Disney Springs in Orlando, Florida, where the public can ride in these unique “amphicars.” Reservations are required from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and each vehicle accommodates up to three guests.
The cost is $125 per car, with discounts available.

5. The Wonder House
No visit to Central Florida is complete without a glimpse of its historical marvels. The Wonder House, located in Bartow, Florida, was built by Conrad Schuck, a man of German descent. Despite rumors of espionage during World War II, the FBI cleared his name. This quirky house, once a local tourist spot, is filled with fascinating features and surprises.

6. The Mermaids of Weeki Wachee
If you love mermaids, you can find them at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, where live performances feature these magical characters. The mermaid shows, held three times daily, include captivating storytelling, dancing, and singing, with the opportunity for a meet and greet afterward!
7. Lakeridge Winery
Florida may not be the first place that comes to mind when discussing wineries, but Lakeridge Winery, complete with a vineyard, offers tours and complimentary wine tastings. Throughout the year, this winery hosts various events and festivals, such as:
- Wine and Cheese Festival
- BBQ and Blues Festival
- Seafood Festival
- Grape stomping events!
8. Westgate River Ranch Resort and Rodeo
Experience the thrill of a real rodeo every Saturday at Westgate River Ranch Resort. Tickets are affordably priced at $20 for adults and $10 for children, providing excellent value. The resort also offers a variety of activities for all ages, such as:
- Horseback riding
- Petting farm
- Archery range
- Golf course and more.
9. Cape Romano Dome House
Located near Marco Island, this intriguing dome house has a rich history and can only be accessed by water. Initially built by Bob Lee in 1980 as a vacation home, the structure suffered damage from hurricanes, yet it remains a notable landmark for visitors.

10. The Crystal River
Famous for its manatee population, the Crystal River is the only place in America where swimming with manatees is legal. Visitors can observe these gentle giants up close while following regulations to ensure their safety. Various watercraft options are available to enhance your experience.
