Being the financial capital of Switzerland, Zürich is filled with chic restaurants and a vibrant atmosphere, combining style and sophistication with fun and a laid-back vibe.
Best Things to do in Zürich
When you visit Zürich, we highly recommend purchasing a Zürich Card. This card provides unlimited public transportation throughout the city including tram, bus, train, boat, and cableway. You also benefit from reduced admission to museums and enjoy a mini lake cruise and river cruise. Additionally, the card offers 50% off an Old Town walking tour, making it a fantastic option for exploring the city.
Passes are available in various durations, starting from 24 CHF for 24 hours. We recommend spending at least three days in Zürich for a comprehensive experience.
1. Lindt Home Chocolate
It may sound cliché to visit a chocolate factory in Zürich; however, the Lindt Home of Chocolate is not your ordinary factory tour. This chocolate museum is a spectacular experience that should be at the top of your list when visiting Zürich.
Upon entering, you encounter a giant chocolate fountain in a massive hall. From there, enjoy a tour to learn about the history of chocolate while indulging in various chocolate samples.
The audio guide enhances the experience as you explore the evolution of chocolate. The highlight comes near the end, where you can sample different types of chocolate right from the fountains.
For more information on tours, check the Lindt Home of Chocolate Website. Tours start at 15 CHF per person, with unique experiences available such as making your own chocolate.
2. SUP on Lake Zürich
Spending a day on Lake Zürich is truly one of the best experiences. At Badi Enge, paddleboards are available to rent by the hour, giving you a fun way to enjoy the water on a hot summer day.
Paddleboarding allows you to see the city from a different perspective, and you can even glide into the Schanzenbraben Canal, where swans gracefully follow you through the calm waters.
Regardless of whether you want to paddleboard, don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy a boat ride on Lake Zürich, which is included in the Zürich Card. Take a moment to soak in the breathtaking city views from the water!
3. Seebad Enge
Zürich is known for its public baths, with six lake baths and five river baths available throughout the city. These spots provide a wonderful opportunity to relax in the sun while enjoying a refreshing swim in the clear waters.
Seebad Enge, easily accessible from the city center, offers a picturesque walkway along the lakefront, showcasing parks, views of the Swiss Alps, and cityscapes. It features mixed and women-only swimming areas, swimming lanes, a restaurant, and wooden sun decks.
During winter, Seebad Enge transforms into a sauna, offering a unique experience of relaxing while taking in views of the snow-capped Alps—a truly heavenly atmosphere.

4. Altstadt (Old Town)
Strolling through Zürich’s Old Town is one of the best activities to immerse yourself in the local culture; thus, enjoy an aperitif while doing some window shopping. The cobbled streets are lined with medieval buildings and charming bridges along the Limmat River, featuring countless galleries and shops selling tantalizing Swiss chocolate and delightful cheeses.
A favorite pastime here is to relax on one of the outdoor patios and engage in some people-watching. Zürich, one of the most expensive cities globally, provides fascinating views of high fashion and intriguing families walking by.
5. Walking Tours
A walking tour is arguably the best way to get acquainted with Zürich. With the Zürich Card, you can enjoy a 50% discount on walking tours while discovering various top attractions in a short amount of time. We particularly enjoyed our tour with a local guide named Barbara, who introduced us to hidden gems often overlooked by tourists.
Our tour began in the beautiful Rechberg Gardens, leading us through stunning medieval architecture to the University for marvelous views of the city, including top attractions like Kunsthaus and the famous Grossmünster.
6. Grossmünster (Great Minster)
Grossmünster stands tall as a significant landmark in Zürich, with its twin towers casting a majestic silhouette against the skyline. This historical church marks a pivotal location in the Reformation era within Switzerland. Be sure to climb the towers for stunning panoramic views of the city and visit the crypt to see the magnificent statue of Charlemagne.
7. Fraumünster
Fraumünster is another must-visit church in Zürich, renowned for its stunning stained glass windows designed by Marc Chagall and Augusto Giacometti. Founded in 853, this church initially served as a convent for aristocratic women from Europe.
The five stained glass windows created by Chagall were installed in 1970 and remain a highlight of this iconic landmark. Inside, you’ll also find an impressive pipe organ with 5793 pipes, making it a haven for art and music lovers alike.
8. Go Up Uetliberg Mountain
A surprising highlight of our visit was the excursion to Uetliberg Mountain for a breathtaking lookout over Zürich. Utilizing our Zürich Card, we easily navigated via bus, tram, and train, reaching this picturesque summit just 45 minutes from the city center.
The 10-minute walk from the station to the lookout tower rewards you with spectacular vistas of Zürich, Lake Zürich, and the majestic Swiss Alps. If time permits, this trip is a fantastic way to spend part of your day outside the city.
After savoring the views, you can dine at the restaurant on-site or continue your adventure by hiking for about two hours to the gondola for a scenic return. Climbing the tower costs 2 CHF (credit cards accepted) and is well worth the value.
9. Explore Zürich West
Zürich West stands out as the most trendy area in the city. Once a warehouse and factory district, it has evolved into a lively locale filled with stylish bars, cool cafes, and distinctive shops. Numerous art installations are scattered throughout the area, making it an enjoyable place to explore on foot.
Accessibility is straightforward via public transportation using the Zürich Card; within 10 minutes from the city center, you’ll find yourself in this vibrant neighborhood. As night falls, locals and tourists alike gather at bars to experience an energetic nightlife scene. Fun fact: Zürich has more bars per capita than any other city in Europe!

13. Wollishofen
Your Zürich adventure wouldn’t be complete without a boat tour on Lake Zürich. We took a delightful boat ride to the charming community of Wollishofen, utilizing our Zürich Card for the trip, which only took 15 minutes from the city center.
The main highlight here is the scenic walk along the Cassiopeia Boardwalk. Zürich has made great efforts to make its precious waterfront accessible to the public, ensuring everyone can enjoy the views and atmosphere.
14. Mönchhof am See
While exploring Wollishofen, take time to visit the artistic community, which is a vibrant neighborhood worth experiencing. Partnered with this is the area of Kilchberg, adorned with waterfront restaurants where you can enjoy picturesque scenery.
We dined at Mönchhof am See, owned by a notable restauranteur in Zürich. The menu featured delicious truffle fries, refreshing ginger shots, and a delightful burrata and tomato salad—truly scrumptious! The outdoor dining option enhances the experience even further, so consider making a reservation here.
15. Bahnhofstrasse
Bahnhofstrasse is one of the most exclusive shopping streets globally, stretching 1.4 km from the main train station. As you walk towards Lake Zürich, the shops transition into luxury brand boutiques featuring Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, and Rolex, encapsulating Zürich’s status as the heart of the Swiss banking system.
16. Lindenhof
Lindenhof offers a peaceful retreat in the city, overlooking Zürich from the historic Old City Walls. This site, reflecting a rich history, sits on a hill where remnants of a Roman medieval wall still stand. While it can be bustling during the day, the tranquility at sunrise is remarkable.
Originally the site of a Roman fortress, Lindenhof provides breathtaking views of the city and river. After your visit, don’t forget to stop by St. Peter’s Church, one of the four main churches in the historic center of the city.
17. Eat Fondue
Aiming to experience the delightful Swiss fondue and raclette during our time in Switzerland led us to discover one of the best fondue restaurants in Zürich — Swiss Chuchi located in the Altstadt.
Positioned in the heart of Niederdorf, this pedestrian-friendly plaza is brimming with hidden alleys offering an inviting atmosphere for dining. The exceptional melted fondue came accompanied by potatoes and fresh bread—a glorious combination!
Despite the summer heat reaching 30 degrees Celsius, we enjoyed a refreshing aperitivo with our fondue, and upon shyly admitting to our waiter that we were uncertain about ordering fondue in warm weather, he assured us, “It’s always a good time for fondue.” His statement seemed to hold true as many other tourists soon followed suit and joined us on the terrace to indulge in their own fondues! And don’t miss trying a Swiss hot chocolate while you’re there! Swiss Chuchi is conveniently located in the Hotel Adler, Zurich.
18. Fill up at the Many Fountains
While in Zürich, keep an eye out for over 1200 ornate fountains scattered throughout the city. These are not your typical drinking fountains; they are artistic masterpieces! You will often find children playing, runners rehydrating, and locals filling their water bottles at these stunning installations.
