Top Asian Destinations for Solo Female Travelers

As an Asian traveler, I can confidently say that this vast continent is home to some of the most extraordinary travel experiences, where modern infrastructure meets old-world charm. Traveling solo provides a unique opportunity to explore beyond your comfort zone, try new things, and forge lifelong friendships. Nevertheless, it’s essential to exercise common sense when exploring unfamiliar places, particularly as a woman traveling alone.

Throughout my travels across Asia, primarily focused on its rich culture and diverse food scene, I have consistently felt safe and welcomed by the local communities. Here are six Asian destinations I recommend for solo female travelers, along with two that are on my personal must-see list.

1. Luang Prabang, Laos

Although popular with tourists, Luang Prabang remains authentically Lao and a safe city to visit.

Having visited Luang Prabang several times, I’ve grown familiar with this UNESCO-listed town’s leisurely pace and formed connections with locals who invited me to enjoy BBQ evenings. One of the highlights of my solo trip was witnessing the breathtaking sunset over the Mekong River, which can be enjoyed on a boat tour or from a waterfront café.

The town is very tourist-friendly and the locals are friendly and approachable, making it easier to make new acquaintances. I felt completely comfortable walking alone in the old town, even at night. Biking, taking a tuk-tuk, or using a local taxi service to explore nearby villages are also safe options.

My favorite activities included swimming at the stunning Kuang Si Falls and hiking up to Mount Phou Si for a sunset view. Participating in a food tour with local chef Somsack Sengta at the morning market added to the experience, as did visiting the Lao Pottery House to witness traditional pottery-making.

2. Chiang Mai, Thailand

Engaging in local classes is a fun way to meet locals as well as other travelers.

Chiang Mai, nestled in northern Thailand, stands apart from the hustle and bustle of nearby Bangkok. This vibrant city offers a fusion of Buddhist temples, a lively coffee culture, and bustling food markets, all set within a backdrop of lush nature.

After exploring the ancient town, consider participating in a cooking class that typically includes a market tour. During the class, you can learn to prepare authentic Northern Thai dishes like khao soi while making new friends. Noteworthy experiences also include visiting the artistic Bang Kang Wat village and a sunrise hike up the Monk’s Trail to the stunning Wat Phra Doi Suthep.

3. Kerala, India

No matter where you go, India will bring memorable experiences, including traveling in Kerala.

Traveling in Kerala can be an overwhelming experience due to its large population, yet it turns out to be rewarding. Explorers often begin their journeys here, and after numerous visits, I can confirm the area’s amicable people and delectable cuisine, rich in fresh seafood and seasonal produce, make it a fantastic place to immerse in local culture.

Homestays with local families are the safest way to experience Kerala. Staying with locals guarantees a warmth of hospitality unlike any other. During my own stay, I cherished the beautiful backwaters and enjoyed culinary delights from meals prepared by my host family. Other activities include exploring historic sites like Fort Kochi and chasing waterfalls in the serene countryside. Dressing modestly while visiting is key to respecting local customs.

4. Bhutan

Experiencing local culture through homestays is ideal for solo women travelers.

Many solo female travelers reveal that Bhutan is often their first solo travel destination. The country mandates guides in most areas, ensuring safer and rewarding explorations of its splendid valleys marked by temples and vibrant prayer flags.

A highlight of visiting Bhutan is hiking to the iconic Tiger’s Nest, perched dramatically on a cliff. Don’t miss tranquil landscapes like Punakha Valley, where you can visit the unique Temple of Fertility. For an authentic experience, opt for a homestay where you can savor traditional dishes like ema datshi.

5. The Maldives

The Maldives offers more than luxury resorts: you can explore local culture and lifestyle.

While many perceive the Maldives as a mere honeymoon destination for resort travel, it’s quite versatile. I personally recommend splitting your time between a resort and local guesthouses for a complete experience. With 188 inhabited islands, numerous guesthouses offer budget-friendly accommodations.

Stay on an island like Dhigurah, known for its powdery beaches and whale sharks. Join local excursions, such as sunset fishing tours on a dhoni and cycling through the island to witness daily life. While local beaches are welcoming, modest attire is advisable when in public areas.

6. Singapore

Feast your way around Singapore, a city blessed with a confluence of food influences.

Often used merely as a stopover, Singapore is worth exploring for a few days. The city offers a wealth of activities, from savoring hawker food in Chinatown to visiting stunning Hindu temples in Little India. The efficient Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system makes getting around hassle-free and safe.

Enjoy shopping on Orchard Road, marvel at the Peranakan terrace houses, and catch the night light show at Gardens by the Bay—a must-see spectacle featuring illuminated architectural greenhouses. Consider budget-friendly hostel options to make the most of your stay.

Bucket List: Upcoming Travel Aspirations

Inspired by social media, I aspire to visit the captivating town of Jiufen in Taiwan next.

One of the places that has sparked my interest is Taiwan. After discovering charming videos of Jiufen, an enchanting old town with quaint tea houses and boutique shops, I can’t wait to indulge in its renowned culinary scene, scenic cycling routes, and vibrant night markets. Taiwan offers an efficient train system and a wealth of activities from Taipei to breathtaking spots like Taroko Gorge.

Exploring Uzbekistan

Samarkand’s iconic avenue of mausoleums is a must-see.

Lastly, Uzbekistan has emerged as a cultural hub, with its rich architecture, bustling bazaars, and a thriving arts scene. I have heard from fellow travelers about the warmth of the Uzbek people and their willingness to share meals, enhancing the cultural experience.

While in Uzbekistan, experience the vibrant markets of Tashkent and the stunning Registan Square in Samarkand, the heart of Timurid Renaissance. The historic Silk Road cities of Bukhara and Khiva are also on my travel itinerary, as is navigating the remarkable metro stations of Tashkent.

This article highlights places where solo female travelers can feel empowered, safe, and inspired throughout their journeys across Asia.
