My initial experiences in Morocco were enlightening. Although my companion had always desired to visit, my interest was not as strong. Ultimately, I acquiesced, and along with a few friends, we traveled to Morocco amidst my commitments and coursework from Cambridge University.
Upon arrival in Marrakech, which was vibrant with life, I was immediately captivated by the city! The rich amalgamation of sights, sounds, and scents can initially feel overwhelming but soon transitions into an exhilarating embrace of activities. As we veered away from the city’s vibrancy, we discovered the tranquil and breathtaking countryside. This stark contrast solidified my interest in exploring more of this remarkable country.
If you are familiar with Morocco, you will understand what I mean; if not, here are eight remarkable experiences you should not miss!
1.) Discover Moroccan history in its glorious cities
The cities of Morocco are characterized by their lively atmosphere and vibrant colors. Visiting a Moroccan city is an excellent opportunity to immerse oneself in its splendid and colorful history. Cities such as Marrakesh, Fes, Rabat, or Casablanca evoke imagery from the tales of 1,001 nights, bustling Medinas, and exquisite architecture!
2.) Relax on the beaches at the Atlantic coast
Morocco is renowned for its picturesque beaches and exceptional surfing opportunities. Whether your preference lies with Agadir, Tangier, or Taghazout—there exists an ideal spot to bask in the sun’s warmth. It is hard not to be enticed by these beautiful natural landscapes!
3.) Feel the country’s hidden heartbeat in the desert
A visit to Morocco would be incomplete without experiencing the Sahara Desert. An overnight excursion to spend the night in a traditional Berber tent is a must. The allure of the desert under a starry sky is undeniable, and it presents a wonderful opportunity for night photography if desired. In any case, this will undoubtedly be a memorable experience that will be recounted for years.
4.) Pack your trekking boots and head for the mountains
If feasible, ensure hiking is included in your Morocco itinerary. Venturing south to the Atlas Mountains can be invigorating for several days. The Rif Mountains in the north serve as an excellent alternative for outdoor adventures.
For those less inclined to hiking, participating in a guided tour can be an option, with potential opportunities to visit a Berber family on the excursion.
5.) Get the living daylight beaten out of you in a traditional hammam
Contrary to how it may sound, traditional public baths were essential for personal hygiene historically. Today, both locals and visitors enjoy the heated steam baths and vigorous massages, culminating in relaxation that can leave you feeling completely rejuvenated.
6.) Send your taste buds crazy with Moroccan cuisine
Tagine is the standout dish. This culinary delight is available in abundance. The tagines in Morocco are exceptionally noteworthy, typically filled with an array of vegetables, and I highly recommend sampling a lamb tagine during your visit. You will thank me later for the suggestion.
7.) Broaden your horizon in an Islamic country
Just as one visits temples in Asia or churches in Europe, exploring the stunning mosques and intricate arabesque architecture of Morocco is essential. It is vital to take the time to respect the cultural norms and guidelines while visiting these sacred spaces.
8.) Shop for almost everything under the sun in the souks
Notably, the diverse offerings in Morocco come at remarkably reasonable prices. Moreover, for items that are higher priced, haggling can lead to more favorable terms! Morocco has long been a paradise for travel bargain hunters, and this trend shows no sign of changing!
