Summary
The first I learned about Sintra occurred just prior to the summer break at Cambridge University.
This opportunity arose when a group of us planned to visit Lisbon for a four-day weekend to commemorate several birthdays, and a fellow student recommended a visit to Sintra.
Initially, I was somewhat hesitant. After all, this would be my inaugural trip to Lisbon, which undoubtedly boasts abundant attractions and activities. I presumed that my time would be insufficient to explore Lisbon thoroughly, let alone venture elsewhere.
As I delved deeper into the allure of Sintra, it became clear to me why it is imperative to experience this enchanting location in Portugal at the earliest opportunity.
Here are eight compelling reasons why a visit to Sintra should be prioritized.
1.) Castelo dos Mouros
This castle is a magnificent site and certainly warrants a visit when in the Sintra region.
It is utterly stunning and represents one of the more rustic and historic fortified structures in the area. Ensure you dedicate several hours to explore its surroundings.
2.) Palace of Pena
The Pena Palace is an architectural marvel reminiscent of a fairytale setting. Our visit was delightful, and it is conveniently located approximately thirty minutes from Lisbon.
It tends to become rather crowded; therefore, it is advisable to research the best visiting hours. If possible, seek to avoid the peak times to minimize waiting.
This area is truly enchanting.
3.) Pena Park
The forests within Pena Park resemble a setting straight from a fantasy novel.
We explored this park after visiting Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle.
5.) Quinta da Regaleira
This site features Quinta da Regaleira, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, extending across expansive grounds that are arguably among the most exquisite in the area for a leisurely afternoon.
The scenery is absolutely breathtaking.
6.) Initiation Well
The (ominously titled) Initiation Well is genuinely spectacular.
Again, it resembles an extraordinary stairwell, akin to those connected with royal residences.
7.) Sintra Village
These villages are incredibly picturesque and embody the quintessential Portuguese village experience.
8.) Monserrate Palace
Our visit to Monserrate Palace was truly memorable, particularly as a wedding event was taking place during our exploration.
Overall, we dedicated an entire day to exploring Sintra and would unequivocally recommend it as part of your itinerary while enjoying the essential experiences in Lisbon.
