Instead of relying solely on words to convey the allure of these locations, we present to you the seven must-visit attractions when you journey to the Phi Phi Islands, depicted in vibrant detail!
1.) Maya Bay
This stunning bay gained fame from the film “The Beach” featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Danny Boyle. Its enclosed beach is nothing short of breathtaking.
To reach this stunning spot, we had to disembark from our boats, swimming toward the rocky formations, grasping onto ropes, and navigating through a narrow cave entrance.
Accessing Maya Bay is typically less challenging during the dry season, yet this adventurous entryway contributed significantly to the overall experience.
Boats are unable to dock directly on the beach, resulting in an unobstructed view of the bay—an opportunity that’s not always available, particularly during peak travel periods.
During our visit, Maya Bay was accessible to the public, but it is currently rightfully restricted to allow for ecological recovery. Nevertheless, visitors can still approach the bay and admire the stunning views from the water.
2.) Pileh Lagoon
At this lagoon, one can immerse themselves in serene waters, swim, and engage in snorkeling activities. It is a delightful experience and indeed ranks among the top attractions in Phi Phi.
You’ll encounter a plethora of vibrant fish, and even from the boat, one can spot fascinating marine creatures (including several small flying fish).
It’s essential to remain cautious, however. The waters are relatively shallow and host various coral formations. A traveler we conversed with that evening shared how he had adjusted his snorkeling mask incorrectly and attempted to stand on a rock, only to mistakenly step on a sea urchin.
3.) Loh Samah Bay
This bay provides the entrance to Maya Bay, accessible through a rope system to traverse the rocky landscape onto the beach. It stands out as one of the premier experiences in Phi Phi for admirers of natural splendor.
This bay is also an ideal locale for docking your boat, basking in the sun, and perhaps even diving in for a refreshing swim.
4.) Viking Cave
This site is primarily observed from a distance, as direct access is restricted (or at least that is what we were informed). Local inhabitants harvest bird nests here for a prosperous ‘bird’s nest soup’ industry.
Although the cave itself is impressive to view, I must admit that I would likely avoid ordering bird’s nest soup if I encountered it on a menu.
5.) Monkey Beach
The name is quite straightforward; it is a prime location where one can observe and interact with monkeys.
The monkeys found here display a milder demeanor than many wild monkeys, yet one shouldn’t be stingy with food offerings.
They will chase after you for bits of bread or slices of watermelon if you’re too reluctant. Generally, they exhibit polite manners (strange yet true) and take food from your hands with care.
For those who appreciate these creatures, visiting Monkey Beach is undoubtedly among the top activities in Phi Phi; however, it may not be advisable for those who harbor a fear of monkeys. These curious creatures show no signs of apprehension!
6.) The Kho Phi Phi Don Town
Renowned for its numerous bargains, bars, and dining establishments, exploring the town offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the lifestyle of Phi Phi.
This experience diverges from merely marveling at the breathtaking natural vistas. Instead, it provides an avenue for spontaneous adventure.
To fully enjoy what the town has to offer, it is advisable to avoid over-scheduling your visit. Rather, allow yourself to wander the streets of Phi Phi, especially after a long day of exploration.
7.) Long Dalam Bay
This area serves as the main bay of Kho Phi Phi Don, making it an excellent location for daytime relaxation and evening festivities (or perhaps a few sophisticated cocktails) as night falls.
Consider enjoying dinner in town or at your accommodation before heading to Long Dalam Bay, which features an abundance of coconut cocktails and lively entertainment, including fire breathers and dancers.
