Summary
Our motivation for initiating GoTravelDaily stemmed from a desire to connect with enthusiasts who share our zeal for exploration. As such, it is always gratifying to learn about culinary or travel experiences from others.
Even after years of residing in London, I continue to be enthusiastic when someone mentions a restaurant, bar, or new attraction in the city that I have yet to experience.
Explore some of the delightful dishes to savor in Quebec, Canada, beyond just poutine (delicious though it may be).
1.) Bagel
This dish is a classic from Montreal! Ensure that you sample one of our bagels during your visit to our metropolis. The two primary bakeries in the city are St-Viateur Bagel and Fairmont Bagel.
A friendly rivalry persists between these two establishments regarding who produces the superior bagel. I avoid taking sides; instead, try them both and provide your opinion!
2.) Tourtière (Meat Pie)
This is not simply a dish, but also a cherished tradition.
This meat pie can be uncomplicated, crafted from ground pork and ground beef, or it can be more intricate, comprising layers of assorted meats and potato cubes. It is essential to enjoy this dish during our Christmas and New Year’s Eve festivities.
Each family boasts its own secret ingredients, and the recipe is traditionally handed down from grandmother to granddaughter through generations.
3.) Pâté Chinois (Shepherd’s Pie)
This dish is a staple for weekday meals in nearly every Quebecois household. The fundamental composition includes three layers: ground beef, corn, and mashed potatoes.
Contemporary restaurants often present more sophisticated variations, incorporating vegetables or cheese and altering the spices.
Surprisingly, this meal has no Chinese origins; the name originates from the thousands of Chinese laborers who constructed Canada’s two transcontinental railways. This dish offered an economical way to nourish a large group of people.
4.) Pouding Chômeur
Pouding chômeur is a delightful dessert consisting of vanilla cake baked in a syrup of maple or brown sugar. The batter is poured over a foundation of syrup and cooked directly within that layer.
This method results in a warm, soft cake, serving as perfect comfort food, particularly after a heavy snowstorm in January or after enjoying horseback riding at the sugar shack. It is essential to note that the maple syrup hails from Quebec, renowned for its superior quality.
The name arises from its affordability, having been created during the Great Depression.
5.) Blueberry Pie
In the region of Saguenay Lac St-Jean within Quebec, blueberries are so celebrated that they are used as the nickname for the locals! The optimal season for consumption generally spans from mid-July to the end of August.
Visitors to this area have the opportunity to pick the fruit themselves, allowing for the enjoyment of a significant number of berries while harvesting as well as provisions to take home. Delicious!
Of course, various blueberry products abound: jams, cakes, muffins, juices, and more. However, opting for the pie is recommended; this insight comes from a self-proclaimed blueberry specialist.
6.) Maple Syrup Everything
The culinary possibilities with maple syrup are truly endless: maple syrup flakes in salads, smoked salmon with maple syrup, maple syrup on pancakes, and maple syrup-based ice cream.
Let’s say you can include it in nearly any dish! Almost, but do keep in mind that I have a particular fondness for sweetness.
