Summary of Highlights:
Transporting Around the City
During our stay in Cape Town, we opted to rent a vehicle from our hotel for approximately £20 per day. This decision initiated our adventure on a positive note, as our hotel provided us with a brand new compact vehicle, which I had always aspired to drive. Being accustomed to driving on the left side of the road, I found it relatively straightforward to navigate the streets, highways, and intersections of South Africa.
It is advisable to join organized vineyard tours or private excursions if you plan to visit the local vineyards, particularly since the wines might entice you a bit too much.
What to See Around Cape Town
Explore the following activities while discovering the stunning coastline, Cape Peninsula, and Table Mountain National Park, which are all just outside the city limits.
1.) Ascend Table Mountain
Table Mountain is among South Africa’s most iconic natural wonders; its proximity to the city center allows easy access for visitors. We chose to ascend via the revolving cable car, ensuring every passenger enjoyed an unobstructed view at some point during the ascent. Alternatively, for those seeking an active experience, I recommend a four-hour hike; just be sure to start early to mitigate exposure to the midday sun and remember to stay hydrated.
For those less inclined to hike, you may consider abseiling down Table Mountain, presenting a thrilling experience and offering a unique perspective of the national park.
2.) Discover the Western Coast of Cape Peninsula
Venture south for approximately an hour to experience the rugged beauty of Cape Peninsula. We visited at sunset, witnessing an incredibly stunning twilight view that has left a lasting impression. The drive is picturesque and can be completed in roughly six hours, allowing time for ice cream breaks along the way.
3.) Whale Watching in Hermanus
Located approximately two to three hours from Cape Town, Hermanus is an inviting seaside destination just west of Walker’s Bay Nature Reserve. This charming town is particularly renowned for its whale sightings. Between August and November, numerous Southern Right Whales can be observed along the shore, creating a breathtaking spectacle for visitors.
4.) Visit the Charming Penguins
Boulders Beach, located in Simon’s Town about 50 minutes southeast of Cape Town, is renowned for its protected bay and sandy beaches where endangered African penguins have made their home. A modest fee of around £3 (4 Euros, $5 USD) grants access to this protected area, and it is well worth the visit. The funds generated from admissions have been used to construct wooden pathways that allow visitors to peacefully observe the penguin nesting areas, making for a delightful experience.
5.) Relax at Muizenberg Beach
Known for its pristine white sands and distinctive beach huts, Muizenberg is an ideal location for basking in the scenic views of the South African coastline. Many excellent dining options line the shore, adding to the allure of this beach experience.
6.) Experience a Vineyard Visit
On our return journey from Hermanus, we opted to stop by Creations Vineyard, which had received commendations. South Africa is celebrated for its wine regions, and we sought out a smaller, locally owned vineyard for an authentic experience. We sampled every wine available on their menu, resulting in quite an amusingly dizzy promenade back to Cape Town.
