  • World’s Best

GoTravelDaily readers select their favorite cities in the world through our annual “World’s Best Awards” survey for 2023.

How Voting Works

Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, GoTravelDaily asks readers to share their opinions on travel experiences globally, providing insights into the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. This year, nearly 165,000 GoTravelDaily readers completed the 2023 survey, marking a significant increase of almost 25% compared to pre-pandemic voting levels. More than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties including hotels, cities, and cruise lines.

Cities were specifically rated on the criteria listed below:

  • Sights/landmarks
  • Culture
  • Food
  • Friendliness
  • Shopping
  • Value

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores reflect averages of these responses.

What Readers Loved

Based on this year’s survey, it appears that Mexico stands out as a favorite among GoTravelDaily readers, with five Mexican cities ranking as the best in the world. Japan also made a strong showing with three winners, alongside Thailand, Italy, and Portugal, which each had two cities represented. The rankings saw movement in the top five compared to last year, with two European cities making room for No. 2 Udaipur, India, and No. 3 Kyoto, Japan. It is common to spot a European city in the top five, often Istanbul (No. 8 this year), or Florence, Italy (No. 12). However, this year’s top slots were claimed by Asian cities, signaling a notable return to travel in Japan and India.
