Spain is a remarkable country to navigate that extends beyond its scenic beaches or the Balearic Islands. While these attractions are undeniably stunning, Spain is an expansive country with an abundance of cultural experiences. Numerous locations in Spain are worth a visit, and you would undoubtedly miss many by merely focusing on the coastal regions.
Having traveled extensively throughout Spain, I felt it was appropriate to disclose my top destinations that are ideal for a quick holiday.
To showcase the country’s diversity, I will highlight several locations across Spain. Whether you are located in the north, south, east, or west, you will have the opportunity to explore these remarkable places.
With that perspective, I would like to present some of the prime locations in Spain worth visiting this year. Some of these spots may require a bit of travel while others could be accessed directly by flying into picturesque Spanish towns.
Regardless, my objective is to share some of my preferred locales that are memorable for travelers.
Explore some of the finest destinations in Spain that you should consider for your trip this year.
1.) Bilbao
Another favorite within the Basque Country is the city of Bilbao. Although commonly referred to as an ‘industrial port city’, Bilbao boasts a much richer narrative than its industrial heritage may suggest.
Upon arrival, ensure you visit the Guggenheim Museum, renowned for its stunning architecture and art collection (both inside and outside). Following that, partake in the txikiteo tradition, hopping between cozy bars in the old town to enjoy local wine and delectable pintxos.
If that does not appeal to you, consider visiting Market La Ribera (the oldest covered market in the area) or the Museum of Fine Arts, and do not miss the opportunity to ascend to Artxanda for some stunning views of the city.
Next, explore Castro Urdiales and its historic castle and Santa María de la Asunción, which are both located right on the waterfront.
To indulge in authentic local cuisine, venture into Santander to dine at Daria’s, where local flavors meet international culinary flair.
2.) Ronda
About a 90-minute drive inland from Malaga, Ronda is notable for its unique positioning over a plunging canyon that divides the city.
Legend has it, a historical dispute among residents led to divine intervention, resulting in a canyon that separated the two halves of Ronda. Over numerous years, they have united to construct a bridge that reconnects the town.
For an exhilarating experience, visit the Alhambra Palace, an architectural masterpiece from the Moorish period, which holds significant historical importance.
For fine dining, I highly recommend Nerua, which serves a remarkably exquisite menu, albeit at a higher price point.
3.) Barcelona
The competition between Barcelona and Madrid regarding which city reigns supreme continues to thrive. Personally, I am fond of both for different reasons. Barcelona, particularly, is an ideal city for a short break. Furthermore, there are numerous free attractions in Barcelona that offer excellent experiences without necessarily incurring high costs.
You certainly cannot visit Barcelona without touring the magnificent works of Gaudí. Additionally, if you time your visit accordingly, experiencing the annual La Merce festival will provide an exciting and vibrant glimpse into local culture.
