Due to its location, attractions and activities in Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, and Boca Raton are easily accessible from Margate.

Nearby, visitors can enjoy highly-rated golf courses, lush tropical environments, a remarkable indoor entertainment center, diverse shopping options, a public water park, and the home of MLS team Inter Miami.

In summary, if one were to characterize Margate in a single word, it would be ‘convenient,’ as residents and visitors find themselves with easy access to a multitude of resources.

1. Calypso Cove Aquatic Facility

Adjacent to Coconut Creek, the Fern Forest Nature Center boasts a diverse range of plant and animal species alongside its exhibits, boardwalk, and reptile house.

The center encompasses various trails, not all of which are wheelchair accessible; however, sections of the Cypress Creek Trail are suitable for wheelchair users.

The elevated boardwalk guides visitors through a remarkable variety of natural habitats, where swamp and wetland creatures such as alligators, snakes, and a multitude of bird species can often be observed.

Visitors during the summer months should bring water, mosquito repellent, and appropriate sun protection.

2. Fern Forest Nature Center

Located along Lyons Road in Coconut Creek, Fern Forest Nature Center features a vast array of plant and animal species as well as educational exhibits, a boardwalk, and a reptile house.

The center offers multiple trails, with some parts of the Cypress Creek Trail being accessible to wheelchair users.

The boardwalk leads guests through an impressive assortment of natural landscapes, allowing for sightings of swamp and wetland wildlife such as alligators, snakes, and various bird species.

If visiting during the summer, it is advisable to bring water, mosquito repellant, protective headgear, and sunglasses.

3. Butterfly World

Butterfly World in Coconut Creek is a long-established destination frequented by both locals and visitors.

The warm climate of Florida provides an ideal environment for diverse butterfly species, making this park an exceptional place to observe them collectively.

Though popular with families, adults can similarly enjoy insightful ecological exhibits around these magnificent insects at the Research Facility.

Moreover, the venue includes expansive open-air aviaries, showcasing hummingbirds, macaws, and the opportunity to interact with sociable lorikeets that may feed from your palm.

4. Oriole Golf Club

For over half a century, Oriole Golf Club has remained a cherished venue for budget-conscious golfers in Broward County while emphasizing quality.

Although the club operates semi-privately with possible member advantages during peak times, it offers a superior course at an affordable price.

This par 72 course accommodates golfers of various skill levels. I particularly appreciate the expansive fairways, allowing for a variety of strategic approach shots.

The greens present a challenge due to their size and undulations, complemented by various sand and water hazards, ensuring a stimulating yet enjoyable golfing experience.

5. Tradewinds Park and Stables

Spanning more than 600 acres, Tradewinds Park and Stables is arguably the most activity-rich facility in Broward County and has been operational since the 1970s.

The venue includes farm and equestrian features, offering guided educational tours, trail rides, pony rides, and children’s farming camps.

Additionally, on the third Saturday and Sunday of every month, a charming model steam train operates, delighting young visitors around the park.

The park also hosts the well-loved Butterfly World, which will be discussed further down. In addition, there are facilities for picnicking, playgrounds, and various sports amenities.

6. Firefighters Park

Firefighters Park represents an invaluable public facility for Margate, having undergone substantial renovations in recent years.

For those wishing to engage in physical activities, this venue offers five illuminated tennis courts, four pickleball courts, and two full-court basketball courts.

Notably, the playground is now equipped with a protective awning to shield children from the intense Florida sun, while the surface has been upgraded to astroturf instead of sand.

Moreover, adults seeking to maintain a fitness regimen on a budget can utilize the fitness trail, which spans half a mile and includes multiple exercise stations.

7. Coral Square Mall

While many enclosed malls are experiencing a decline, Coral Square Mall remains thriving, showing excellent health during my recent visit.

Inaugurated in 1984, this mall boasts over 120 tenants and impressive occupancy levels seldom seen in today’s retail environment.

National retailers such as JCPenney, Macy’s, Old Navy, Aéropostale, Victoria’s Secret, Kohl’s, American Eagle, Lids, Hot Topic, and Hollister are among the many options available.

One of the hallmarks of my visit was the food court, which was bustling with activity during lunchtime, featuring establishments like Sarku Japan, Sbarro, Charleys Cheesesteaks, Auntie Anne’s, and a location of Churromania, which is particularly appealing.

8. Xtreme Action Park

As a parent, I have encountered numerous family entertainment centers, yet none compare to the sheer scale of Xtreme Action Park.

This vast facility encompasses 200,000 square feet and is equipped with a plethora of attractions suitable for all age groups.

The park features a high-speed indoor karting track, boasting European-imported electric karts capable of reaching speeds up to 45 MPH.

Furthermore, there are six full-size bowling lanes, a roller rink, an XD dark ride, a high ropes course, laser tag, and VR gaming experiences.

The Evolution Escape Rooms offer an array of challenges characterized by exceptional detail and realism; I was particularly impressed by ‘Two Thirty Nine,’ immersing participants in a dystopian scenario reminiscent of ‘Squid Game.’

9. DRV PNK Stadium

During the summer when this article was penned, this sector of the Miami metropolitan area gained unprecedented attention.

Renowned soccer player Lionel Messi had recently joined Inter Miami, who hosts their games at DRV PNK Stadium, located near Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport.

Events at this 21,000-seat venue garnered significant interest, as the stadium opened in 2020 and serves as a temporary location until Inter Miami relocates to the anticipated Freedom Park Stadium, closer to downtown Miami.

As a relatively new franchise launched in 2018, Inter Miami is part-owned by David Beckham, a notable figure in the realm of Major League Soccer.

10. Monster Mini Golf

Ideal for inclement weather or excessively hot days, there is an indoor 18-hole mini golf course located nearby in Coral Springs.

True to the Monster Mini Golf theme, the course incorporates glow-in-the-dark elements and features striking artwork that doubles as obstacles and decor.

Guests are treated to an energetic soundtrack while playing, which amplifies the lively atmosphere, and might occasionally encounter animated creatures during their round.

In addition to golfing, the venue also includes a vibrant gaming arcade, a modern laser maze, and a VR room.

11. Children’s Science Explorium

Located in Boca Raton, Sugar Sand Park is an excellent choice for an affordable family outing. While several attractions are present, the standout feature is the Children’s Science Explorium.

This interactive venue offers a variety of exhibits and activities tailored for children up to 12 years of age, encouraging hands-on learning about the natural world.

During my most recent visit, my youngest was fascinated by the ‘Zoo in You’ exhibit, which illustrates the myriad of microbes residing on and within our bodies.

Additionally, evening telescope events, storytime, and regular science demonstrations are scheduled; thus, it is advantageous to review the program calendar prior to visiting.

12. FATVillage

Contrary to what its name might suggest, Fort Lauderdale’s FATVillage does not function as a weight loss center; rather, it serves as an artistic enclave for travelers and locals seeking inspiration.

Covering four city blocks, this area is teeming with artist studios, galleries, and coffee shops, fostering a thriving creative community.

With an abundance of dining and beverage options, even the most discerning of gastronomes will find satisfaction here.

My preferred time to visit FATVillage is during the monthly Artwalks, which take place on the last Saturday of every month from 6 PM to 10 PM.

13. Stonewall National Museum and Archives

In Fort Lauderdale, the Stonewall National Museum and Archives stands as one of the nation’s foremost archives dedicated to LGBTQ+ history and culture.

This non-profit institution houses significant historical artifacts and a range of memorable memorabilia.

I was captivated by the museum’s collection, which features artwork, flags, and clothing items previously worn by notable LGBTQ+ figures such as Ellen DeGeneres.

The museum’s library and archives are extensive, representing the most comprehensive collection of its kind. While admission is free, most visitors contribute a nominal donation to support this invaluable community resource.

14. Swap Shop

For those who enjoy drive-in movies and flea markets, a visit to Fort Lauderdale’s Swap Shop is a must.

Featuring thousands of vendors within a sprawling flea market and regularly scheduled movies at the drive-in theater, the experience offers a nostalgic trip back in time.

My children had never before attempted to watch a film from a vehicle, making it a wonderfully novel experience for them.

Entry fees are minimal, and numerous budget-friendly food choices are available. Guests are also welcome to bring their own food if they so desire.

15. Secret Woods Nature Center

Occupying nearly 60 acres in the heart of Broward County, the Secret Woods Nature Center serves as a tranquil oasis amidst urban surroundings.

On the trails winding through this area, visitors can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse themselves in an enchanting cypress swamp, mangrove ecosystem, and dry oak woodland.

The park offers two primary pathways: one elevated and another at ground level, and features a remarkable seasonal butterfly garden.

My fondest memory of Secret Woods Nature Center was observing a manatee from the observation deck adjacent to the river.

Importantly, both parking and entrance are free; however, visitors should bring water, comfortable footwear, and insect repellent.

As of my writing, the center was recovering from a recent flood.
