This charming city is located on the northeastern edge of Greater Orlando. One notable aspect of Oviedo is the abundant wilderness that exists to the north and east.
Within a short drive from downtown, visitors can embark on an airboat excursion through waters populated by alligators. Alternatively, one can explore trails that follow the remnants of a historic railroad through a lush tropical environment.
The town itself offers numerous activities. Oviedo features a traditional downtown area alongside a contemporary development situated a mile to the south, known as Oviedo on the Park.
This modern area, established in the 2010s, has contributed to the city’s population exceeding 20,000 according to the most recent census. It encompasses well-maintained parks, an array of art installations, entertainment venues, and a charming farmers’ market held twice a month.
1. Black Hammock Airboat Rides
Lake Jesup, located on Oviedo’s northern border, is recognized as one of the most alligator-populated bodies of water in Florida, with an estimated 13,000 alligators residing there at the time of writing.
Consequently, while swimming in the lake is ill-advised, I highly recommend participating in an airboat tour to observe the lake’s wildlife up close.
The Black Hammock operation, situated just five minutes from downtown Oviedo, operates four airboats that accommodate up to 12 passengers for exhilarating wildlife tours.
One highlighted stop on the tour is Bird Island, which serves as the largest colony of wading birds in Seminole County. Alligator sightings are guaranteed; in addition, visitors can expect to see numerous turtles and birds of prey such as bald eagles and ospreys.
2. Little Big Econ State Forest
One of the aspects I appreciate about Oviedo is that the wilderness begins right at the city’s periphery. Trailheads leading into the Little Big Econ State Forest can be found merely five minutes from downtown.
This state forest encompasses over 5,000 acres of unspoiled nature along the Econlockhatchee River and its tributary, the Little Econlockhatchee River.
Within this area, there are nearly 12 miles of walking trails, many of which are part of the Florida National Scenic Trail. For a scenic hike, the Flagler Trailhead along Lockwood Boulevard serves as an ideal starting point.
From here, hikers can traverse the route of the historical Kissimmee Valley Line, which was originally constructed by oil magnate Henry Flagler in the 1910s and subsequently abandoned in the 1940s.
Remnants of trestle pilings can still be seen along the riverbanks. The trail predominantly follows the bank of the Econlockhatchee River, guiding travelers through picturesque oak-palm hammocks.
3. Lukas Nursery and Butterfly Encounter
A fourth-generation family-owned business, Lukas Nursery traces its origins back to a truck farm established in 1912 by a Czechoslovakian couple.
Opened to the public in 1973, it has evolved to become one of the top 100 garden centers in the United States. The highlight of Lukas Nursery is the Butterfly Encounter, which has been in operation for over two decades.
Within a spacious 4,000-square-foot conservatory, visitors can observe a stunning variety of butterflies in flight. A feeding station is also available, allowing guests to provide nectar to these beautiful insects. Complementing this is a collection of buttonquail and an aviary featuring vibrant Australian Gouldian finches.
This captivating attraction is open year-round; however, the optimal time to visit is during the warmer months, from April through September, when butterflies are most active.
4. Cross Seminole Trail
Stretching across the region for 23 miles, the Cross Seminole Trail facilitates travel through Oviedo and connects to the northeastern suburbs of Greater Orlando.
The trail commences at the junction of Aloma and Howell Branch and extends all the way to Lake Mary. To the south, visitors can connect to the 6.5-mile Cady Way Trail, while to the north, the trail leads into the Seminole-Wekiva Trail, which spans 14 miles.
One aspect that excites me about the Cross Seminole Trail is that it utilizes the right-of-way of the historic Sanford and Indian River Railroad, which originated in the 1880s.
If you are looking to explore the nature found northwest of Oviedo, this trail provides access to the densely wooded swamplands of the Spring Hammock Preserve, where ancient bald cypress trees reside. The most notable is Lady Liberty, an impressive 89-foot tall tree that is approximately 2,000 years old.
5. Oviedo Farmers’ Market
On the first and third Saturdays of every month, a farmers’ market takes place on the grounds of the Oviedo Historical Society’s Lawton House.
This community-driven initiative is coordinated by volunteers from the historical society and retains a traditional feel that complements its historical setting.
During my visit, I counted at least 20 vendors showcasing local fresh produce, dairy products, honey, baked goods, houseplants, and delightful homemade sweets.
Unlike many farmers’ markets, this event is pet-friendly, with several vendors providing dog treats and toys.
6. Econ River Wilderness Area
If you prefer a more manageable natural setting within Oviedo, the Econ River Wilderness Area offers an accessible option.
Located on the Seminole/Orange County boundary, this area encompasses 240 acres of diverse ecosystems, including river swamps, sandhills, and pine flatwoods.
A three-mile network of trails will guide you to the banks of the Econ River on the eastern side of the property. I found the live oaks with their twisted branches, as well as the majestic bald cypress trees by the river, particularly enchanting.
During my midday visit, wildlife was somewhat scarce; however, I did spot numerous turtles and white-tailed deer in the surrounding woodlands.
7. Center Lake Park
As an anchor of the rapidly developing Oviedo on the Park project, Center Lake Park serves as a central feature in this bustling area.
The focal point of the park is, of course, the lake, which features a fountain and offers swan boat rentals along its shoreline.
A walking trail encircles the entire lake, making it perfect for evening strolls, especially when the fountain is illuminated at sunset. Various amenities are strategically placed along the promenade.
During my visit, I noticed a splash pad, a playground, a dog park, an outdoor chess area, wooden decks overlooking the water, and a modern amphitheater/cultural center.
As is common in Florida’s bodies of water, wildlife is plentiful. I observed ducks, turtles, a variety of fish, and a large heron hunting along the shoreline.
8. The Artistic Hand Gallery and Studio

The Artistic Hand Gallery and Studio represents one of the region’s most distinctive art venues. Offering a refreshing alternative to more traditional galleries in Orlando, it showcases the work of local artists with great charm.
Open Monday through Saturday, the gallery features an eclectic mix of pottery, paintings, jewelry, and various mixed-media creations that transcend conventional classifications.
Alongside its exhibitions, the gallery also provides a plethora of classes and workshops, covering various techniques from glass blowing to pottery throwing. This venue is an excellent place to acquire a one-of-a-kind memento while engaging with the amiable owner, Del.
9. Arcade Monsters Oviedo
Situated within the Alafaya Square shopping center, this retro arcade boasts an 80s sci-fi theme and belongs to a small chain based in Florida.
With over 150 games spread across seven rooms, it is fair to assert that Arcade Monsters caters to gamers of all preferences.
Guests will find a variety of modern fighting, shooting, and racing games coexisting harmoniously with classic arcade machines. In addition, the venue offers pinball machines, rhythm games, air hockey, experiential games, and numerous console options.
The arcade features a bar with an anime theme, offering craft beer and wine by the glass. Be sure to check the venue’s website for information about upcoming events, including the highly popular costume contest held during Halloween.
10. Oviedo Bowling Center
At the time of my visit, this local bowling facility had recently undergone renovations. The 24 lanes and interior decor appeared to be in excellent condition during my lightweight game session here a few months prior.
League play is available daily at the Oviedo Bowling Center; nonetheless, its layout also accommodates casual bowlers.
Special light shows are hosted on weekend evenings. The center promotes events like Friday Nite Live and All U Can Bowl on Saturday nights.
This facility also features a remarkable array of pinball machines in the Pinball Lounge, showcasing over 20 well-maintained machines, including nostalgic favorites like Evel Kneviel and Indiana Jones alongside contemporary releases.
11. The Coop Antiques
Whenever I explore a new city, I am inclined to visit the local antique center. In Oviedo, this destination is The Coop Antiques, a multi-dealer shop located at the Oviedo Shopping Center in downtown.
Spanning over 11,000 square feet, The Coop features over 60 dealer booths, ensuring a diverse range of merchandise.
The inventory encompasses an assortment of jewelry, mid-century furniture, model train sets, rare coins, vintage clothing, pocket watches, salvaged industrial pieces, and antique agricultural tools.
Unlike many antique markets, the pricing is considered reasonable. I discovered a charming hand-carved oar, which now decorates my wall.
12. District Eat and Play
Another establishment where adults can unwind in Oviedo is District Eat and Play located at the Mall. This venue operates similarly to Dave & Busters, combining a restaurant and bar with a variety of attractions.
Briefly summarizing the offerings, guests can enjoy boutique bowling, a 50-game arcade, axe throwing, GellyBall, and Pinball Alley featuring an impressive selection of machines.
Additionally, there is an Escape Room that features four distinct challenges at any given time. During my visit with friends, we participated in the Off the Radar challenge, which is set inside a disabled submarine, requiring us to resolve issues before the oxygen supply is exhausted.
13. Pappy’s Patch U-Pick Strawberries
With abundant sunshine, warm temperatures, and ample rainfall, Florida experiences a brief yet fruitful berry season.
Pappy’s Patch U-Pick Strawberries, located at 501 Florida Avenue, provides a delightful, hands-on family activity. Patrons can collect a shallow box and head into the fields to pick their own ripe strawberries.
I enjoyed a lovely experience harvesting in the fields and even purchased a bottle of local Happy Bee Honey from the stand.
The strawberry season typically spans from December to late March or April. The farm has inconsistent opening hours based on various factors, so it is advisable to check their Facebook page before visiting.
14. Twin Rivers Golf Club
Like many of the finest golf courses in Central Florida, a round at Twin Rivers Golf Club provides an opportunity to encounter wildlife. This includes alligators in nearly every water hazard and sandhill cranes that regularly disregard pace-of-play etiquette.
This semi-private championship course is open for public play, offering a layout that challenges players of all skill levels. Water hazards come into play on more than half the holes, and there are no less than 11 doglegs throughout.
The notable feature is the par-3 seventh hole, which boasts an island green. Golfers can utilize the practice facility that includes a driving range, putting green, and pitching area. The Grill Room serves as the perfect spot to reflect on the day’s round.
15. Oviedo Mall
Located just off State Road 417, Oviedo Mall offers a sizeable enclosed shopping facility with approximately 100 stores. Since its opening in 1998, the mall has housed a mix of national retail chains and local businesses.
Among the variety of stores, you will find B. Dalton, Dillards, Loft, GameStop, Claire’s, and Bath & Body Works.
In addition to District Eat and Play, the mall is home to Oviedo Brewing Co., featuring a selection of a dozen beer taps and delicious brick oven pizza on the menu.
Additionally, the mall includes Oviedo’s only movie theater, Regal Oviedo Mall, with 22 screens exhibiting a mix of mainstream and foreign films.
