As a resident of Alabama, I frequently visit Gulf Shores and find it to be the perfect destination for a beach getaway. Here is my curated list of the most engaging activities to experience in and around Gulf Shores, Alabama:
1. Gulf State Park
Gulf State Park features two miles of soft white sands and boasts the largest fishing pier on the Gulf of Mexico extending into its vibrant waters. You can enjoy sunbathing, swimming, or embarking on a dolphin-watching boat tour in this beautiful setting.
In addition to beach-related activities, the park offers great outdoor pursuits. Enjoy kayaking through serene backwaters, cycling through picturesque woodlands, or hiking through scenic trails.
If you wish to linger until sunset, the park provides numerous restaurants and bars with stunning ocean views, perfect for enjoying local seafood and a glass of wine under the night sky.
During my recent visit, I had an excellent evening at The Perch at Gulf State Park, where the food and cocktails were exceptional.
2. Orange Beach
Adjacent to the Alabama coastline near the Florida border, Orange Beach is celebrated for its stunning sandy shores, regarded as one of the finest beaches globally. This vibrant location draws visitors from across the region.
The beachfront is lined with hotel chains, waterfront dining options, and delightful music venues where you can enjoy cocktails while watching the sunset. Moreover, there are numerous activities available in the vicinity.
Whether you wish to explore the Gulf of Mexico and observe dolphins, engage in a round of golf, or simply recline on the soft sands soaking up the sun, Orange Beach offers all these experiences.
3. Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo
Located several blocks from the beach, the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is home to nearly 300 animals. Established in 1989 as a private initiative, the zoo houses a variety of exotic creatures including monkeys, lions, bears, and numerous bird species.
Following the experience of three significant hurricanes between 2004 and 2005, the zoo gained media attention, as it had to evacuate its animals.
The zoo subsequently participated in the Animal Planet series “The Little Zoo That Could” to raise awareness. Presently, it offers enhanced facilities and educational talks, alongside themed areas for visitors to enjoy.

5. Gulf Shores Kayaking
Personally, I find kayaking to be one of the most calming activities. Navigating through open waters allows for a profound connection with nature and wildlife. Whether your intention is to explore the ocean or venture into the backwaters near Gulf Shores, you will discover ample opportunities around.
You are welcome to bring a fishing rod to try your luck at catching fish, drift through areas shaded by Spanish Moss, or perhaps catch a glimpse of dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico.
6. The Park at OWA
The Park at OWA in Foley offers a delightful experience for the entire family. The name ‘OWA’ derives from a Muskogee word meaning ‘Big Water’, aptly reflecting the lakes and water features scattered throughout the park.
Downtown OWA mimics Alabama’s city streets and features charming vintage lights, decorative balconies, and numerous popular shops and restaurants, making it a great location to purchase unique gifts or enjoy a meal.
Additionally, if your visit includes children, the amusement area of the park is sure to impress. This section of the expansive 520-acre attraction features 21 thrilling rides and activities for a range of ages. Should you choose to remain after sundown, you’ll find live entertainment and enchanting fountain displays set to music.
7. Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail
This trail stretches over 15 miles, showcasing diverse ecosystems through which it passes. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail meanders through Gulf Shores, Gulf State Park, and Orange Beach and is named in honor of Hugh Branyon, an esteemed superintendent who managed Gulf State Park for nearly four decades.
The trail features a wealth of natural beauty, including coastal swamps and freshwater marshes that teem with wildlife. Visitors may be fortunate enough to spot alligators basking in sunlight or admire deer as they navigate through the landscape.

This is the tallest Ferris wheel on the Gulf Coast, providing breathtaking views of state parks, tranquil backwaters, and the expansive sea.

13. Fort Morgan
Fort Morgan, located on the Mobile Peninsula approximately 23 miles west of Gulf Shores, played a critical role in the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864, and it served during the Spanish-American War as well as both World Wars to safeguard American shores.
This historical site, constructed in a strategic pentagonal design, illustrates the evolution of coastal fortifications in the 1800s. Guests can enjoy a guided walking tour with audio commentary, as well as view various exhibits and artifacts from the fort’s operational period.
