Tavares, the seat of Lake County, is a charming waterfront city situated amongst the Harris Chain of Lakes. Given its rich water landscape, an alternative method of long-distance travel became essential.
This is exemplified by the seaplane, and Tavares has earned the distinction of being America’s Seaplane City, boasting a seaplane base along Lake Dora near the downtown area.
Consequently, one recommended activity for visitors to Tavares is to experience a flight. Options include a brief aerial tour of the city or embarking on an adventure to observe alligators or to gain a unique view of Walt Disney World Resort from above.
Additionally, Tavares features a vibrant and recently renovated downtown area, numerous engaging events, and an exceptional paddling trail along the Dora Canal, which meanders through the city.
1. Wooton Park
During my visit to Tavares, I was particularly attracted to this lakeside park, located just across the tracks from the downtown district. By any standard, Wooton Park is stunning, characterized by its ancient moss-covered live oaks and breathtaking views of Lake Dora.
The Tavares Seaplane Base adds an element of excitement, with seaplanes taking off every few minutes during my visit.
You may also launch a canoe from Wooton Park, which features a new playground, an impressive splash park (details to follow), and numerous picnic spots where you can take a break and enjoy a meal.
Not surprisingly, Wooton Park is a favored location for outdoor events, such as the Sunnyland Antique Boat Festival held in March.
2. Jones Brothers Air & Seaplane Adventures
Aviation enthusiasts will find it difficult to visit America’s Seaplane City without partaking in at least one flight. Operating out of Tavares Seaplane Base, Jones Brothers Air & Seaplane Adventures offers a rare chance to take off and land on water.
Guests can select from a variety of flight options. For those short on time, the Lake Dora Splash & Dash allows you to experience the plane’s unique landing and takeoff maneuver.
Other excursions encompass vibrant Lake Apopka and the renowned amusement parks of Orlando, or you can explore the impressive natural landscapes of the Harris Chain of Lakes or the St. Johns River.
3. Lake Apopka
Located just a few minutes south of Tavares, Lake Apopka is the fourth-largest lake in Florida. For much of the 20th century, the lake was often avoided due to ecological issues.
Years of agricultural runoff and chemical pollution had rendered the lake an ecological wasteland. Fortunately, changes began in the 1990s when the northern shoreline was converted back into marshlands.
Nature has since reclaimed Lake Apopka. Over 360 bird species have been documented in the area, making it one of the most biodiverse locations in Florida.
Visitors can traverse the lakeshore via the 18-mile Lake Apopka Loop Trail. For a more relaxed experience, the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive is recommended, a two-hour journey featuring narrated stops along the way.
4. Downtown Tavares
Those who have not visited Tavares in recent years may be surprised by the dramatic transformation downtown.
In the late 2010s, a complete streetscape renovation was undertaken, incorporating brick-paved streets, palm trees, benches, and other appealing enhancements.
Behind Wooton Park, you will find a small but expanding collection of shops and dining establishments. On my visit, dining choices included pub food, tacos, burgers, New American cuisine, Cuban dishes, steaks, hot dogs, and classic diner fare.
Given that Wooton Park serves as an event space, there is frequently a gathering occurring. My visit coincided with Rocktoberfest, which featured live music, food trucks, and seaplane competitions during October.
5. Adventure Outdoor Paddle
As Florida’s largest chain of lakes, Tavares is an exceptional location for paddling. Notably, the Dora Canal, which flows just west of downtown, enhances this experience.
Adorned with stunning bald cypress trees draped in Spanish moss, this canal has been described as the “most beautiful mile of waterway in the world.” An abundance of avian life can be observed along its banks, including herons, anhingas, cormorants, and egrets.
The principal tour operator in Tavares is Adventure Outdoor Paddle, located on the Lake Dora waterfront. Their most sought-after offering is the Dora Canal Tour, which lasts between 2 to 2.5 hours.
For those preferring independence, kayaks can be rented for a suggested three-mile round-trip journey along the canal, returning to the Lake Dora waterfront.
6. Lake County Historical Society
One of the most striking structures in downtown Tavares is the Old Lake County Courthouse, dating back to 1922 and designed in a Classical Revival style.
This building was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and is distinguished by the impressive eight Ionic columns that dominate its façade.
Inside, you will find the Lake County Historical Society Museum, located on the first floor. During my visit, exhibits showcased citrus cultivation, Seminole Native American culture, military history, domestic life from the 19th century, and fossils discovered throughout the county.
7. Summerall Park
This charming little park, nestled within a dense grove along the Dora Canal, is adorned with luxurious Spanish moss cascading from the branches.
Visitors are welcome to bring lunch and enjoy the scenery as boats glide by. The park offers picnic tables shaded beneath the canopy of trees or within small pavilions.
With rich vegetation and abundant wildlife along the banks, the Summerall Canal is an excellent waterway for paddling, allowing for canoe or kayak launch from this location.
8. Lake Idamere Park
Adjacent to one of the smaller lakes in Tavares, the scenic Lake Idamere Park is overseen by Lake County.
Spanning over 40 acres, the park features a lovely fishing pier and observation deck, perfect for relaxation while taking in the water views. Visitors can also find a remarkable collection of bald cypress trees, as well as a playground and picnic facilities.
Another noteworthy aspect is the first Miracle Field in Lake County, a sports facility designed with a specialized surface to enable individuals of all abilities to participate in various sports.
Lake Idamere Park also serves as the venue for the annual Lady of the Lakes Renaissance Faire, described later in this article.
9. Sunnyland Antique Boat Festival
The largest antique and classic boating festival on the East Coast occurs on the Lake Dora waterfront each March.
This three-day event, known as the Sunnyland Antique Boat Festival, has been celebrated for over 40 years and features numerous attractions.
During my visit, I observed stunning classic vessels displayed along Tavares’s new docks, all competing for various awards.
Additionally, the festival includes antique boats for sale, a nautical flea market, a classic car show, a food court, a beer garden, live music, and seaplane rides.
Individuals travel from over 26 states to attend this remarkable event. Pets on leashes are welcome, and there are numerous activities available for children.
10. Discovery Gardens
The University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences oversees these demonstration gardens in Tavares, designed for hands-on education.
The gardens feature over 20 themed sections, showcasing more than 700 different plants across nearly seven acres. There is typically a variety of blooms present during the spring and early summer months.
With informative brochures and adequate labeling, you don’t need to be a horticultural expert to appreciate this space. Personally, I was captivated by the orchid house and the aromatic rose garden.
The staff also organizes various classes and events throughout the year, so checking the UF website for updates is advisable.
11. Children’s Splash Park
Located within Wooton Park, the Children’s Splash Park provides a refreshing retreat for children during the hot summer months. It operates from mid-May through the end of August, with admission priced at just $2.
The splash park is equipped with a variety of enjoyable features and incorporates design elements that reflect the city’s heritage. An accurate model of a seaplane is also featured, complete with jets of water emerging from its pontoons.
Please note that swim diapers are mandatory for children under four years old, and during peak periods, the park often reaches its capacity (59), so planning ahead is advisable.
12. Tavares Community Theater Company
Established in 2014, this local community theater company has quickly become a cultural cornerstone for Tavares.
Upon its inception, the Tavares Community Theater Company acquired a building located west of downtown at 904 W Main St.
Currently, this building is gradually being remodeled to serve as a venue accommodating up to 150 attendees.
As of the time of this writing, performances are taking place at the Graceway Church in nearby Leesburg, featuring selections such as Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite and John Cariani’s Almost Maine.
13. Trout Lake Nature Center
Spanning over 200 acres, the Trout Lake Nature Center in Eustis serves as both an educational and natural attraction in the vicinity.
The lake is the focal point of the park, and its expansive grounds are best explored using the clearly marked boardwalk and trail network.
Along the path, visitors will encounter picnic areas, educational displays, bridges, and docks extending into the water. A not-to-be-missed sight is the Grandfather Oak tree, which is truly awe-inspiring.
Wildlife is commonly observed here, and the center’s staff provide demonstrations, classes, lectures, and various other educational and recreational activities.
14. Lady of the Lakes Renaissance Faire
For two consecutive weekends in November, an extensive renaissance fair is hosted in Tavares. Located in the wooded area in the southern part of the city, the Lady of the Lakes Renaissance Faire encompasses a wide array of activities.
Live entertainment includes fire-eating, storytelling, Medieval music, sea shanties, magic performances, and theatrical productions. Moreover, thrilling combat displays featuring jousting, Viking raids, equestrian feats, and more can also be enjoyed.
Additionally, numerous vendors set up shop at the fair, offering handcrafted items such as jewelry, blown glass, clothing, bags, replica weapons, and hats.
Food vendors contribute to the event’s charm with traditional fair delicacies like turkey legs and Scotch eggs.
15. Hurricane Dockside Grill
Set against a backdrop of oak hammocks along the Dead River Canal, Hurricane Dockside Grill offers a relaxed dining experience characterized by stunning views and a casual atmosphere.
The restaurant is particularly celebrated for its burgers, tacos, and sandwiches (the Mahi Mahi is particularly popular), best enjoyed with a refreshing beer.
Live music frequently fills the venue during the afternoons and evenings, and the dockside setting also permits access by boat.
One highlight of this establishment is the outdoor tiki bar, where it is possible to view alligators from a safe distance.
