At the southern terminus of Amtrak’s 855-mile Auto Train, Sanford represents one of the oldest incorporated cities in Florida, situated beautifully along the south shore of Lake Monroe.

This extensive body of water serves as the head of navigation on the scenic St. John’s River, and Sanford’s waterfront seamlessly integrates with the lake.

Throughout my visit to the city, I found myself in close proximity to the lake, leisurely strolling along the RiverWalk or embarking on cruises and sailing adventures.

Downtown Sanford is exceptionally attractive, embellished with towering oaks and brick-paved streets, complemented by a plethora of dining selections and vibrant entertainment and nightlife.

Presented below are my 15 recommended activities in and around Sanford, Florida.

1. Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens

The Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a prominent destination for those keen on experiencing the natural environment in its full glory.

Conveniently situated just off Interstate 4 near Orlando, the zoo and botanical gardens have a storied history that dates back to the early 1920s and have been at their current sites since the mid-1970s.

With nearly 400 animal species and a succession of cultivated gardens, this venue occupied my family and me for much of the day.

Parking is included in the admission fee, and same-day reentry is permitted with proof of ticket purchase.

2. St. Johns Rivership Company

Measuring over 100 feet and propelled by reliable and efficient diesel engines rather than steam, the St. Johns River Company’s flagship, Barbara-Lee, holds the distinction of being the only vessel of its kind on the St. Johns River.

Originally constructed in the 1980s, the boat has undergone significant renovations in the past decade. Boarding the vessel feels akin to stepping back in time.

With its classic decor, impressive paddlewheel, and five decks, the ship accommodates nearly 200 guests at once. For an extraordinary experience, a rivership tour offers stunning views alongside captivating local history.

The live entertainment is unexpectedly delightful as well.

3. Buster’s Bistro

Belgium may not be the first country associated with Sanford, yet Buster’s Bistro has distinguished itself as a local establishment worthy of recognition.

The restaurant offers a menu that beautifully balances heartiness and elegance, epitomizing Belgian culinary tradition. Consider dishes like fish and chips featuring Stella Artois-battered cod or a Belgian-style meatloaf topped with a Bordeaux and cherry reduction.

Beer plays a significant role in any Belgian dining experience, and patrons can choose from an extensive selection of Dubbels, Tripels, Lambics, and more.

The atmosphere at Buster’s is lively every night, complemented by international sports broadcasts on large-screen TVs, live music on Fridays, DJ sets on Saturdays, trivia events on Tuesdays, and various community gatherings.

4. Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center

Conveniently located on South Magnolia Avenue in Sanford, the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center presents an array of performing arts offerings, including theatrical performances, musicals, films, and concerts.

The historic venue, constructed in 1923, boasts modern lighting and sound systems while providing an intimate experience characteristic of smaller theaters compared to larger urban venues.

As an admirer of classic films and B movies, I frequently visit this theater. I recently participated in a sing-along event featuring “The Sound of Music.”

To stay informed about their performances and event calendar, checking their Facebook page regularly is recommended; alternatively, contacting them via phone is an option for those who prefer.

5. U-SAIL of Central Florida

Lake Monroe, with its picturesque waters, serves as a significant resource for Sanford.

Diverse touring options are available to explore both the lake and the St. John’s River. However, if you have always been keen to learn sailing, U-SAIL of Central Florida offers an excellent opportunity.

Staffed by qualified captains and instructors with decades of experience, along with a varied fleet of vessels, U-SAIL is consistently recognized among the best sailing schools in the nation.

Visit them at 531 North Palmetto Avenue in Sanford.

6. Sanford Museum

Discovering a complimentary attraction, particularly one with educational value, is always a pleasant surprise.

Since its inception in 1957, the Sanford Museum has served as the city’s principal archive for local history, culture, and economics. It is open every day except Sundays and Mondays.

Exhibits include historic photographs, documents, and personal narratives reflecting life in earlier times, in addition to various artifacts related to the nearby Naval Air Station.

7. Limo Cycle Tours

For enjoyable, active, and adventurous groups of up to 15 individuals, there is no better way to explore historic Sanford than on a guided bicycle tour.

This unique experience features multi-seated bicycles, creating a fun, collaborative atmosphere as you tour the town and Lake Monroe at sunset.

All packages come inclusive of a guide, with options for pub tours, bachelor and bachelorette celebrations, birthday parties, and even engaging scavenger hunts. I participated in a group tour with ten others, and made new acquaintances during a two-hour excursion, stopping at a few pubs along the way.

Situated on East 1st Street in Sanford, Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Cafe has established itself as a cherished destination for over a decade, specializing in authentic German fare.

In addition to a range of non-German cuisine, the standout offerings include sausages, deli meats, schnitzels, and decadent desserts that keep patrons returning.

This family-owned establishment takes pride in its welcoming staff, high-quality cuisine, reasonable pricing, and comfortable, family-centered ambiance.

Conveniently located in town, it serves as an ideal venue to unwind after an active day of exploration.

9. Palate Coffee Brewery

In Sanford, coffee transcends being merely a delightful morning beverage; it also serves a purpose for social change.

Located on West 2nd Street, Palate Coffee Brewery is a distinctive local establishment that operates with volunteers. The profits generated contribute to combating the global human trafficking crisis.

Beyond their dedication to this noble cause, the brewery is renowned for its freshly sourced beans and skilled baristas. Personally, this experience has transformed my perception of coffee.

While it may not be the most economical cup of coffee you will encounter, those additional cents may very well contribute to changing lives.

10. Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park

Encompassing sections of Lake and Seminole Counties, Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park features segments along the St. Johns and Wekiva Rivers and serves as a vital wildlife haven while presenting various recreation opportunities.

Spanning almost 20,000 acres, the park’s most sought-after activities include horseback riding, fishing, hiking, and wildlife observation. Several camping spots are available, most of which are relatively private and basic.

Access to the park is conveniently located just off State Route 44. For genuine outdoor enthusiasts and nature admirers, it offers an idyllic setting to explore for several days.

11. Mayfair Country Club

With an extensive selection of over 1,000 golf courses, Florida attracts golfers nationwide, particularly during winter months when northern states endure harsh weather.

Established in 1922, Mayfair Country Club is recognized as one of the earliest clubs in the state and has hosted several golfing legends, including Ben Hogan and Arnold Palmer.

Conveniently located near Interstate 4 in historic Sanford, the club features amenities such as a driving range, practice areas for chipping and putting, as well as shower facilities. My memorable experience here included a round of golf shared with a family of sandhill cranes on the green.

12. Hontoon Island State Park

Hontoon Island State Park, located on the St. Johns River in Volusia County, Florida, represents an ideal getaway for travelers seeking serenity beyond the busy tourist attractions.

This island can only be accessed by private boat or via the park’s ferry service, making it a tranquil escape. First-time visitors should consider stopping by the park’s museum and visitor center prior to exploring independently.

At the visitor center, one can gain insights into the island’s Native American inhabitants over millennia, including evidence observable on walking trails featuring a shell midden.

The park is open daily and can be visited free of charge; however, a nominal fee applies if you wish to camp overnight.

13. Walt Disney World

Arguably the most famous resort in the Sunshine State, Walt Disney World requires no formal introduction; it stands as an essential destination for those traveling in central Florida with children.

Featuring the Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot, and Animal Kingdom Theme Park, visitors can engage in a multitude of activities across several days. Alongside family-friendly attractions, the resort also hosts various food, wine, arts, and crafts festivals that appeal to adults.

It is often possible to discover promotions and special offers online, in travel magazines, or brochures, so I recommend spending some time seeking out opportunities to save money.

14. LEGOLAND Florida Resort

For many generations, LEGOs have served as toys that inspire creativity and imagination. Central Florida is home to a unique attraction dedicated to this iconic brand in all its forms.

In addition to creativity-inducing activities, the resort’s exhibitions address natural phenomena, history, culture, and art—encouraging visitors to remain active.

The resort offers a variety of engaging options, not all of which are included with standard admission; to utilize the water park or attend live shows, additional fees are applicable.

15. Lakeridge Winery and Vineyards

Situated in Clermont, Florida, approximately half an hour from Orlando, Lakeridge Winery and Vineyards has been operational since 1989. It has developed a reputation for exquisite wines and picturesque settings.

Attracting over 100,000 visitors annually, it stands as Florida’s premier vineyard and winery, offering various festivals, tastings, and tour opportunities.

Complimentary tours and tastings are routinely presented at their extensive countryside estate, which encompasses over 120 acres. Visitors can sample award-winning wines and have the opportunity to purchase bottles to take home from the on-site shop.

For an authentic Floridian wine experience, I recommend sampling the Southern White or the Chablis, both crafted from local Muscadine grapes, which thrive in Florida’s soil and climate.
