Germany is a country where visiting different regions provides distinctly varied experiences, thanks to its considerable size and remarkable diversity. With nearly 80 cities across the nation, it is likely that a few will captivate your interest.
1.) Schwerin
Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is located in the northeast of Germany. Often overshadowed by larger cities such as Berlin and Hamburg, Schwerin is worth your attention. Its crowning jewel is the Schwerin Palace, a breathtaking building that has stood for over a millennium, serving as the seat of the state parliament. While there, indulge in fresh seafood at Restaurant LUKAS. For accommodations, consider the Hotel Speicher am Ziegelsee, which enjoys a prime waterfront location.
2.) Hamburg
Hamburg, located on the Jutland Peninsula in northern Germany, consistently ranks as one of my favorite cities in the country. Known for its myriad attractions, it presents a vibrant cultural landscape. Don’t miss out on the city’s exceptional coffee scene, featuring hotspots like Zuckermonarchie, Less Political, and my personal favorite, Public Coffee Roasters. Additionally, explore the city’s lively street festivals, particularly Hafengeburtstag, celebrating the historic port, as well as the festive charm of Hamburg’s Christmas markets.
3.) Berlin
Berlin represents a constantly evolving city that offers a plethora of exciting experiences with each visit. The city is rich in diversity, as evidenced by its array of attractions. Key sites include the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Cathedral, and the East Side Gallery, which exemplify the essence of Berlin’s rich history and vibrant culture.
4.) Cologne
Cologne, known historically as a Roman outpost from the first century AD, remains vibrant and architecturally significant. Visitors should experience the Cologne Cathedral and its substantial steps – a challenge best approached on an empty stomach.
5.) Leipzig
Leipzig was an unexpected delight during my travels. I had few expectations before my visit, but I thoroughly enjoyed my experience there. With its unpretentious artistic atmosphere, Leipzig also offers significant historical exploration. Don’t miss the impressive Volkerschlachtdenkmal and the captivating Old City Hall and Market Square, along with the breathtaking views from the Panorama Tower.
6.) Dusseldorf
Dusseldorf presents itself as a dynamic capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, often mistakenly viewed solely as a business destination. However, once you delve deeper, you’ll discover a charming and vibrant city ripe for exploration. Activities include exploring the Rheinufer area, visiting Schloss Benrath, and strolling through Carlsplatz Markt on a sunny day. Afterwards, indulge in sushi at Nagaya.
7.) Frankfurt
Frankfurt is renowned for being one of the most international cities in Germany, serving as a significant financial hub in mainland Europe. Historically, it has played a vital role as the election site for German kings and queens. Book lovers should not miss the opportunity to attend the prestigious Book Fair held annually. Key attractions include St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, the Staedel Museum, and a visit to the vibrant Kleinmarkthalle market.
8.) Nuremberg
Nuremberg is easily one of Germany’s more recognized cities, boasting numerous attractions. Key highlights include exploring the Altstadt, visiting St. Lorenz Church, wandering through the picturesque Weissgerbergasse streets, enjoying the famous gingerbread, and reflecting upon history at the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rally Grounds.
Don’t overlook the Neues Museum Nürnberg, as its art exhibitions are truly remarkable!
9.) Heidelberg
Heidelberg is often regarded as a smaller city in Germany but offers an abundance of experiences. Notable sites include the iconic Heidelberg Castle and a stroll along Philosophers Walk, which showcases striking vistas over the Neckar River. For dining, visit Schnitzelbank, known for its exceptional schnitzel.
10.) Freiburg
Freiburg, situated near both Switzerland and France on the outskirts of the Black Forest, is among the lively cities in Germany. With its blend of historical significance and laid-back university vibe, Freiburg is one of the sunniest destinations in the country. Must-see sites include the beautiful Augustinermuseum, the recreation area of Seepark, and the historic Schwabentor.
11.) Würzburg
Würzburg, located in Bavaria, is among the southern cities worth exploring, rich in history and architecture. Visitors should savor the beauty of the Würzburg Residence, known as one of Europe’s finest palaces. Additionally, the 8th-century shrine amidst Festung Marienberg offers unique historical insights.
12.) Munich
Munich serves as the pulsating heart and capital of Bavaria, founded by Benedictine monks, a theme reflected in its city symbol. A wealth of museums awaits visitors, including the impressive BMW Museum. Visitors should also check out Asam’s Church, an 18th-century architectural marvel. If you’re fortunate enough to visit during Oktoberfest, enjoy the festive atmosphere filled with fine German beer.
13.) Regensburg
Regensburg, with its rich history, was originally established as a Roman settlement and served as the early capital of Bavaria. Key attractions include St. Emmeram’s Basilica, the iconic Stone Bridge, and the Old City Hall, all dating back to the Middle Ages. For an authentic dining experience, Storstad offers exceptional cuisine in a vibrant atmosphere.
