Top 12 Must-Do Activities in Hangzhou, China

Surprisingly, Hangzhou was not among the top destinations on my list when considering cities to visit in China. Nevertheless, the city boasts an array of engaging activities that merit a visit!

With the vibrant nightlife of Shanghai, the dynamic atmosphere of the capital Beijing, and the allure of the Great Wall, my attention was diverted to other areas of the nation.

However, Hangzhou stands as a remarkable and historically significant city.

1.) Sail across the West Lake

The West Lake is arguably the most iconic landmark in Hangzhou, and its beauty is undeniable. In fact, West Lake is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The most enjoyable way to explore it is certainly via one of the hand-paddled boats! Engaging in this activity ranks as one of the most relaxing experiences in Hangzhou.

2.) Visit Hu Xueyan’s former home

A visit to this historically significant residence feels like a journey back in time, complete with breathtaking gardens.

3.) See the 8 Diagram Field

The 8 Diagram Field, historically the site of the emperor’s former palaces during the Southern Song Dynasty when Hangzhou served as the capital of China, reflects the grandiosity of the period.

4.) Explore Lingyin Temple

This Buddhist temple ranks among the largest and most notable I have encountered in my travels.

5.) Take a step back in time on Hefang Street

Hefang Street is the perfect locale for souvenir shopping and for enjoying a pleasant afternoon! This bustling street features historical buildings that give an impression of stepping back into old China.

6.) Marvel at the Enduring Memories Of Hangzhou show

This captivating performance, directed by the individual who orchestrated the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony, left me thoroughly impressed. The show features outstanding lighting, compelling musical elements, and skilled dancers, all contributing to an exhilarating experience.

7.) Sail through the Xixi Wetlands

Exploring the wetlands presents another excellent opportunity to gain insight into Chinese history. For us, this experience felt distinctively removed from the urban environment.

8.) Check out the view from (and of) Chenghuang Pavilion

This architectural marvel offers stunning views of both the city and West Lake!

This Business District might not seem like an exciting destination, yet it presents a captivating architectural landscape unlike any other. It features some impressively tall buildings, with the Golden Sun building standing out as a notable attraction.

10.) Walk across Gongchen Qiao Bridge

The picturesque rivers running through Hangzhou make its old bridges quite sought after; however, Gongchen Qiao Bridge stands out as the tallest pedestrian bridge in the area.

11.) Visit Straight Street

Straight Street, adjacent to Gongchen Qiao Bridge, is one of the most traditionally appealing areas in the city. For those keen to experience authentic Chinese culture, this is an ideal destination.

12.) Explore a Tea Plantation

Tea holds significant cultural importance in China, particularly in Hangzhou. As one would visit vineyards in Bordeaux, a trip to a tea plantation in Hangzhou is essential for savoring quality tea directly from the source.
