A visit to San Antonio would be incomplete without experiencing the Alamo. This iconic landmark is one of the most significant historical sites in the United States, recognized for its pivotal role in American history.
Dating back to 1836, the site was the location of the famous Battle of the Alamo. Today, guests can explore the museum and library, delving into the profound history of Texas. Although the area might feel compact, it is rich in historical significance.
We found it particularly rewarding to wander around the Alamo at our leisure; however, for those wishing to deepen their historical knowledge, joining a guided tour can offer valuable insights.
It is worth noting that the site experiences increased foot traffic during weekends and holidays. To enhance your experience, consider visiting on a weekday, preferably in the morning, for a quieter atmosphere.
2.) Natural Bridge Caverns
Located approximately 30 minutes from the Alamo, the Natural Bridge Caverns make for an excellent half-day excursion from Downtown San Antonio.
While numerous caves dot Texas, the Natural Bridge Caverns are among the largest accessible caves in the state. We thoroughly enjoyed our underground exploration, dedicating a few hours to marvel at the impressive formations during the Discovery Walking Tour. While generally accessible, some inclines may be encountered once inside the caverns.
In addition to the cave experience, visitors can also partake in above-ground activities, such as zip-lining and navigating a rope course, making it an ideal spot for those seeking adventure.
3.) San Fernando Cathedral
Established in 1873, San Fernando Cathedral ranks among the oldest churches in the U.S. Its architectural beauty is complemented by the presence of the remains of several defenders of the Alamo, enveloped in a rich historical context.
In addition to its stunning interior, a captivating light show occurs on most evenings, offering an extraordinary visual experience. This free light show takes place at 9 pm, 9:30 pm, and 10 pm on days other than Monday.
4.) San Antonio River Walk
One of our most cherished locations to wander, particularly in the late afternoon, is the River Walk, a must-see in San Antonio.
Meandering along the river, the River Walk is delightful to explore on foot, providing the opportunity to traverse various parts of Downtown San Antonio while stopping at numerous cafes and bars along the route.
5.) Market Square (El Mercado)
If you’re seeking a shopping experience, Market Square is undoubtedly one of the top places to visit in San Antonio.
You can find an array of unique items ranging from local pottery to bespoke jewelry and artwork by local artisans—there’s something for every visitor.
Rest assured, you will likely find at least one memento to take home!
6.) Tower of the Americas
For spectacular views of San Antonio, make sure to visit the Tower of the Americas. It is an exceptional spot, particularly for foresight of a breathtaking sunset.
7.) La Villita Historic Arts Village
Recognized as part of the National Registry of Historic Districts, La Villita Historic Arts Village provides a unique experience in San Antonio.
We were enamored with the charming art galleries and quaint vintage shops throughout the area.
This location is conveniently positioned right next to the River Walk, making it a perfect stop after a leisurely stroll.
8.) San Antonio Missions National Historical Park
Diving into the rich history, visitors should not miss the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, which includes five distinct missions–a UNESCO World Heritage site.
During your visit, ensure to explore Mission San Jose, Mission Concepción, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada, each offering a unique historical narrative.
9.) Witte Museum
The Witte Museum is a must-visit for those who appreciate historical exhibitions.
This museum showcases incredible galleries dedicated to Nature, Science, and Culture, making it a fantastic destination for museum enthusiasts.

This location is particularly enjoyable if you are already exploring the nearby DoSeum Museum, which is ideal for families. The garden features koi ponds, a large waterfall, and beautifully maintained gardens, all of which exude tranquility.
