Puglia stands out as one of Italy’s premier vacation destinations. This region not only features some of the most picturesque cities but also boasts an array of iconic sites in Southern Italy that are too stunning to overlook.
With its famous trulli houses located around Alberobello, along with coastal towns like Monopoli and the historical city of Bari, Puglia is undeniably one of Italy’s must-visit regions, further enhanced by its renowned regional cuisine.
For optimal exploration of Puglia, renting a vehicle is advisable. This approach facilitates access to more secluded locales. Nevertheless, for those not inclined to drive, public transportation options such as trains and buses are also available.
In this article, we will highlight the finest activities and sites in Puglia that are sure to enrich your travel experience.
1.) Alberobello
Arguably one of Puglia’s most celebrated towns, Alberobello is known for its distinctive trulli houses, which are delightful to behold. Historical accounts suggest that these structures were initially constructed by farmers who would dismantle them quickly to evade taxation by local authorities.
A piece of advice that would have been beneficial prior to our visit: while the trulli houses are indeed stunning, we found that 3-4 hours in Alberobello was sufficient. Although it is worth a visit, an extended stay of 2-3 days is not necessary.
Upon arrival, be sure to park in designated car parks (for example, we parked here). Should parking be full, additional options are available along the same route, each typically with a nominal fee.
After parking, take a leisurely stroll through the trulli houses and browse the charming pottery shops. If you’re feeling hungry, consider dining at Ristorante Il Pinnacolo, situated in the trulli area of Alberobello.
Also, don’t forget that numerous trulli houses are scattered throughout the Itria Valley in Puglia, though not usually clustered together in such large numbers as seen in Alberobello.
For a unique experience, there’s an exquisite hotel located about 25 minutes from the heart of Alberobello, nestled within the picturesque olive groves of Puglia.
Known as Borgo Canonica, this hotel offers accommodation in a trullo, providing an authentic Puglian experience.
2.) Matera
Matera, while technically located just outside of Puglia, is situated near the regional border with Basilicata and is an essential visit. Approximately an hour’s drive from Alberobello, Matera is a city steeped in rich history that dates back thousands of years, regarded as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities globally.
The city consists of both ‘old’ and ‘new’ sections, although it is advisable to concentrate your visit within the historical part of Matera. This area is notable for its unique cave hotels which guests often cherish. The winding streets of the old town, largely restrict car access, making it an accessible and captivating area to explore on foot.
We had the pleasure of staying at Aquatio Cave Hotel & Spa, featuring an intriguing cave room and a pool located within a cave.
During your visit, do not miss the beautiful Saint Agostino Church, Santa Lucia alle Malve Church, and Duomo Matera, each representing the architectural beauty and historical significance of the area.
3.) Polignano a Mare
Perched along the beautiful coastline of Puglia, Polignano a Mare offers visitors a charming seaside town experience, complete with a stunning beach that can get crowded during peak seasons.
This locale is often lauded for accommodating one of the most renowned beaches throughout Puglia. Located approximately 30 minutes from the city of Bari, Polignano a Mare features a delightful mix of seafood restaurants, quaint streets, and breathtaking coastal views. It’s an ideal setting for a leisurely extended visit, although a day trip can suffice if time is limited.
We opted for a stay at San Michelle Suites, where we reserved a suite featuring picturesque views of the cove at Lama Monachile. The rooftop views are particularly stunning, especially for an evening aperitif during sunset.
4.) Monopoli
Contrary to what the name might suggest, Monopoli is not a board game but a breathtaking town worthy of at least a day trip, if not more.
As you explore Monopoli, make sure to wander along the serendipitous little streets, particularly around Palazzo Palmieri. This charming town allows for spontaneous exploration without a rigid itinerary, ensuring that every turn leads to unique discoveries. Further, it is vital to take a scenic coastal walk around the harbor and Cala Porta Vecchia.
For dining, consider visiting Pinsotti for an excellent pizza or visiting Osteria Perricci for a memorable seafood lunch.
5.) Bari
Bari serves as the primary gateway to the Puglian region for many international travelers, featuring the largest airport that offers direct connections from major cities like London.
However, don’t limit your view of Bari to merely an entry and exit point. This city boasts rich culture and history that enhance its appeal among visitors. Our stays in Bari allowed us to appreciate the picturesque old town along the seafront, known as Bari Vecchia.
This area features charming cobblestoned streets, quaint restaurants, and intriguing museums waiting to be explored. Notably, be sure to admire the intricate details of San Sabino Cathedral, Castello Svevo, and the Bari Museum.
6.) Ostuni
Located near Brindisi, Ostuni is a superb stop for anyone traveling in Eastern Puglia. Known for its striking whitewashed architecture and lovely cafes, this town is perfect for leisurely strolls.
Ensure to visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the historic area surrounding Arco Scoppa, as well as the impressive Colonna di Sant’Oronzo, which has stood in the town since the 1700s.
If you desire a structured visit, consider enrolling in a guided walking tour that will help you navigate through the charming alleys. Following your exploration, it is advisable to indulge in delicious pasta at Osteria Del Tempo Perso—their octopus is highly regarded.
7.) Lecce
Lecce is renowned for its spectacular Baroque architecture and sculptures, making it a must-visit for those who appreciate beautiful sites and historical significance.
Begin your visit by venturing into the magnificent Basilica di Santa Croce and observing the remnants of the Roman Amphitheatre. To gain deeper insights into the city’s history, a guided walking tour can reveal hidden wonders and provide context about the sites visited.
8.) Gargano National Park
If you seek outdoor activities, Gargano National Park should be on your itinerary. This destination offers stunning sandy beaches like Baia di Campi and breathtaking coastal scenery, perfect for exploration.
Consider renting a boat to fully appreciate the coastline, particularly the rugged beauty of Grotta Sfondata.
9.) Grotta della Poesia
The Grotta della Poesia, also situated in the Salento region, is a beautiful seaside cave and swimming hole, making it an ideal stop for relaxation and enjoyment of the coastal landscape. Be sure especially to visit Grotta della Poesia for stunning views and clear waters, along with the nearby Nfucaciucci Bay.
From here, continue your journey by stopping at Gallipoli, another picturesque town perfect for exploration.
10.) Vieste
Vieste is a gem on the northern coast of Puglia, nestled within Gargano National Park. As you explore Vieste, ensure to check out the Church of Saint Francis and enjoy the coastal paths nearby.
For a culinary experience, consider dining at Vecchia Vieste, where you can indulge in delightful seafood while enjoying gorgeous views.
11.) Trani
Located between Bari and Barletta, Trani features an impressive harbor and is an excellent place to sample local cuisine at the waterfront restaurants.
For recommended dining, we particularly enjoyed Ristorante Pescandalo, renowned for serving the freshest catch from the harbor. While Trani is utterly charming, it is better suited as a brief stop during a road trip rather than an extended stay.
12.) Otranto
Otranto, a magnificent coastal town in Salento, invites visitors to discover its charming Cathedral and the Castillo Aragonese. Do not miss the chance to enjoy sunset drinks at Maestrale.
For lunch, consider a casual meal at SoFish, a street food-style eatery that specializes in delicious local seafood. One cannot visit Otranto without relishing its maritime delights.
